FIRST WEATHER-WX CTR

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

STORMS LIKELY BY LATE AFTERNOON

Hot and humid conditions are expected on Sunday across Southwest Florida with the chance for thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening.

High temperatures today are expected to reach near 93 at Fort Myers, 92 at Cape Coral, 94 at Port Charlotte and 90 at Naples.

Through this morning conditions across much of the region should be fairly pleasant under a mix of sun and clouds. There is the potential once again this morning for some showers or thunderstorms to develop over the Gulf of Mexico, but this is only of a concern to boaters as this activity should remain offshore.

By this afternoon we'll bring back the chance for some rain and thunder to the region. It appears that though an isolated shower or storm is possible around the lunch hour, the best chances today will mainly be well into the afternoon for thunderstorms to begin developing along the US41 and I-75 corridors.

Like on Saturday any storms that develop will again bring with them the chance for some locally heavy rain, strong wind gusts and frequent lightning.

On Monday, we'll begin the day with an onshore wind flow. That means we could see a few showers develop during the morning hours that wash ashore before lunchtime. Temps on Monday look to top out in the upper 80s along the coast, with low to mid 90s further inland.

TROPICAL UPDATE

Tropical Storm Bertha continues to churn in the Atlantic Ocean today after impacting the Caribbean on Saturday. According to data released from the 2 a.m. Sunday update from the National Hurricane Center, the storm is located around 30 miles north of Dominican Republic. It continues to move at a relatively quick clip to the northwest at 21 mph.

Maximum sustained winds are at 45 mph.

The tropical storm is expected to move from the northern side of the island of Hispanola through Sunday afternoon. Bertha is then expected to remain at tropical storm strength on the eastern side of the Bahamas before showing more of a curl out back toward the Atlantic Ocean.

The Bahamian government will have tropical storm warning active for the southeastern section of the islands today. Much of Dominican Republic will be under a tropical storm warning today as well.

It appears that by Tuesday the storm could reach hurricane strength.

It continues to show no direct threat or impact to our weather in Southwest Florida.

Additionally, a northbound moving disturbance located over the Bahamas is being monitored by the National Hurricane Center. The feature shows no signs of organization as of this morning and is considered a low risk for any development in the short term off Florida's east coast. Return to index of stories...

SPINEY LOBSTER SEASON-trxVOTOPS

PINY LOBSTER SEASON STARTS THIS WEEK!

IT RUNS AUGUST 6 THROUGH MARCH 31ST.

THE BAG LIMIT IS 12 PER PERSON IN FLORIDA.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS YOU CAN VISIT F-W-C DOT COM.

The 2014 spiny lobster season opens with the two-day recreational sport season July 30 and 31, followed by the regular commercial and recreational lobster season, which starts Aug. 6 and runs through March 31.

Planning on catching some of these tasty crustaceans? Here is what you need to know before you go.

No one wants a small lobster for dinner. Make sure you check the size. Measuring devices are required, and lobsters must be measured while they are in the water. If the carapace length is not larger than 3 inches, it must be left in the water.

Spiny Lobster measurement

To protect the next generation and your future chances to have lobster for dinner, harvest of egg-bearing females is prohibited. Lobsters have hundreds of thousands of eggs that are easily visible and attached under the tail. While most lobsters have completed reproduction by the start of the fishing season, finding lobsters with eggs is common in July and August.

Bring a cooler big enough to hold the entire lobster. Spiny lobsters must remain in whole condition until they are brought to shore. Also, do not take spiny lobster with any device that might puncture, penetrate or crush its shell.

Stick to the bag and possession limits so there will be enough lobsters for all your friends and family. During the two-day spiny lobster sport season, recreational divers and snorkelers can take up to six lobsters per person daily in Monroe County and Biscayne National Park waters and 12 lobsters per person daily in other Florida waters. During the Aug. 6-to-March 31 regular season, the daily recreational bag and on-the-water possession limit is six spiny lobsters per person.

WEATHER-WX CTR

EBOLA PAITENT IN US-PKG

The man you see climbing out of the ambulance -- Doctor Kent Brantly -- is

the first Ebola patient on U.S. soil -- wearing protective gear to prevent

transmission of a vicious virus that has killed hundreds in West Africa over

the past few months.

For now, Doctor Brantly, who was infected while trying to contain a

frightening Ebola outbreak in Liberia, will be treated in a special

isolation ward at Emory University hospital in Atlanta.

Dr. Jay Varkay,

"The unit is actually designed to contain, um, to protect against infections

above and beyond what's probably needed for Ebola."

Doctor Brantly's wife talked to her husband today - separated by thick glass

.

The family is concerned.

SOT Kevin Brantly, Patient's brother

"I know he is feeling a little bit better and I'm hopeful for that."

Doctor Brantly's co-worker at an Ebola treatment center in Liberia is also

infected. Nancy Writebol will arrive back in the U.S. in several days -- in

the same medical evacuation plane that flew her colleague home, equipped

with its special isolation tent.

The Ebola virus spreads by contact with contaminated body fluids, and there

is no cure, alarming some here in the U.S.

SOT Dr. Varkey

"I understand the public concern. It's a new infection for the U.S. But I

really think we have processes that protect not just the patient, but the

public at large."

Still, doctors are taking no chances.

Rhea Backes says a drug dealer fed her husband's addiction to powerful

painkillers - a drug dealer in a white coat--an M-D.

BACKES:

"He knows, as a doctor, that that could have killed him. And he didn't care.

"

She is talking about Dr. Norman Werther. Dr. Werther may look the part of

the kindly doctor, but here he is on surveillance video committing a CRIME

DR. WERTHER;

"What's your pain level without the medicine?"

Federal investigators say the "exam" is a just a sham.it takes only four

minutes before he prescribes an undercover informant a painkiller.

DR. WERTHER: "IT'S A LITTLE BLUE PILL WHICH IS CALLED OXYCODONE."

Dr. Werther is part of what federal investigators say is a serious and

growing problem -- doctors who go to the dark side, prescribing highly-

addictive painkillers for profit.

GARY CANTRELL:

"He gave up his medical license for drug dealing. "

*Deputy Inspector General

Department of Health and Human Services

And Werther is hardly the only 'dirty doctor.'

This doctor was caught on undercover cameras writing prescriptions to phony

patients out of a rented motel room -- drugs on demand.

NAT SOUND - - Police, OPEN THE DOOR!

At least 300 doctors or pharmacists have been convicted of Medicare fraud in

the past three years - including about 100 who were busted for illegally

writing painkiller prescriptions.

PIERRE: Were you surprised that doctors were willing to do it in the numbers

you're seeing?

CANTRELL: "It's mind-boggling/they start seeing the cash and they start

buying large homes, new vehicles.

CANTRELL: Mostly it's greed.

And GREED is what apparently what motivated Dr. Werther -- investigators

seized $2.6 million in cash and weapons in the case.

GRFX

He was convicted of participating in a drug ring involving six Philadelphia

gangs - who brought him fake patients, paid him kickbacks to prescribe

painkillers, then resold the drugs on the street.

Rhea Backes says her husband Nate went to Dr. Werther to wean himself off

painkillers.instead, she says, Werther stoked his addiction to collect

money for doctor visits.

BACKES: What he was giving him was an insane amount.

Only 27, Nate overdosed. Dr. Werther was convicted of contributing to his

death.
