A FEW DOWNPOURS

The onshore wind flow continues today and while the rain chances are not gone, they are lower today. There could be just a passing shower from the morning through midday time frame. Then there will be scattered showers and storms in the afternoon and evening, with the bulk of that activity expected near and east of I-75.

Temperatures on Wednesday will be warmer and more seasonal than yesterday. Highs are likely to reach 93 at Fort Myers, 90 at Naples and 94 at Lehigh Acres.

Late afternoon and early evening showers and storms are expected Thursday and Friday with highs topping out in the low to mid 90s.

TROPICAL UPDATE

Tropical Storm Bertha continues to churn off the east coast of the United States but poses to threat to mainland North America.

Data shows the storm is moving northeast at 23 mph. Maximum sustained winds are down to 50 mph, and the movement of Bertha keeps it away from major land masses.

As the storm moves generally parallel with the eastern American coast it is expected to continue weakening as it advances into the northern Atlantic Ocean.

No other tropical cyclones are active in the Gulf, Caribbean or Atlantic. Return to index of stories...

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.A FEW DOWNPOURS

BUYING A CAR FOR YOUR TEENAGER OR CHILD FOR THE FIRST TIME CAN BE SCARY.

BEST CARS FOR TEENS-TC MON, CG3, TAG

TALK ABOUT STRESSFUL AND TIME CONSUMING--.

FIRST. YOU HAVE TO DO THEIR RESEARCH.

PARENTS IT'S NOT GOOD TO RUSH ON A DECISION LIKE THIS.

AND WHEN DOING RESEARCH THERE are A FEW THINGS TO LOOK INTO.

SAFETY AND EFFICIENCY.

BIGGER AND HEAVIER CARS ARE ACTUALLY BETTER.

THEY CAN PROTECT BETTER IN A CRASH.

YOUNG DIRVERS SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM HIGH HORSEPOWER.

WE DON'T WANT TO BE TEMPTED TO TEST THE LIMITS

AND CARS WITH E-S-C ARE A MUST.

THAT STANDS FOR ELECTRONIC STABILTIY CONTROL.

THE FEATURE HELPS DRIVERS MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE DURING CURVES AND SLIPPERY ROADS.

COMING UP AT 6.

WE WILL TAKE A LOOK AT A FEW MODELS RECOMMENDED BY THE INSURANCE INSTITUTE FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY.

Young drivers should stay away from high horsepower.

Vehicles with more powerful engines can tempt them to test the limits.

Bigger, heavier vehicles protect better in a crash.

There are no minicars or small cars on the recommended list.

Small SUVs are included because their weight is similar to that of a midsize car.

ESC is a must. This feature, which helps a driver maintain control of the vehicle on curves and slippery roads, reduces risk on a level comparable to safety belts.

Vehicles should have the best safety ratings possible.

At a minimum, that means good ratings in the IIHS moderate overlap front test, acceptable ratings in the IIHS side crash test and four or five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Return to index of stories...
