FERGUSON LATEST-PKG

Overnight, the streets of Ferguson again looked like a war zone.

The Missouri National Guard assisted state and local police.

But there was little order.

Angry demonstrators lobbed molotov cocktails and other objects. Police fired

back with tear gas.

NATS

There were multiple arrests.

Captain Ron Johnson-SOT-

I WANT TO ENCOURAGE THE GOOD PEOPLE OF THIS AREA TO COME OUT AND PROTEST

TOMORROW DURING THE DAY TIME HOURS. MAKE YOUR VOICES HEARD WHEN YOU CAN BE

SEEN, AND WHERE YOU'RE NOT THE COVER FOR VIOLENT AGITATORS.

At the heart of the unrest -- the death of this 18 year old Michael Brown.

Officer Darren Wilson shot and killed the unarmed teen.

Preliminary autopsy results confirm Brown was shot multiple times, including

twice in the head.

SOT:

AT LEAST SIX SHOTS, MAY MORE, BUT AT LEAST SIX.

The medical examiner hired by Brown's family says when Officer Wilson opened

fired the teen was either charging forward or raising his hand to surrender

.

BADEN SOT:

THE MUZZLE COULD HAVE BEEN ONE OR TWO FEET AWAY AT LEAST. COULD BE FUTHER

AWAY.

Police say Brown approached Officer Wilson's car looking for a fight.

Chief Col. Jon Belmar-SOT-

IT IS OUR UNDERSTANDING AT THIS POINT IN THE INVESTIGATION THAT WITHIN THE

POLICE CAR THERE WAS A STRUGGLE OVER THE OFFICER'S WEAPON.

Exactly what happened in that moment when Brown and the officer came face to

face will be key to whether Officer Wilson is charged. A grand jury could

hear evidence as soon as Wednesday.

O/C Close:

There is no sign Ferguson will be returning to normal any time soon. The

start of school has been cancelled, there's a no fly zone over the city and

the National Guard is not going anywhere. TB, ABC News, Ferguson, Mo. Return to index of stories...

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Hot & Humid Again Today

Hot & humid conditions will be the main focus again Tuesday Afternoon.

High temperatures soaring above the average by quite a few degrees.

Most areas reach into the mid 90s with feel like temperatures well into triple digits.

Hydration will be key for those who have to spend prolonged periods outdoors.

With drier air in place, rain chances stay pretty slim through the day area wide. However, isolated shower or two will be possible farther inland by late afternoon.

We stay hot, humid and dry again Wednesday. Slightly cooler temperatures and better rain chances return in time for the second half of the work week. Return to index of stories...

A DETROIT READING PROGRAM IS GETTING THE HELP OF MANS BEST FRIEND.

ITS PART OF THE READER DOG PROGRAM AT A PUBLIC LIBRARY IN MICHIGAN.

HERES HOW IT WORKS -

ANY STUDENT FROM K THROUGH FIFTH GRADE CAN COME IN AND READ TO A DOG.

THE REASON?

SOME KIDS FIND IT EASIER TO READ OUTLOUD WITH A PET- WHO DOESN'T JUDGE OR MAKE FUN. VS. IN THE CLASSROOM.

IT MAKES THE KIDS BETTER READERS

A DETROIT PROGRAM PAIRS YOUNG KIDS WITH A FOUR LEGGED READING BUDDY IN THE HOPES THAT THEY'LL GAIN CONFIDENCE IN THEIR READING SKILLS.

EVROD CASSIMY HAS THE DETAILS.

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--

SEVEN-YEAR-OLD COLLIN SMITH IS SHARPENING HIS READING SKILLS BY READING OUT LOUD TO HIS BEST FRIEND -- MAN'S BEST FRIEND TO BE EXACT.

IT'S PART OF THE READER DOG PROGRAM AT GROSSE POINTE PUBLIC LIBRARIES. ANY STUDENT IN KINDERGARTEN THROUGH FIFTH-GRADE PRACTICE READING TO DOGS. THE REASON WHY IS SIMPLE, IT'S LESS EMBARRASSING THAN READING OUT LOUD ON THE CLASSROOM WHILE THEY'RE STILL LEARNING HOW.

"It's also an environment that's away from the school environment, so if they're used to being frustrated in the school by reading, it's a new space and a new way to try."

"It helps me get smarter."

COLLIN AND HIS 5-YEAR-OLD BROTHER, RONAN, ENJOY READING TO THEIR FURRY FRIENDS.

"Dogs are very good listeners and dogs are very friendly."

THE BOYS HAVE THEIR OWN DOG AT HOME, BUT THESE ARE SPECIAL THERAPY DOGS AT THE LIBRARY. THEY'RE BETTER TRAINED AND CALMER THAN YOUR TYPICAL HOUSE PET.

"They're very tame, quiet, calm. I don't believe a cat would sit and listen to you read, nor would a bird probably, so dogs make sense."

THE READER DOG PROGRAM IS NOW IN IT'S 11TH YEAR AND REALLY TAKING OFF.

EACH THERAPY DOG IS ACCOMPANIED BY IT'S HANDLER.

THE CHILD READER CAN BRING THEIR OWN BOOK OR READ ONE FROM THE LIBRARY FOR A 30-MINUTE PERIOD AND THE DOGS SURE DO ENJOY STORYTIME.

"The dogs absolutely know what's going on. When they get here, they're excited to come. They love to see all the people, whether it's staff or the kids, they're super happy to be here and they just love all the attention."

RESULTS SHOW THAT AS THESE STUDENTS HEAD BACK TO SCHOOL, THEY'RE MORE CONFIDENT IN THEIR READING SKILLS AND WILLING TO PARTICIPATE IN CLASS. AND, IT HELPS MAKE READING FUN. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WX WALL
