ARMY SERGEANT BOWE BERGDAHL IS BACK ON ACTIVE DUTY TONIGHT --

JUST TWO MONTHS AFTER BEING RELEASED FROM TALIBAN CAPTIVITY.

THE TALIBAN HELD BERGDAHL FOR FIVE YEARS --

BEFORE PRESIDENT OBAMA NEGOTIATED A CONTROVERSIAL TRADE TO GET HIM BACK.

A-B-C'S SUSAN SAULNY FOUND OUT WHY THE MAN WHOSE LOYALTY HAS BEEN QUESTIONED --

WASHINGTON - A senior defense official says Bowe Bergdahl, the Army sergeant who spent nearly five years as a Taliban captive in Afghanistan, has been returned to regular Army duty.

As of Monday he is assigned to U.S. Army North at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston in Texas. That is the same location where he has been decompressing from the effects of his lengthy captivity.

His exact duties were not immediately disclosed.

The Army was expected to officially announce the Bergdahl move Monday. A senior defense official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to provide details about the decision on the record before the announcement.

Bergdahl was released from captivity on May 31 in exchange for five top Taliban commanders imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay.

KKK FLYERS ON CARS-VO-WIPE

NEW AT 530 --

A LETTER SHOWING UP ON CARS IN GEORGIA IS CAUSING CONTROVERSY.

THE TITLE READS --

"SAVE OUR LAND, AND JOIN OUR KLAN" --

YES, THEY'RE RECRUITING PEOPLE FOR THE K-K-K.

THE FLYER COMES FROM A NORTH CAROLINA ORGANIZATION THAT CLAIMS TO BE CHRISTIAN.

THEY'RE ENCOURAGING RESIDENTS TO CALL THE NUMBER AND JOIN.

ONE MAN INITIALLY THOUGHT IT WAS A TICKET.

THEN HE READ IT.

ATLANTA ? Residents in two local neighborhoods are spreading the word about Ku Klux Klan flyers left on cars.

"This is something you hear about, but when you get it on your own personal car it makes it real," Miles Keenlyside said.

Keenlyside found a flyer on his car and, at first, said he thought it was a ticket. It was actually a flyer encouraging him to "Join the Klan."

"Save the land, Join the Klan," the flyer reads. It also said, "We are a law-abiding Christian organization."

At the top of the flyer, a North Carolina-area phone number is listed.

Channel 2 called that number and heard the number's voicemail greeting.

"Remember, if it ain't white, it ain't right. White power," the message said.

An hour later, a KKK grand wizard returned the call.

"This is our national flyer drive," Grand Wizard Robert Jones said. "God is the author of segregation. He is the one who drew the color line."

One man disagreed, confronting Klansmen he saw distributing the flyers in his Cabbagetown neighborhood.

Another woman said she was not afraid of the Klansmen.

"They didn't intimidate us. Whatsoever. We rippe down every flyer they put up, ten second after they put it up," Cabbagetown resident Catlin Shay-Winkler said.

Keenlyside, who grew up in Georgia, said the Klan's history of hate crimes is not something to be proud of or to be spread.

"One thing I say all the time is how progressive Atlanta is when I go up north and when I come down here and see this in my neighborhood, it upsets me," Keenlyside said.

Shay-Winkler is confident the flyers will not persuade people to revert to previous times.

"it's something of the past, you know, it's not like the Klan is coming back," Shay-Winkler said.

The flyer is alerting neighbors of the Klan's neighborhood watch.

The group held an anti-immigration rally in Atlanta in March.

There are currently no future rallies planned in the area. Return to index of stories...

This is something you hear about, but when you get it on your own personal car it makes it real

THE CHRISTIAN GROUP SAID THAT THEY WERE PROMOTING THEIR NATIONAL FLYER DRIVE.

THE GROUP HELD A RALLY IN ATLANTA BACK IN MARCH.

Whatsoever. We ripped down every flyer they put up, ten second after they put it up," Cabbagetown resident Catlin Shay-Winkler said.

Return to index of stories...

WEATHER TEASE-WXWALL

Monday afternoon will starts with mainly clear skies and mild temperatures. A few northbound scattered showers may scrape our coastal communities, but coverage of this rain should be isolated.

We'll head into the low to mid 90s for highs this afternoon, with heat index values feeling about 5 degrees warmer than our temperatures.

Winds today will be from the south-southeast this morning, turning onshore by late morning toward midday. After starting with mainly clear skies, clouds will build through the midday and early afternoon.

Scattered showers and storms are expected through the afternoon hours. The I-75 and highway 41 corridors will be right in the path of the afternoon storms.

The overall weather pattern in Southwest Florida will change for the next few days. A cold front will move through into the southeastern United States Tuesday through Thursday. That will influence our weather by shifting the winds to become south and southwesterly.

With those onshore winds, we stand the chance for some rain or storms to move onshore in the morning hours, especially on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

TROPICAL UPDATE

There continues to be no tropical cyclones active in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. No tropical cyclone development is anticipated in the next three to five days. Return to index of stories...

vigilance is what it is.

EVEN ON A QUIET DAY, THERE'S STILL PLENTY OF ACTION.

15;32;09;33 GUTMAN: So this boat over here is being pulled over by FWL

because it's parked right in the channel which these guys say is a lack of

FLEEING FELON ARREST-SS-VO-SS

THE SEARCH FOR A MAN ACCUSED OF TRYING TO HIT A LEE COUNTY DEPUTY WITH A CAR HAS RE-LAUNCHED TONIGHT.

OCTAVIUS PULLEN WAS ARRESTED LAST TUESDAY.

DEPUTIES SAY HE AND HIS PARTNER IN CRIME -- JOSHUA WHITE -- TRIED TO RUN FROM DEPUTIES AFTER A TRAFFIC STOP.

PULLEN IS ACCUSED OF HITTING A DEPUTY CRUISER IN THE CHASE.

THE TWO WERE EVENTUALLY ARRESTED.

PULLEN EVENTUALLY BONDED OUT.

BUT TONIGHT -- HE'S NOW WANTED ON SEPARATE CHARGES OF BURGLARY AND GRAND THEFT.

IF YOU KNOW WHERE HE IS --

CALL CRIMESTOPPERS.

Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers is asking for the public's help tracking down a man who was jailed just last week after running from deputies, and ultimately tried to run one over.

Octavius Pullen was arrested last Tuesday, July 8th after a series of events that stemmed from him simply not pulling over for a traffic stop. When a deputy attempted the stop in the area of Palm Beach Boulevard and Ortiz Avenue around 2 p.m., Pullen and his partner in crime, Joshua White, took off. A second deputy arrived and attempted to stop the car, at which point Pullen slammed on the brakes, causing the marked Lee County Sheriff's Office vehicle to employ evasive maneuvers to avoid a collision. Upon moving to the right, Pullen then collided with the deputy's car, then kept going.

After the fleeing vehicle ran into a tree, both suspects took off on foot. Deputies quickly apprehended Pullen, and K-9 Triton apprehended White in a canal. Pullen was charged with 7 felony crimes that afternoon, including two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer, hit and run, as well as fleeing and eluding. After just over two days in jail, he bonded out on Friday, July 11, and now he's wanted for armed burglary, grand theft and the grand theft of a firearm.

"At the time, there didn't seem to be any clear cut reason why Pullen and White would have taken such dramatic actions, and put the lives of so many people at risk," said Trish Routte, Crime Stoppers Coordinator. "Now we know why they were running - they are believed to have just broken into a home in the southern part of the county, and didn't want to get caught with stolen goods."

Detectives say that after Pullen was arrested, his car was impounded and a search warrant issued. Upon investigation, detectives found evidence that Pullen was involved in a home burglary that had just occurred a few hours prior on Elaine Drive. Pullen was in possession of multiple items, including guns, which were stolen during the commission of the burglary. While some of the weapons were recovered, several are still missing.

Pullen is a 28 year old convicted felon, with prior arrests for armed robbery, resisting officers, fraud and driving with a suspended license, among other charges.

Pullen should be considered armed and dangerous, especially given his actions of last week. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Octavius Pullen is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous and will be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000. Tips may also be made online at www.swflcrimestoppers.org or by texting a tip to CRIMES Keyword: REWARD.

Note: A photo of Octavius Pullen is attached to this release.

WX TEASE-WXWALL

THERE'S A REASON THEY CALL IT COMFORT FOOD.

TONIGHT - ABC7 HAS SOME NOT-SO-COMFORTING NEWS.

A NEW STUDY SUGGESTS THAT WOMEN WHO INDULGE IN HIGH-FAT FOOD BECAUSE OF STRESS COULD PACK ON THE POUNDS FASTER.

OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY RESEARCHERS FOUND STRESSFUL SITUATIONS CAUSED WOMEN TO BURN CALORIES SLOWER.

IF YOU'RE STRESSED OUT DAILY THEN THOSE CALORIES WILL ADD UP -- THEY CAN CAUSE YOU TO GAIN 11 POUNDS A YEAR. Return to index of stories...

GYM & HIGHER GPA-VO

IT MAKES US FEEL BETTER AND CAN MAKE US THINK BETTER, TOO.

YEP ANOTHER REASON TO EXERCISE.

A RECENT STUDY COMPARED COLLEGE STUDENTS WITH GYM MEMBERSHIPS TO THOSE WHO WITHOUT.

RESEARCHERS FOUND PHYSICALLY ACTIVE STUDENTS WERE MORE LIKLEY TO HAVE HIGHER G-P-A'S DURING THEIR FIRST YEARS OF COLLEGE.

THAT'S NOT ALL.

THOSE WHO WORKED OUT WERE LESS LIKLEY TO DROP OUT.

WE ALL KNOW THERE PHYSICAL BENEFITS OF EXERCISE AND WHILE THERE'S NO DOUBT HITTING THE GYM MAKES US FEEL BETTER -- NEW RESEARCH SUGGESTS IT MAY ALSO MAKE US THINK BETTER TOO.

THEY FOUND A POWERFUL LINK

THIS NEW RESEARCH LOOKED AT COLLEGE KIDS AND IT SHOWED A POWERFUL LINK BETWEEN THOSE WHO HAD FITNESS CENTER MEMBERSHIPS AND THOSE WHO GOT GOOD GRADES

THE STUDY WAS DONE BY MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY RESEARCHERS WHO LOOKED AT NEARLY FIVE THOUSAND FRESHMAN AND SOPHOMORES.

WERE MEMBERS OF THE GYM OR INVOLVED IN RECREATIONAL SPORTS DURING THEIR FIRST TWO YEARS IN COLLEGE WENT ON TO HAVE HIGHER G-P-A'S OVERALL, BY NEARLY 0.13 POINTS.

AND BEYOND HIGH GRADES, THOSE WHO HAD MEMBERSHIPS WERE LESS LIKELY TO DROP OUT OF SCHOOL THAN THOSE WHO DIDN'T.

THIS STUDY LOOKED SPECIFICALLY AT COLLEGE KIDS IN THOSE TWO MEASURABLE WAYS AND THE RESEARCHERS SAY THE STUDY SUPPORTS THE THEORY THAT BY CREATING CONNECTIONS BETWEEN STUDENTS AND AN INSTITUTION, LIKE A UNIVERSITY RECREATIONAL FACILITY, YOU CAN SEE AN INCREASE IN ACADEMIC SUCCESS.
