NATS -- Ferguson booms

SCENES LIKE THIS OUT OF FERGUSON, MISSOURI. HAVE CAPTURED THE COUNTRY'S ATTENTION. AND IGNITED A NATIONWIDE DEBATE.

Lonnie Whidden / Fort Myers

"I think it's a little bit too much."

FOR LONNIE WHIDDEN OF FORT MYERS. SEEING A SMALL TOWN POLICE DEPARTMENT USE MILITARY-TYPE VEHICLES AGAINST ITS OWN CITIZENS. IS JARRING.

Whidden

"They can do the regular manpower and take of this business itself, without having these vehicles and stuff. What are they gonna use it for?"

HE'S ONE OF THE MANY NOW QUESTIONING WHETHER LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENTS EVEN NEED THESE VEHICLES IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Kara Paglione / Fort Myers

"I think that it's just kind of a ploy to scare the public."

ON THURSDAY. ATTORNEY GENERAL ERIC HOLDER EXPRESSED HIS CONCERN OVER THE USE OF THESE VEHICLES IN MISSOURI -- VEHICLES THAT ARE POPPING UP IN DEPARTMENTS ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.

Trent Kelly / NBC-2/ABC-7

"This past June, the Fort Myers police department acquired this mine-resistant military vehicle for just a fraction of what it originally cost the Department of Defense."

Sgt. Sean Hoover / FMPD

"If we get an area of the city that's flooded, we can drive this guy right in there."

POLICE SAY THE M-RAP AS IT'S KNOWN. GIVES THEM THE ABILITY TO KEEP PEOPLE SAFE DURING A HOSTAGE SITUATION OR NATURAL DISASTERS.

Dave Harley / North Fort Myers

"You've got to have more than they've got."

DAVE HARLEY GREW UP IN SAINT LOUIS. AND SERVED IN VIETNAM.

Dave Harley

"The police are here to protect us, and if they think that we need this sort of equipment to make sure that we don;t get overwhelmed, I have to agree with them."

A DEBATE THAT'S SURE TO CONTINUE. REGARDLESS OF HOW THINGS ARE RESOLVED IN MISSOURI.

Jaclynn Harley / North Fort Myers

"If you have the equipment, use it." Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-PWC ~ WX WALL

FORECAST: HOT FINISH TO THE WEEKEND

A few scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue across Southwest Florida this evening, before the activity becomes increasingly isolated tonight.

Overnight lows should range from the upper 70s along the coastal areas of the region to the low and mid 70s for spots further inland from the Gulf of Mexico.

On Sunday, we will have a southern component to the wind, which means the chance of a shower will exist in the morning, espeically along the coastal communities and over the Gulf.

By the afternoon though, we will be feeling the impacts of a wedge of drier air in the mid levels of the atmosphere. That will help to keep rain chances isolated through Sunday afternoon.

With less rainfall to track across the region temperatures should warm near 94 at Fort Myers, 95 at Port Charlotte and 91 at Naples.

Looking forward to the upcoming work week, heat will be a headline factor in the forecast with temperatures a few degrees warmer than the seasonal norms for mid August expected. Rainfall coverage looks isolated Monday and Tuesday, with highs near 94 degrees each afternoon.

TROPICAL UPDATE

A tropical wave off western Africa that was showing signs of organization yesterday has been having trouble keeping it's momentum. As of now the feature remains just a collection of showers and thunderstorms. With pockets of relatively drier air over the Atlantic to contest with it appears very unlikely this wave will be able to amount to much in the coming days. Return to index of stories...
