EBOLA OUTBREAK-VOTOPS TCMON

DEVELOPING TONIGHT -- EVACUATIONS ARE UNDERWAY IN THE WEST AFRICAN COUNTRY OF LIBERIA -- AS ONE AMERICAN HAS DIED FROM EBOLA -- AND TWO OTHERS ARE BIENG TREATED FOR THE DEADLY VIRUS.

GOOD EVENING - I'M COURTNEY ROBINSON.

THANKS FOR WATCHING A-B-C 7.

THOSE THAT ARE BEING EVACUATED WORK FOR 'SIM' AND SAMARITAN'S PURSE -- TWO ORGANIZATIONS THAT SUPPLY AID WORKERS TO THE COUNTRY.

AS A-B-C'S KAREN TRAVERS EXPLAINS -- WORKERS ARE LEAVING THE COUNTRY DUE TO THE ALRMING RATES OF EBOLA CASES. Return to index of stories...

EBOLA OUTBREAK-PKG

FEARS ARE INCREASING THAT EBOLA MAY SPREAD.

TWO AMERICAN AID WORKERS ARE IN SERIOUS CONDITION AFTER CONTRACTING THE

DEADLY VIRUS IN LIBERIA.THE FRONT LINE OF THIS OUTBREAK IN WEST AFRICA.

DR. KENT BRANTLY WORKS FOR SAMARTIAN'S PURSE, A NORTH CAROLINA BASED

EVANGELICAL CHRISTIAN CHARITY WHICH ANNOUNCED IT WILL EVACUATE ALL NON

ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL FROM LIBERIA.

Kent Smith, Elder, Southside Church of Christ: AP-APTN-1030: US Ebola

he knew the danger he was placing himself in and he willingly and

voluntarily decided to do that.

MORE THAN 12-HUNDRED PEOPLE HAVE CONTRACTED THE EBOLA VIRUS IN WEST AFRICA.

.AND EXPERTS ARE CALLING THIS THE LARGEST OUTBREAK EVER. NEARLY 700 PEOPLE

HAVE DIED.

THE DISEASE ISN'T SPREAD LIKE THE FLU - IT REQUIRES DIRECT CONTACT WITH

BODILY FLUIDS.

THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION SAYS THAT AMERICANS SHOULD

NOT PANIC.

Dr. Stephan Monroe, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

We're pretty confident that the normal isolation protocols in U.S. or

western-style medicine would prevent transmission.

STILL THE CDC IS URGING ALL DOCTORS HERE IN THE US TO BE ON THE WATCH FOR

ANYONE TRAVELING FROM THAT REGION WHO MAY SHOW SYMPTOMS INCLUDING FEVER,

RASH, VOMITING AND DIARHEA.

THE AMERICAN WIDOW OF A LIBERIAN GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL WHO DIED OF EBOLA LAST

WEEK IS SPEAKING OUT. SHE SAYS HER HUSBAND HAD PLANNED TO TRAVEL FROM AFRICA

HOME TO MINNESOTA NEXT MONTH.

Decontee Sawyer, husband died of Ebola AP-APTN-0830: US Ebola

we've already lost Patrick and we're losing tons of people there. And we don

't need that killer to come here as well

O/C CLOSE: MEDICAL EXPERTS SAID AMERICANS SHOULD AVOID CASUAL TRAVEL TO WEST

STOWAWAYS BODY FOUND-SOTVO

"laboratory results that were taken from samples from the body confirmed negative test results for communicable diseases, and the cause of death, as well as the other circumstances surrounding this incident, remains under investigation."

THE MILITARY ADMITS --

NO ONE SPOTTED THIS GUY DURING THE INITIAL POST-FLIGHT INSPECTION.

MAINTENANCE CREWS ONLY FOUND HIM LATER.

"THE BODY OF AN APPARENT STOWAWAY WAS FOUND TRAPPED IN A COMPARTMENT ABOVE THE AIRCRAFT'S REAR LANDING GEAR. THE DECEASED WAS AN ADOLESCENT BLACK MALE, POSSIBLY OF AFRICAN ORIGIN. AT THIS POINT IS IT UKNOWN WHERE OR WHEN THE DECEASED ENTERED THE LANDING GEAR WHEEL WELL."

EVEN THE YOUNG MAN'S NATIONALITY IS A MYSTERY, HEIGHTENING CONCERNS ABOUT THE SERIOUS SECURITY BREACH EVEN FURTHER. OFFICIALS SAY THE PLANE LEFT ON JULY 19TH FOR AN EIGHT DAY MISSION VISITING ITALY, SENEGAL, MALI, CHAD, AND TUNISIA, ALTHOUGH THEY WON'T SAY IN WHICH ORDER.

THIS MUCH IS KNOWN: MILITARY FLIGHTS IN SOME PARTS OF AFRICA ARE ROUTINELY EXPOSED TO FAR LESS THAN IDEAL SECURITY. THIS VIDEO WAS SHOT WHEN A U.S. PLANE MADE AN EMERGENCY LANDING IN UGANDA JUST LAST WEEK AND WAS SWARMED BY LOCAL FOLKS.

THE LATEST INCIDENT IS EERILY SIMILAR TO ONE JUST LAST MONTH IN WHICH A SOMALI-AMERICAN TEENAGER SURVIVED AFTER STOWING AWAY IN THE WHEEL WELL OF A COMMERCIAL PLANE THAT FLEW FROM CALIFORNIA TO HAWAII.

AND COMPLICATING THE LATEST INCIDENT FURTHER: THE OUTBREAK OF DEADLY EBOLA THAT IS RAVAGING SOME AFRICAN COMMUNITIES.AGAIN, RAISING STRONG CONCERNS ABOUT SECURITY.

MILITARY OFFICIALS SAY THE YOUNG MAN'S PRESENCE DID NOT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE IN THE HANDLING OF THE PLANE, AND HE WASN'T EVEN SPOTTED DURING THE INITIAL POST-FLIGHT INSPECTION. HE WAS ONLY DISCOVERED WHEN MAINTENANCE CREWS WENT OVER THE PLANE MORE THOROUGHLY LATER ON.

SCRIPT:

ATLANTA: UPS says they are investigating one of their drivers after a man

says he handed him a makeshift noose during an office delivery.

David Mitchell says part of his job is receiving packages as they come in.

He says the driver acted strangely when they first encountered each other

and then he says it escalated to a point where the driver tied a makeshift

noose in front of him with packing material and handed it to him

"I go pick up and this is what he made in front of me and handed to me.

Signifying a noose. A makeshift noose," Mitchell says.

As Mitchell held this makeshift noose up, he started to get emotional

thinking about his immediate reaction when a co-worker asked what happened

between him and a white UPS driver.

"I said, 'I'm trying to be all right you won't believe what just occurred,'"

Mitchell says.

What occurred is something Mitchell will never forget. He says after the

driver shoved boxes in his chest, he used the packing material and quickly

tied a knot.

Channel 2's Craig Lucie contacted UPS about this driver. They won't release

his name, but they released a statement.

"It is under investigation, and we are taking this very seriously. We have

met with the customer, and there is nothing more to share since it's still

being investigated," the statement read.

The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office has assigned a detective to the case to

investigate it as a hate crime.

Mitchell says the driver's anger toward him grew this past month after they

first crossed paths in the loading dock area.

"He refused to give me the package to deliver and I said, 'I work here.' Use

key card open the door," Mitchell says.

He says UPS told him they reassigned the driver to another route, but he

wants to see a harsh punishment.

"They said it's a 'he-said-she-said.' I don't go to work with makeshift

nooses in my back pocket," Mitchell says.

Mitchell says he is worried that the driver could retaliate since he knows

where he works.

WEATHER TEASE-WXWALL

As our winds continue to come in from the Gulf of Mexico today, we'll keep the chance for passing downpours to wash ashore and work their way eastward across Southwest Florida again today. We'll see some of those downpours through the morning, but the door remains open for rain at any time today.

Afternoon high temperatures will reach into the upper 80s at the beaches to the lower 90s inland. With humidity it will once again feel like we are near 100 degrees. Other than the passing downpours, our skies will be partly sunny.

Some isolated showers will wash ashore again tomorrow morning and through the day tomorrow. Then we transition toward more of an afternoon storm pattern by Friday and into the upcoming weekend. Highs will stay in the lower 90 and lows in the mid and upper 70s.

TROPICAL UPDATE

We're tracking a tropical wave in the central Atlantic continuing to show high probability of development. The National Hurricane Center has placed the potential for development at 70% in the next couple of days and through the next 5 days.

There's a good possibility that it develops into a tropical depression or perhaps even a tropical storm over the next couple days.

The track through the end of the week will be west and northwest, taking this feature toward the Windward Islands by the weekend.

Most forecast models still suggest this storm will eventually curve to the north by next week, which would keep the storm away from the U.S. mainland. Return to index of stories...

SOUTHERN ACCENT CLASS-VOWIPE

LIVING HERE IN FLORIDA MANY PEOPLE HAVE A SOUTHERN ACCENT.

SAYING THINGS LIKE -

"HOWDY" OR "HOW YA'LL DOING?"

WELL LISTEN TO THIS.

A LAB IN TENNESSEE TRIED TO OFFER SPEECH CLASS TO ITS WORKERS WHO HAVE THICK SOUTHERN ACCENTS.

IT WAS CALLED AN ACCENT REDUCTION CLASS.

IT DIDN'T WORK.

EMPLOYEES SAY IT WAS OFFENSIVE AND THE COMPANY IMMEDIATELY SHUTDOWN THE CLASSES.

--LEAD IN--

IF YOU HAVE A SOUTHERN ACCENT -- WOULD YOU CONSIDER SAYING "GOODBYE" TO "HOWDY, Y'ALL"?

THE OAK RIDGE NATIONAL LABORATORY WAS GOING TO OFFER A SPEECH CLASS FOR IT'S WORKERS NEXT MONTH TO DO JUST THAT.

BUT ENOUGH PEOPLE COMPLAINED AT THE LAB -- TO GET IT CANCELED FOR GOOD.

CAMERON TAYLOR HAS MORE.

"Ya'll."

"They're going to come help me in the tobacco today."

"Tire or tired."

WORDS AND PHRASES ALL TRUE SOUTHERNERS KNOW HOW TO SAY.

BUT A NEW TRAINING CLASS AT THE OAK RIDGE NATIONAL LAB WAS TRYING TO HELP SOME EMPLOYEES GET RID OF THEIR SOUTHERN TWANG.

LATE LAST MONDAY, ORNL'S HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCED THE OPTIONAL SOUTHERN ACCENT REDUCTION TRAINING WOULD BEGIN AUGUST 13TH.

BUT AFTER A NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS FROM EMPLOYEES, THE CLASS WAS SHUT DOWN WITHIN 24 HOURS.

"It wasn't the appropriate way to communicate this and we've learned a lesson from that. There was certainly no offense intended and it certainly wasn't the intent to imply there's anything wrong with a southern accent."

ORNL EMPLOYS MORE THAN 4-THOUSAND PEOPLE FROM NEARLY 90 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES.

THE ACCENT REDUCTION CLASSES ARE NOTHING NEW.

BUT TARGETING SOUTHERN ACCENTS IS SOMETHING THE COMPANY HASN'T DONE BEFORE.

THE TRAINING WAS SUPPOSED TO GO FOR 6 WEEKS AT THE ORNL CAMPUS.

BUT FOLKS WE SPOKE WITH SAY THEIR ACCENT HASN'T AFFECTED THEIR PROFESSIONAL LIVES SO FAR.

"It does set you a part a little bit, but no more so than having a northern accent would."

AND FOR SOME, THEY AREN'T WILLING TO GIVE UP A PIECE OF THEIR SOUTHERN PRIDE.

"We aren't going to quit being who we are. Do you go anywhere else and tell people to quit being who they are?"

--TAG--

LAB OFFICIALS SAY THEY ARE WORKING WITH AN OUTSIDE COMPANY TO OFFER THE CLASS TO ANYONE WHO WANTS IT.

Information:

A father in West Haven, Connecticut is feeling very proud after he delivered

his own baby.

David Davis has now seen and done it all after delivering his precious baby

girl, Livia. Mom Lillie is also quite impressed.

It was a wild night inside their West Haven home after they tried going to

the hospital. Lillie says she was sent home from the hospital because she

was only dilated three centimeters.

However when the couple returned home the contractions kept coming. David

helped his wife into the bathroom and ran a bath to calm her down. But

little Livia had other plans in mind.

David says after one of the pushes the baby's head was out and he took

control. David say he couldn't grab his daughter quick enough when she came

out.

And that is how Livia came into the world. And how her parents and big

sister are celebrating another beautiful family moment. Return to index of stories...
