NATS - honking cars - Thursday night rally in Ferguson, MO

Overnight, a peaceful, almost festive scene on the streets of Ferguson,

Missouri.

The community rallying to demand answers -- after Michael Brown, an unarmed

black teenager, was shot and killed by a police officer last Saturday.

NATS - boom boom - Wednesday night in Ferguson, MO

It was a dramatically different scene than Wednesday night, when Ferguson

police -- looking like a small army with tanks and heavy weapons -- clashed

with demonstrators.

MOS Andre Moore, Protestor in Ferguson

"THE PEOPLE THAT'S BEING VIOLENT IS THE POLICE."

After that violence, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon ordered a change in tactics

.

He stripped local police of their authority, replacing them with the state

highway patrol.

SOT Gov. Jay Nixon

"I KNOW THAT FERGUSON WILL NOT BE DEFINED AS A COMMUNITY THAT WAS TORN APART

BY VIOLENCE."

NATS - cheering - Thursday night in Ferguson

Last night, crowds cheered the trooper in charge, Captain Ron Johnson, who

lives in the community, and marched alongside the protestors.

SOT Capt. Ron Johnson

"SO I THINK THE OLD SAYING I'VE GOT A DOG IN THIS FIGHT, I'VE GOT A BIG DOG

IN THIS FIGHT."

Other Americans sharing similar feelings.

MOS Talon Johnson, Protestor in St. Joseph, Missouri

"I MAY NOT BE THE SAME NATIONALITY AS HIM, BUT IT'S CLOSE ENOUGH TO MY HOME

AND CLOSE ENOUGH TO MY AGE."

From Chicago.to Times Square.to Howard University -- people are showing

solidarity with Michael Brown.

Authorities are still investigating exactly what happened before Brown was

shot and killed. There's been enormous pressure to identify the officer who

pulled the trigger. The Police Chief told ABC he will release that officer's

name later today.

RED TIDE BLOOM UPDATE-LLPKG

THAT'S RIGHT - FWC IS RELEASING NEW WATER TESTING RESULTS THAT MAY SHOW THE RED TIDE IN AREAS IT WASN'T PREVIOUSLY. BUT THIS IS WHAT WE DO KNOW AND THIS IS ALL NEW - RIDE TIDE IS DRIFTING SOUTHEAST STILL IN THE GULF OF MEXICO OFF PINELLAS COUNTY'S COAST.

YOU'RE LOOKING AT RESEARCHERS WITH MOTE MARINE LAB IN SARASOTA - THIS IS TWO WEEKS AGO WHEN I SPOKE WITH THEM RIGHT AS THEY WERE RELEASING AN UNDERWATER ROBOT THAT STUDIES THE BLOOM THEY NAMED "WALLY."

THEY TELL ME THEY JUST PULLED WALLY OUT OF THE WATER AND HERE'S WHAT IT SHOWS -

THE ROBOT SURVEYED ABOUT 140 MILES- IT DETECTED RIDE CONTINUING TO MOVE IN THAT SLOW, SOUTHEAST PATTERN ABOUT 20 MILES OFF PINELLAS CO.

IT'S BEING FOUND ON THE WATER'S SURFACE AND SUBMERGED IN DEEP WATER. ABOUT 60 MILES LONG, 90 MILES WIDE

THERE'S NO WAY OF TELLING RIGHT NOW WHETHER IT'S GOING TO EVENTUALLY MAKE ITS WAY TO SWFL - WE KNOW WATER RESULTS HERE HAVE DETECTED "ZERO" TRACES OF RED TIDE AND SCIENTISTS HERE AREN'T WORRIED YET.

WE DO HAVE A RARE ALGAE BLOOM CALLED LYNGBIA ON SANIBEL, FMB AND PINE ISLAND, THOUGH - THAT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO FUEL RED TIDE.

WE'LL BE LOOKING INTO FWC'S WATER RESULTS LATER TODAY AND WILL KEEP YOU UPDATED ON WHAT WE FIND.

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

PASSING DOWNPOURS

The onshore pattern that has been in place this week continues to dominate our weather today. That means a few morning downpours will wash ashore and fade as they make their way onto the coastline. With the onshore winds through the day, that sea breeze interaction this afternoon and evening will once again be aimed toward the inland areas. That's where we'll see most of the afternoon storms, with thunder, lightning and heavy rain. Highs will be in the lower 90s and will feel hotter with the humidity.

Through the weekend, the coverage of rain will go down a bit for Saturday. More a more noticeable decrease in storm coverage comes for Sunday and Monday. For those two days, coverage of rain will only be around 20%, meaning that most of the area will stay dry. Highs will stay in the lower 90s and lows in the mid and upper 70s.

There are no concerns in the tropics at this time and we don't expect any development in the next few days anywhere in the Atlantic Basin. Return to index of stories...

THE NEW SYSTEM WILL SPEED UP THE REGISTRATION PROCESS.

THIS OPTION IS ONLY OPEN TO NEW KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS --

FOR MORE INFO -- HEAD TO OUR WEBSITE --

ABC DASH 7 DOT COM.

New Technology Speeds Up Collier Kindergarten Registration Process

The Collier County Public Schools system developed and successfully launched a new Kindergarten Online Centralized Registration System for the 2014-2015 School year. The system which went online April 28th greatly speeds up the amount of time parents and kids must spend registering for school. It allows parents to complete and submit the pre-registration application for Kindergarten online. This eliminates filling out the paperwork when arriving at the student registration center. Parents still must come to one of the three registration centers to provide necessary documents. The district is registering all 3,000 new Kindergarten students through the new system.

The System is currently being used at 3 Collier locations. To see it in action please join us tomorrow at 10am!

Media Availability to see the new system in action:

Friday, August 15 at 10am

Collier County School District Headquarters

1st Floor Student Relations Office

A Communications Department Representative will meet you at the front desk and escort you to the media event.

REMINDER: KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION AVAILABLE ONLINE

Do you have a son or daughter that should start Kindergarten when the 2014-15 school year begins? If you have not already registered your child for Kindergarten, there is still time to use Collier County Public Schools' NEW Online Centralized Kindergarten Registration. This online registration is only open to new Kindergarten students and their siblings if they are not currently enrolled. Parents of soon-to-be kindergarten students can complete enrollment in three easy steps.

1. PRE-REGISTER FOR ENROLLMENT ONLINE

Visit www.collierschools.com and click on the Kindergarten Registration icon in the "What's New" area. Then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the online registration. Parents/guardians will need an email address to complete the registration.

2. GATHER REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

A list of required documents will be provided upon completion of the online pre-registration. Parents MUST have all of these documents in order to complete the enrollment process.

3. VISIT A CENTRALIZED REGISTRATION LOCATION

After completing the online pre-registration for enrollment, parents must bring all required documents to one of three convenient registration locations listed below. Parents MUST meet with a Student Relations Representative at one of the locations in order to complete the enrollment process.

NAPLES - 377-0547

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Administrative Center - 5775 Osceola Trail, Naples

How was this a problem, what event or act did she do that was disruptive or a distraction per the school board's policy?"

ACCORDING TO THE STUDENT HANDBOOK-- STUDENTS FOUND TO BE OUT OF COMPLIANCE WITH THE DRESS CODE WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO ATTEND CLASSES AND WILL INCUR AN UNEXCUSED ABSENCE.

ATTORNEY JON MCGEE DISPUTES THOSE POLICIES SAYING-- SCHOOL LEADERS NEVER HAD AN ISSUE WITH THE COLOR OF HAYLEIGH BLACK'S HAIR UNTIL NOW.

"Whether people thinks it's bright or not her hair was that same color for the last three years. Now before she even goes to her first day of school it's an issue."

They just want to be treated fairly, and that's all this is about it's about being treated fairly, and letting Hayleigh be the child, the person she is"

MCGEE SAYS BLACK'S GRANDMOTHER SERVED ON THE MUSCLE SHOALS CITY SCHOOL BOARD FOR MORE THAN 10 YEARS.

HE SAYS HER FAMILY IS WELL VERSED IN STUDENT POLICIES AND RESPECTS THE EDUCATIONAL PROCESS.

"Pam wouldn't allow her granddaughter and I don't think pam's daughter. Hayleigh's mom would allow anything that was a violation or a disruption or a distraction to the educational process"

RAY ALLEN BREAK IN-VO

POLICE ARE QUESTIONING SEVERAL PEOPLE AFTER THEY SAY THEY BROKE INTO A FORMER MIAMI HEAT PLAYER'S HOUSE.

POLICE SAY SUSPECTS BROKE INTO RAY ALLEN'S HOME EARLY THURSDAY MORNING.

THEY SAY HIS WIFE WAS ASLEEP IN HER BEDROOM WITH HER KIDS -- WHEN SHE HEARD NOISES -- AND SAW FLASHLIGHTS.

POLICE BELIEVE IT WAS A GROUP OF YOUNG PEOPLE WHO BROKE INTO THE HOUSE --

DETECTIVES SAY THE SUPECTS BELIEVED THE HOME WAS EMPTY AND WANTED TO SEE WHAT ALLEN'S HOME LOOKED LIKE.

LUCKILY, NO ONE WAS HURT AND NOTHING WAS STOLEN.

Police said Mrs. Allen shouted out "What the are you doing in my

house?" Immediately she heard one of the women say "Oh my God." Police

said the group of young adults believed to be in their early 20s then ran

out of the house laughing.

According to detectives, the suspects believed the home was empty and wanted

to see what Ray Allen's home looked like after they left a house party next

door around 2:30 a.m. Detectives said the suspects broke into the home

through a door that had a faulty lock. They found the group at another home

shortly after.

At this time no charges have been filed. Police said it is up to Mrs. Allen

to decide whether she wants to press charges.

Nothing was reported stolen from the Allen home."" Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WX WALL
