0524 "You need to take protective measures now to protect your life and the life of your loved ones."

OUR BIG STORY TONIGHT AT 530 --

REMEMBERING HURRICANE CHARLEY -- AND ITS IMPACT ACROSS SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.

GOOD EVENING -- I'M JEFF BUTERA.

THANKS FOR WATCHING A-B-C 7 TONIGHT, THE 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE DAY CHARLEY MADE LANDFALL.

YOU MAY REMEMBER THAT PLEA FROM A-B-C 7 CHIEF METEOROLOGIST JIM REIF THAT DAY.

HE CHARLEY TURNING TOWARD US --

AND HAD PUNTA GORDA AS ITS BULLEYE.

ABC7'S GEORGE SOLIS WENT BACK TO THAT CHARLOTTE COUNTY A DECADE LATER. Return to index of stories...

00:03:18 " The last thing we heard Jim Reif say Charlotte County hunker down and then the power when out."

02:12:24 "that's the historic clock on Marion Avenue"

14:34:09 "It was quite a deviated community at that time." Howard Kunik, Punta Gorda City Manager

02:13:23 " The clock is still standing but many of the businesses that stood here are demolished"

14:41:10 " That was Friday of course, Friday the 13th" Debbie Bales, Punta Gorda Ace Hardware

THE DAY HURRICANE CHARLEY MADE LANDFALL IN PUNTA GORDA TEN YEARS AGO.

nat

14:34:22 "I don't think any of us were prepared. I mean we'd been living a charmed life here in Southwest Florida for many years, we thought we were insulated." Kunik

PUNTA GORDA CITY MANAGER HOWARD KUNIK WAS IN CAPE CORAL DURING THE STORM.

CAUGHT OF GUARD LIKE MANY BY ITS SEVERITY

A FEELING THAT RESONATED WITH RESIDENTS AS MUCH AS THE DAMAGE AND DEBRIS

14:41:10 " We were sitting in our house, on the concrete floor feeling the floor shake and hearing our ears pop." Bales

DEBBIE BALES OWNS AND OPERATES THE ACE HARDWARE OF WEST MARION AVENUE

THE STORM SPARED HER HOME- BUT SHE FEARED THE WORST FOR HER BUSINESS

14:41:53 " All the stores and everything around us 360 was destroyed but our store was intact." Bales

AS YOU CAN IMAGINE HAVING A HARDWARE STORE OPEN IN THE WAKE OF DEVASTATION MEANT MANY BUSY, UNCOMFORTABLE HOURS.

14:42:29 "No power, no water, it was very very tough didn't have air conditioning for about 5 weeks" Bales

"the day Charley hit- time stood still for many in Punta Gorda. We were here as a community came together before, during, and after the devastation. But, as you can see , time has marched on and ten years later- the devastation is gone but never forgotten." George Solis

14:34:36 " It could happen again, if it does, we're more prepared for it now" Kunik

IN THE YEARS THAT FOLLOWED , THE DOWNTOWN TRANSFORMED - NEW SHOPS, HOTELS, AND A NEW CONVENTION CENTER WENT UP.

THAT'S IN ADDITION TO REBUILDING AND HOMES AND THE HISTORIC CHARLOTTE HIGH SCHOOL.

BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY , BUILT TO CODES TO WITHSTAND ANOTHER STORM LIKE CHARLEY.

PROGRESS - THAT OTHERWISE MAY HAVE NEVER EXISTED.

14:36:21 "It's tough to say to say that, but, we couldn't have accomplished this with almost a clean slate." Kunik

EVEN NOW WORK STILL CONTINUES ON IMPROVING THE CITY-

CREWS ARE IN THE FINAL PHASES OF COMPLETING THE STREET RE-BRICKING, PART OF THE CITY'S NEW FLOOD MANAGEMENT PROJECT.

14:36:55 " So, in a weird sense, in some way of form you could almost say Charley may have been the best thing to happen to this city in terms of getting where it is today? Yes, some people might say that." Kunik

DEBBIE BALES IS ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE- PROOF THAT TIME.

WEATHER TEASE-WXWALL

We're tracking a few downpours and even a few storms roaming across Southwest Florida this afternoon and into the evening, but the bulk of the rain will tend to stay over our inland areas through the evening.

Aside from a passing downpour or two, we'll see a warm and muggy conclusion to our Wednesday with a mostly clear sky through the overnight period.

As we approach the early morning hours Thursday, some downpours will develop over the Gulf and head toward the coast of Southwest Florida, so plan for the possibility for some scattered showers during the morning hours.

By the late afternoon hours on Thursday, the highest concentration of rain will likely be over interior portions of the peninsula, but a few isolated showers will still be possible closer to the coast.

Our rain chances will start to drop off a little more from Friday into the upcoming weekend, keeping lots of sun and warm temperatures in our forecast. A few passing showers will be possible early in the day, but the rain that develops during the afternoon will primarily impact areas away from the coast and deep inland.

Tropical Update

Other than a couple tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic, the tropics continue to stay very quiet. Tropical activity is not expected for the next few days, but we're getting close to the time of year when we normally see an increase in tropical development. Return to index of stories...

CHOCOLATE -- PIZZA - ICE CREAM.

DEFINITELY ITEMS MANY OF US CRAVE.

HAVE YOU THOUGHT - WHAT DO THOSE CRAVINGS REALLY MEAN?

A-B-C'S ABBIE BOUDREAU TELLS US -- THE FOODS YOU THINK YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT -- COULD ACTUALLY BE YOUR BODY TRYING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING. Return to index of stories...

CRAVING-PKG

SCRIPT:

Could your CRAVINGS be CLUES that something's EATING at

you?

Let's start with the oh-so common caffeine craving.

ABBIE BOUDREAU:

"A lot of people CRAVE caffeine. So, what does it say about

them?"

RACHEL BELLER, nutritionist

"It might say they might just need some satisfaction. Maybe

something's

going on in their life that they think that's gonna be the

pick-me-up. There's

nothing wrong with coffee, in moderation."

Beller says craving caffeine indicates a need for energy,

and a LULL could mean you're actually DEHYDRATED.

ABBIE BOUDREAU:

"Instead of coffee or sodas, all day long, what is a better

option?"

RACHEL BELLER, nutritionist

"You might just need some water to quench your thirst."

ABBIE BOUDREAU:

"Mm."

RACHEL BELLER, nutritionist, as she trades Abbie: water for

coffee

"And that might be a good trade-off."

What about if you crave ICE?

DR. JENNIFER ASHTON, ABC News Senior Medical Contributor

"It could mean you're bored; you're dehydrated or thirsty;

you just consumed a hot beverage and want to cool your

mouth

off. But there HAVE been some case reports of people

craving ice

when they have iron deficiency anemia."

And, are you quick to order mashed potatoes and mac and

cheese?

RACHEL BELLER, nutritionist

"It might mean that you're lacking some serotonin, which is

a feel-good hormone. Sometimes

a treadmill can do that - it increases serotonin and that's

why we encourage exercise."

Beller says: turn to HEALTHY comfort foods, like whole wheat

pasta and yams. Or, even try

getting a massage! Cravings for fatty food might be your brain

telling you:

don't go COLD TURKEY!

RACHEL BELLER, nutritionist

"It's better to have a little bit of good, healthy FATS

which could prevent you from

wanting the UNhealthy fats."

ABBIE BOUDREAU:

" So, THIS is my craving.

So, what does it say about me?"

RACHEL BELLER, nutritionist

"It says that you might just be lacking some fat in your

diet.

A few is fine to have. It's ok to have a little fun!"

Food for thought - in MODERATION!

For Good Morning America, Abbie Boudreau, ABC News, Los

Angeles. Return to index of stories...
