FIRST WEATHER-WX WALL

HOT AND HUMID WITH AFTERNOON STORMS

We will find ourselves in a rather typical summertime pattern for the upcoming work week. Temperatures will be hot, yet seasonal for early July. Highs rather consistently are expected between 92 and 93 degrees.

With sea breeze interactions today, and for the next several days, you can expect scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Coverage from day to day will vary, yet the usual late afternoon and early evening time frame will be the most likely for that development. Today much of the activity will be from 3pm on through the evening and mainly aimed toward the inland areas.

TROPICAL UPDATE

Weather conditions look generally quiet regarding tropical cyclones across the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. No cyclones are active, and development of any storms is not anticipated in the next three to five days. Return to index of stories...

NEW TONIGHT --

NEARLY SIXTY THREE WOMAN AND YOUND GIRLS WHO WERE KIDNAPPED IN NIGERIA LAST MONTH.

HAVE ESCAPED AND RETURNED BACK TO THEIR NOW BURNED OUT VILLAGES.

THOSE WOMAN WERE SEIZED FROM THEIR VILLAGES IN THE NORTHERN PARTS OF BORNO BACK ON JUNE 18TH.

THIER KIDNAPPERS KILLED 30-MEN AND SET FIRES TO THE VILLAGES.

A LOCAL VILIGRANT FIGHTNING THOSE MEN SAID THE WOMAN FLED AFTER THIER CAPTORS LEFT TO LAUNCH AN ATTACK.

THAT GROUP IS STILL BELIEVED TO HAVE NEARLY 200-ADDITIONAL GIRLS.

Kano, Nigeria -- Sixty-three women and girls kidnapped by Boko Haram last month in Nigeria escaped from their captors and have returned to their burnt village, a security source and a local vigilante fighting the militant group said.

The hostages were seized from the Kummabza village in northern Borno state on June 18 after a four-day invasion of the village by Boko Haram insurgents. The militants killed 30 men and burned the entire village.

The group is still believed to be holding over 200 schoolgirls abducted April 14 from their hostels in the town of Chibok -- a case that drew international outrage and prompted a global campaign for their release.

Bukar Kyari, a local vigilante fighting Boko Haram in Maiduguri, said the female hostages escaped Friday while their captors left their camp to launch an attack against the military and police in nearby town of Damboa.

Minister on protecting Nigeria's girls

Was ransom money funneled to Boko Haram?

Officials: At least 20 more girls taken

But soldiers overwhelmed the insurgents, forcing them to mobilize all their men and leave the abducted women in the camp, Kyari said.

"The women seized that rare opportunity to escape when they realized they were alone in the camp," Kyari said. "But we still have five women, including a nursing mother, missing."

News of the escape was slow to emerge due to trouble with telecommunications towers in the area destroyed by previous Boko Haram attacks.

Boko Haram has recently intensified abductions of women in northeastern Borno state where its five-year insurgency is largely concentrated.

When a group of women and girls abducted in November were later rescued from Boko Haram, some were pregnant or had children. Others had been forcibly converted to Islam and married off to their kidnappers. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

GRANNY VS BURGLAR-VO-WIPE

THE JULY FOURTH HOLIDAY WEEKEND BOILED OVER FOR ONE ELDERLY WOMAN AND A MAN WHO TRIED TO ROB HER.

THE 83-YEAR OLD HOUSTON WOMAN SAYS EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING SHE WAS GETTING OUT OF THE SHOWER WHEN SHE NOTICED SOMETHING DIFFERENT ABOUT HER HOUSE.

SHE SAYS A MAN APPROACHED HER WITH A SHEET OVER HIS FACE AND DEMANDED MONEY.

SHE WASN'T GOING TO TAKE IT AND STARTED TO FIGHT.

HOUSTON --

An 83-year-old woman says she was robbed early Sunday, but fought off the burglar with a stick and a pot full of boiling water when she discovered her home in northeast Houston was invaded.

Lillie McClendon says the suspect choked her and demanded to know where she kept her money.

McClendon's daughter, Anita McClendon, got the disturbing phone call early this morning.

"It was the neighbor's number. They said my mom's house had been broken into," Anita said. "That just made me shake. It was about 6:30 and I still can't shake it off."

The home on Lockwood where her mother has lived for more than 50 years had been broken into. Her mother, who they call 'My dear,' was inside.

Lillie say she'd just showered and put a load of wash in when she saw a quilt on the floor, other things out of place and a window wide open.

"I couldn't see his face, just his eyes like that. All he was asking about was, 'Where's that money at? Where's that money at?'" she said.

The 83-year-old, who had just celebrated her birthday with family on Independence Day, had words for the man coming at her.

"I told him, I said, 'What kind of momma you got that raised you up like this? You oughta be ashamed of yourself,'" said Lillie.

She wasn't going to take it and fought him off.

"Oh shoot yeah. I got a stick and tried to hit him," she said. "I had sausage on the stove. I put hot water on him."

While he got away. he should have some minor injuries.

Lillie's family is relieved that's all she has, too, but say the man picked the wrong house today.

"Come in here to rob her, hurt her, harm her, to get something from her that she don't have, shame on you because that's despicable," said her daughter, Anita.

The suspect remains on the loose. If you have any information on this case, you're being asked to call authorities.

LIGHTNING STRIKES AND FIRES-VOWIPE

A NAPLES COUPLE LOST THEIR HOUSE OVER THE WEEKEND FROM A STRONG BOLT OF LIGHTNING.

IT HAPPENED SATURDAY IN QUAIL WEST.

THE HOUSE WAS NOT EQUIPPED WITH LIGHTNING RODS -- EQUIPMENT HOOKED UP TO CHORDS THAT'S SUPPOSED TO KEEP LIGHTNING FROM HOUSES.

BUT NOW A NEW STUDY FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA SHOWS SANDY SOIL IN SOUTHERN STATES MAY ACTUALLY GET IN THE WAY OF THE RODS WORKING AS WELL AS ONCE THOUGHT.

NAPLES COMPANY -- LIGHTNING PROTECTION SERVICES - TELLS ABC-7 THEY TEST THE SOIL SO THEY KNOW WHAT TYPE OF LIGHTNING PROTECTION TO PROVIDE -- AND WHEN INSTALLED CORRECTLY -- IT CAN OFFER A 93 PERCENT PROTECTION FROM LIGHTNING STRIKES CAUSING A FIRE. Return to index of stories...

GOOGLE GLASS PASSWORDS-BNC

REMEMBER THE KID BACK IN SCHOOL WHO TRIED TO CHEAT BY LOOKING OVER YOUR SHOULDER AND COPYING YOUR TEST ANSWERS?

GOOGLE GLASS PASSWORDS-PKG

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--

5-1-2-0.

Laurie: You're right. That was my password.

HE DIDN'T SEE ME TYPE IT IN -- SO HOW DID THIS SECURITY RESEARCHER FIGURE OUT MY IPAD PIN NUMBER?

LET'S TAKE A STEP BACK -- YOU'RE AT A COFFEE SHOP, READING THE IPADaÿ YOU ENTER YOUR PASSWORD AND START BROWSINGaÿ. PRETTY BASIC PROTOCOL THESE DAYS.

WELCOME TO A BRAVE NEW WORLDaÿ TEN FEET ACROSS FROM YOUaÿ A HACKER COULD STEAL YOUR PASSWORD USING NEW TECHNOLOGY aÿ

They see the screen, they see your finger, and pretty much your passcode is stolen.

USING GOOGLE GLASS - OR ANY OTHER RECORDING DEVICE, LIKE CELL PHONE VIDEO OR A CAMCORDER - SECURITY RESEARCHER XINWEN FU CAN CRACK YOUR PIN.

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS.

If we know the position of the finger then we know the position of the finger on the keyboard, the position you touch is a key so we call that touch point

.We can actually match this touch point to a reference keyboard to an actual keyboard and we get your key.

I mean you don't have access to my device so what is that gonna do?

So we only use the passcode as one example to demonstrate the danger. What if you actually used mobile banking to type in your password and access your banking?

So that's very dangerous. We may steal your passwords. Your bank account password.

THE VULNERABILITY, XINWEN SAYS, IS THAT KEYS ARE ALWAYS IN THE SAME PLACE. THERE ARE TOOLS FOR RANDOMIZING THE LOCATION OF KEYS ON A KEYBOARD, AND THAT WOULD MAKE SOMETHING LIKE THIS IMPOSSIBLE. THOSE TOOLS AREN'T WIDESPREAD, BUT XINWEN HOPES EXPOSING THE DANGERS WILL LEAD TO SOLUTIONS. Return to index of stories...
