WEATHER

Better rain chances on Monday

Spotty showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue bubbling up along the US 41 and I-75 corridors this evening. Though the activity will remain fairly low in coverage, be aware that with these passing showers, they could provide a good dose of rain before weakening.

We'll have more moisture available in the atmosphere on Monday, and that should allow for a more widespread coverage of rain and thunder. Though the morning hours should remain quiet, past noon we'll be expecting to see some showers or storms begin to pop up, especially for areas along I-75 and eastward.

Temperatures look a little cooler on Monday, only topping out at 93 degrees in the afternoon. Though that is still warm, it is several degrees cooler than where communities topped out this past weekend.

A decent coverage of scattered showers and storms is expected on Tuesday with highs around 91 degrees Return to index of stories...

Joe/Chloe. This fire was spreading so fast, I'm told neighbors had no choice but to grab their garden hoses to try and keep the flames from spreading towards their homes.

If you look behind me, you can see the fire has for the most part been put out. Right now crews are just working on putting out the few remaining hot spots here. Return to index of stories...

Here's some video of what it looked like when we first got here.

This all started around 3-30. When lightning struck this wooded area right next to the Harvest Community Church on East Terry Avenue.

I spoke to a pastor at the church who says he was here to play basketball with some friends when he heard the thunder. Which was so loud. He actually thought it struck the church at first.

That lightning sparked a brush fire, which quickly grew to about 5 acres large because of the strong winds at the time and the heavy brush.

The fire not only threatened the church, but also about 10 nearby homes -- whose owners actually grabbed their garden hoses to keep the flames away. Return to index of stories...

Thankfully, firefighters were able to get a good handle on the fire once they arrived. It took them about 15 minutes to get it under control.

They tell me they'll be out here for at least another half hour or so as they make sure nothing flares back up.

A good outcome in what could have been a very bad situation.
