SCATTERED PM STORMS TODAY

Monday morning starts with mainly clear skies and mild temperatures. We'll head into the low to mid 90s for highs this afternoon, with heat index values feeling about 5 degrees warmer than our temperatures. Winds today will be from the south-southeast this morning, turning onshore by late morning toward midday. under the sea! Under the sea! Darling its better down where its wetter take it from me!

ALMOST 500 DIVERS AND SNORKELERS JOINED TOGETHER THIS WEEKEND --

TO CELEBRATE THE 30TH ANNUAL LOWER KEYS UNDERWATER MUSIC FESTIVAL.

THEY MET AT THE FLORIDA KEYS NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY TO HAVE A CONCERT UNDERWATER.

THE UNDERWATER VISIBILITY WAS ABOUT 50 FEET.

SOME DIVERS WORE COSTUMES AND PRETENDED TO PLAY UNDERWATER MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS.

Almost 500 divers and snorkelers explored an area of the Florida Keys

National Marine Sanctuary Saturday, while rocking to a sub-sea concert

during the 30th annual Lower Keys Underwater Music Festival.

The quirky songfest took place at Looe Key Reef, part of continental America

's only living coral barrier reef, some six miles south of Big Pine Key. For

the past three decades, the event has drawn several hundred divers and

snorkelers each year to immerse themselves in the Keys' colorful marine

environment.

"It's the only place we know that we put music underwater for the divers,

snorkelers, and marine life," said festival co-founder and coordinator Bill

Becker. "The fish seem to sway with the music underwater. It's pretty

amazing."

The four-hour marine musical event was staged by Keys radio station US1

Radio 104.1 FM in partnership with the Lower Keys Chamber of Commerce. The

ocean-themed musical selections were broadcast underwater via speakers

suspended beneath boats above the reef.

"We play a lot of the usual stuff - the theme from 'The Little Mermaid,'

Octopus's Garden, Yellow Submarine, a lot of Jimmy Buffett," Becker said. "

New Age music sounds terrific underwater. We do the theme from 'Jaws' to

keep the divers on their toes."

"Music underwater - I've never heard of that before, so that's really a

unique thing," said participating snorkeler Uli Clef from Munich, Germany.

As well as offering enjoyment for dive enthusiasts, the festival carried

serious messages of reef preservation. The broadcast incorporated diver

awareness announcements emphasizing ways to enjoy the coral reef while

minimizing impacts on the underwater environment. Return to index of stories...
