BONITA BRUSH FIRE-ONCAM

A FAST-MOVING BRUSH FIRE SPARKED BY LIGHTNING THREATENED SEVERAL HOMES IN BONITA SPRINGS TODAY.

ABC 7'S TRENT KELLY WAS AT THE SCENE -- AND SPOKE TO NEIGHBORS WHO SAY THE FIRE GOT SO CLOSE. THEY HAD TO TAKE ACTION THEMSELVES. Return to index of stories...

BONITA BRUSH FIRE-PKG

Jesse Reza / Bonita Springs

"We heard the thunder just shake the house."

SHAKING HOMES -- BUT ALSO RATTLING NERVES --

Zuleika Zamudio / Bonita Springs

"It got really close, so we were really worried about it."

THESE NEIGHBORS IN BONITA SPRINGS ARE LUCKY TO STILL HAVE THEIR HOMES -- AFTER LIGHTNING SPARKED A BRUSH FIRE OFF EAST TERRY STREET.THAT QUICKLY SPREAD.

Jesse Reza / Bonita Springs

"I come out, and it was just a little fire. And all of a sudden, within just five minutes, it ignited real fast."

Trent Kelly / Reporting

"With the fire quickly approaching, some neighbors decided to take matters into their own hands. They grabbed their garden hose, all in an effort to keep the flames from reaching their property."

JESSE REZA IS ONE OF THOSE FAST ACTING NEIGHBORS.

Jesse Reza / Bonita Springs

"It did get hot, and you could feel the heat."

FUELED BY THICK BRUSH AND HEAVY WINDS -- THE FIVE ACRE FIRE CAME WITHIN FEET OF BURNING A HANDFUL OF HOMES -- AND EVEN A CHURCH.

BUT FIGHTING IT WASN'T EASY -- EVEN FOR THE PROFESSIONALS.

Frank Giuliano / Deputy Chief, Bonita Springs Fire Rescue

"The brush is very heavy back in there, with a lot of fuel. It's hard to get our vehicles in there."

CREWS WERE ABLE TO GET A HANDLE ON THE FIRE AFTER ABOUT 20 MINUTES. BEFORE IT COULD REACH ANY HOMES. BUT THESE AMATEUR FIREFIGHTERS ARE CONVINCED -- IF NOT FOR THEIR QUICK THINKING. THINGS COULD HAVE ENDED MUCH DIFFERENTLY.

Zuleika Zamudio / Bonita Springs

"It was just instinct, you know."

Jesse Reza / Bonita Springs

"Thank God they stopped it in time, you know. It could have been worse."

Better rain chances on Monday

Spotty showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue bubbling up along the US 41 and I-75 corridors this evening. Though the activity will remain fairly low in coverage, be aware that with these passing showers, they could provide a good dose of rain before weakening.

We'll have more moisture available in the atmosphere on Monday, and that should allow for a more widespread coverage of rain and thunder. Though the morning hours should remain quiet, past noon we'll be expecting to see some showers or storms begin to pop up, especially for areas along I-75 and eastward.

Temperatures look a little cooler on Monday, only topping out at 93 degrees in the afternoon. Though that is still warm, it is several degrees cooler than where communities topped out this past weekend.

A decent coverage of scattered showers and storms is expected on Tuesday with highs around 91 degrees. Return to index of stories...
