"I mean, as long as it helps the kids, I think its something good."

MORE WORK FOR YOUR STUDENTS.

AN EXTRA HOUR IN SCHOOL.

TONIGHT - ABC7 FOUND OUT WHY HUNDREDS OF LEE AND COLLIER COUNTY STUDENTS WON'T BE HEADING HOME WHEN THE BELL RINGS.

TAKE A LOOK AT THE BREAKDOWN.

NINE LEE COUNTY EAND SEVEN COLLIER COUNTY ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS ARE ON THE STATE'S LOW 300 LIST.

THAT'S A LIST OF FLORIDA SCHOOLS WHERE ELEMENTARY STUDENTS DIDN'T MAKE THE GRADE WHEN IT CAME TO READING SCORES ON THE F-CAT.

INITIALLY IT WAS JUST A LIST OF 100 SCHOOLS.

LAWMAKERS CHOSE TO EXTEND EVERY SCHOOL DAY BY ONE HOUR FOR THE 300 LOWEST PERFORMING ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.

STATE EDUCATORS SAY RESEARCH SHOWS THE ADDED HOUR HELPS STUDENTS.

PARENTS AND EDUCATORS ARE MIXED. Return to index of stories...

14:02:16-21 Dave Habig/ Parent - "As long as they use that extra hour to actually do something with the kids, I think its a good idea." 14:02:21

14:18:46-51 Donna Mutzenard/ Executive Director, Island Coast FEA - "I think its a bad decision, I think the timing is terrible."

IF YOU'RE ELEMENTARY STUDENT SCORED A FIVE ON F-CAT READING THEY CAN SKIP THE EXTRA HOUR.

THE LEE COUNTY TEACHERS UNION SUPPORTS THE HOUR BUT SAYS IT WILL CAUSE SCHEDULING ISSUES.

NOT ONLY THAT, BUT THE STATE'S ALSO REPLACING THE F-CAT WITH THE FLORIDA STANDARDS ASSEMENT OR F-S-A.

SHE SAYS IN LIGHT OF THAT EXPANDING THE LIST DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. Return to index of stories...

STORM CHANCES FOR THE WEEKEND

Scattered showers and storms again developed on Friday, but the coverage was lower courtesy of some Saharan dust working through the area. What storms are left will diminish this evening, as temps fall into the 70s. Expect a quiet overnight, with lows in the mid 70s.

Rain and storm chances continue heading into the weekend. We'll see plenty of morning sunshine across the area, with scattered showers and storms developing in the PM hours.

The Saharan dust will be making its exit on Saturday, so coverage of storms may again be lower than usual. Highs on Saturday will be in the low 90s.

The threat for storms will continue into Sunday. Once again, expect a dry morning with partly cloudy skies and showers and storms popping up in the PM hours. Highs on Sunday will be in the low 90s.

The typical July weather pattern looks to continue into next week. Monday & Tuesday will also feature PM showers and storms across the area, with highs in the low 90s.

There are some indications that by midweek some dry air may work into Southwest Florida. This would lower the rain and storm chances from Wednesday thru Friday, but likely not eliminate the threat. Temps will hold in the low 90s.

Tropical Update

It is very quiet in the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea and the open waters of the Atlantic as we head into the weekend. With Saharan dust in the area, it will be difficult for any tropical disturbances to develop.

No major activity is expected in the tropics over the next 5 days. Return to index of stories...
