FIRST WEATHER-WX WALL


TROPICAL STORM BERTHA MOVING INTO THE CARIBBEAN SEA.

Tropical Storm Bertha is leaving the Lesser Antilles and is pushing into the Caribbean Sea tonight, after producing tropical storm force winds on the island chain.

The 8 pm advisory from the National Hurricane Center shows sustained winds of 50 mph, with gusts to 65 mph.

The storm is located just northwest of the island of Martinique with a minimum pressure of 1007 mb.

Bertha continues to move rapidly to the West-Northwest at 24 mph. The storm will depart the Lesser Antilles and move into the eastern Caribbean Sea overnight.

Tropical Storm Warnings has been issued for parts of the Bahamas, the Turks and Caicos Islands. Warnings continue for Dominica, Martinique, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands.

Tropical Storm Watches are in effect for the eastern Dominican Republic.

Bertha is expected to stay a tropical storm as it moves towards Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic over the next 24 hours.

The second named storm of the Atlantic Hurricane Season developed late Thursday Night about 300 miles east of Barbados.

Forecast models still indicate the storm will likely turn northwestward late this weekend, impacting the eastern Bahamas and staying well east of Florida. Return to index of stories...
