FIRST WEATHER-WX CTR

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Our forecast will focus more on the heat and less on the storms as we go through the next few days thanks to some drier air that will work to reduce our rain chances.

We'll still get some isolated storms in spots through our Sunday, but the overall coverage will be much lower.

The storms that do form may be quite intense, producing strong winds, excessive lightning, and torrential rain.

Sunshine will dominate our Southwest Florida sky through the morning and most of the afternoon, sending temperatures quickly into the 90s by noon and then peaking in the mid 90s through the afternoon hours.

The drier and sultry weather pattern continues into the upcoming week with rain chances lower than normal and temperatures a couple degrees above normal. Highs will peak between 93-95 each day this week with heat indices as high as 105-110.

Rain chances should stay in the isolated category for much of the week, but the few storms that form may be strong and quite intense.

Tropical Update

A tropical wave off western Africa that was showing signs of organization yesterday has been having trouble keeping it's momentum. As of now the feature remains just a collection of showers and thunderstorms.

With pockets of relatively drier air over the Atlantic to contest with it appears very unlikely this wave will be able to amount to much in the coming days. Return to index of stories...

ABC7 IS KEEPING AN EYE ON THAT MASSIVE RED TIDE BLOOM IN THE GULF OF MEXICO.

ON TUESDAY--RESEARCHERS WILL TEST THE WATERS IN CHARLOTTE HARBOR AND SANIBEL CAUSEWAY.

WE'VE BEEN TRACKING THIS FOR SEVERAL WEEKS.

SAMPLES WERE FIRST DETECTED 20 MILES OFF HERNANDO COUNTY.

NOW THE LATEST REPORT FROM F-W-C SHOWS THE BLOOM IS MOVING FURTHER SOUTHEAST-- BECOMING PATCHIER AND MORE SPREAD OUT.

WILDLIFE OFFICIALS SAY WE WILL NOT SEE A MAJOR IMPACT IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA IF THE BLOOM CONTINUES TO BREAK DOWN.

COUNT ON ABC-7 TO KEEP YOU UPDATED WITH THE LATEST INFORMATION.

Mote marina and f-w-c will test for red tide in san carlos bay on tuesday.

Mote Marine Laboratory confirms they'll be performing additional red tide testing Tuesday morning well into the afternoon from Tampa Bay all the way down to Sanibel Causeway - they'll also be performing tests in Charlotte Harbor. They felt this was necessary due to the southeastern path of the bloom.

THE REASON THEY TRACK BLOOMS LIKE THIS ONE IS BECAUSE OF HEALTH CONCERNS - IT'S HARMFUL TO AQUATIC LIFE - IT'S ALREADY KILLED THOUSANDS OF FISH. AND IF IT GETS TOO CLOSE TO THE SHORE, IT CAN CAUSES BREATHING PROBLEMS FOR PEOPLE. Return to index of stories...

A TRAFFIC ALERT OUT OF LEE COUNTY.

STARTING MONDAY-- DRIVERS CAN EXPECT DELAYS OVER THE SANIBEL CAUSEWAY BRIDGE.

CREWS WILL BEGIN MINOR BRIDGE REPAIRS FROM 9 A-M UNTIL 4:30.

NO LANE CLOSURES ARE EXPECTED -

CREWS SAY THERE IS NO REASON TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT THE BRIDGE.

Fort Myers, FL, Aug. 13, 2014 - Lee County DOT contractor Seig & Ambachtscheer Inc. will perform minor bridge repairs on the Sanibel Causeway in August and September.

The work is scheduled to begin Aug. 18 and expected to be complete by Sept. 30 weather permitting.

Work is to be done weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. from the bridges' shoulders and should be accomplished with slight lane shifting. No lane closures are anticipated, although there may be short traffic disruptions during the daily set up and breakdown of the Maintenance of Traffic devices.

Variable message signs will be placed to alert drivers to the roadway Maintenance of Traffic.

The majority of these repairs will involve sealing smaller cracks and epoxy injection into larger cracks identified within the bridge superstructure and monitored in two prior inspections leading up to this repair. The work will also include the repair within the bridge superstructure of identified delaminations and spalls, which occur when small sections of concrete detach from a slab.

There is no reason for concern. The Causeway is structurally sound and remains safe. These repairs are to seal the cracks in the concrete and prevent saltwater intrusion to the structural steel, with the goal of ensuring the Causeway bridges reach their targeted 75-year life span. Questions can be directed to Lee County DOT at 533-9400. Return to index of stories...

Monday, August 18, 2014 marks the first day of school for Lee County students. The Fort Myers Police Department would like to take this time and remind all motorists to be cognizant of the increased vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic associated with this occasion.

"The first day back from summer vacation is usually hectic for traveling because a majority of parents like to see their children off on the first day of school. The extra congestion means we need to increase our awareness as motorists," according to Operations Bureau Captain Jim Mulligan.

The Fort Myers Police Department will increase patrols to ensure our youth are safe in and around bus stops, crosswalks and school zones. The additional patrols will also focus on parking issues such as illegally parking in front of hydrants, in fire lanes and on medians. Extra attention will also target the operation of school buses stopping to pick up and drop off children. "When a bus stops, traffic must also stop in both directions unless the roadway is divided by at least five feet of space," Captain Mulligan added. Return to index of stories...

SCIENTISTS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS SAY AN ELEMENT SIMILAR TO VENOM FROM SNAKES, BEES AND SCORPIONS COULD STOP CANCER CELL GROWTH.

ALTHOUGH VENOM CAN HURT ALL CELLS, THEORETICALLY, SCIENTISTS SAY THIS TECHNIQUE WILL ONLY TARGET CANCER CELLS.

WHILE THE WORK IS IN ITS EARLY STAGES, IT *HAS* SHOWN SUCCESS IN STOPPING BREAST CANCER AND MELANOMA CELL GROWTH IN LAB TESTS.

AUSTRALIAN RESEARCHERS FOUND REGULAR EXERCISE MAY CHANGE HOW WE FEEL PAIN.

THEY FOUND THE LONGER ONE WORKS OUT, THE MORE PAIN WE CAN TOLERATE.

SCIENTISTS TESTED THE PAIN THRESHOLD OF VOLUNTEERS -- THEY HAD ONE GROUP DO EXERCISE, AND THE OTHER DID NOT.

SIX-WEEKS LATER, THEY WERE RE-TESTED.

THOSE WHO EXERCISED STILL FELT PAIN, BUT THEIR TOLERANCE FOR PAIN HAD INCREASED.

IT'S BACK-TO-SCHOOL TIME, AND STUDENTS MAY BRING HOME MORE THAN JUST HOMEWORK.
