FIRST WEATHER-WX CTR

Tracking heat and Sunday's rain chances

After a very hot and humid afternoon across Southwest Florida, we will still need to leave the threat for some showers and thunderstorms in the forecast late this afternoon and through the evening.

The atmosphere has plenty of moisture available, and that will remain in place for the rest of the weekend.

Overnight lows will range from the mid to upper 70s along the beaches to low and mid 70s east of I-75.

On Sunday, again we should begin the day with a mix of sun and clouds. Current data supports the setup of some late afternoon and early evening showers and thunderstorms developing once again across the region.

Highs on Sunday should be seasonal reaching 93 at Fort Myers, 94 at Port Charlotte and 90 at Naples.

With the upcoming work week, we'll be expecting a rather typical weather situation for early August in Southwest Florida. Late afternoon showers and thunderstorms will be possible each of the upcoming days, with highs returning into the low and mid 90s each afternoon.

TROPICAL UPDATE

Tropical Storm Bertha continues to churn in the Caribbean Sea. According to data released from the 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon update from the National Hurricane Center, the storm is located around 110 miles south-southwest of Puerto Rico. It continues to move at a relatively quick clip to the west-northwest at 22 mph.

Maximum sustained winds have held steady for the past 24 hours at 50 mph, with gusts at 65 mph.

The tropical storm is expected to move toward the northern side of the island of Hispanola by Sunday morning. Bertha is then expected to remain at tropical storm strength on the eastern side of the Bahamas before showing more of a curl out back toward the Atlantic Ocean.

The Bahamian government will have tropical storm warning active for the southeastern section of the islands today. Puerto Rico will remain under a tropical storm warning today as well.

It appears that by Tuesday the storm could reach hurricane strength.

It continues to show no direct threat or impact to our weather in Southwest Florida. Return to index of stories...

BREAKING NEWS TONIGHT,

A MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR HOME GOES UP IN FLAMES.

FIREFIGHTERS BELIEVE IT MAY HAVE BEEN STRUCK BY LIGHTNING.

A-B-C SEVEN'S TRENT KELLY TAKES A LOOK AT THE DAMAGE. Return to index of stories...

WAIT ISLAND FIRE-PKG

It all stared when a neighbor here at the St. Charles harbor community called 911 after noticing flames coming out of the chimney of the home next door.

This is exclusive video of the home off Waite Island Drive taken just moments after firefighters were able to extinguish those flames.

We're told the fire was pretty much contained to the roof of the home. So the damage is not too visible from the outside.

Thankfully, nobody was inside when the fire broke out. We're told this home -- valued at around 2.5 million dollars -- was just sold to a family living in Massachusetts.

It took firefighters just about an hour to out the fire out. The sheer size of the home made things very difficult.

Lauri McMahon -- Iona-McGregor Fire Dept.

Again, nobody was home at the time, so thankfully there are no injuries to report here tonight.

Right now were told lightning appears to have been the cause, however crews will remain here for the next hour or so to investigate.

Reporting in fort Myers, Trent Kelly NBC 2. Return to index of stories...

A-B-C'S PIERRE THOMAS HAS THIS ABC NEWS EXCLUSIVE Return to index of stories...

DIRTY DOCTOR-PKG

.

Rhea Backes says a drug dealer fed her husband's addiction to powerful

painkillers - a drug dealer in a white coat--an M-D.

BACKES:

"He knows, as a doctor, that that could have killed him. And he didn't care.

"

She is talking about Dr. Norman Werther. Dr. Werther may look the part of

the kindly doctor, but here he is on surveillance video committing a CRIME

DR. WERTHER;

"What's your pain level without the medicine?"

Federal investigators say the "exam" is a just a sham.it takes only four

minutes before he prescribes an undercover informant a painkiller.

DR. WERTHER: "IT'S A LITTLE BLUE PILL WHICH IS CALLED OXYCODONE."

Dr. Werther is part of what federal investigators say is a serious and

growing problem -- doctors who go to the dark side, prescribing highly-

addictive painkillers for profit.

GARY CANTRELL:

"He gave up his medical license for drug dealing. "

*Deputy Inspector General

Department of Health and Human Services

And Werther is hardly the only 'dirty doctor.'

This doctor was caught on undercover cameras writing prescriptions to phony

patients out of a rented motel room -- drugs on demand.

NAT SOUND - - Police, OPEN THE DOOR!

At least 300 doctors or pharmacists have been convicted of Medicare fraud in

the past three years - including about 100 who were busted for illegally

writing painkiller prescriptions.

PIERRE: Were you surprised that doctors were willing to do it in the numbers

you're seeing?

CANTRELL: "It's mind-boggling/they start seeing the cash and they start

buying large homes, new vehicles.

CANTRELL: Mostly it's greed.

And GREED is what apparently what motivated Dr. Werther -- investigators

seized $2.6 million in cash and weapons in the case.

GRFX

He was convicted of participating in a drug ring involving six Philadelphia

gangs - who brought him fake patients, paid him kickbacks to prescribe

painkillers, then resold the drugs on the street.

Rhea Backes says her husband Nate went to Dr. Werther to wean himself off

painkillers.instead, she says, Werther stoked his addiction to collect

money for doctor visits.

BACKES: What he was giving him was an insane amount.

Only 27, Nate overdosed. Dr. Werther was convicted of contributing to his

death.
