RECORD HIGHS POSSIBLE TODAY

It is yet another very warm day across Southwest Florida, and temps will continue to climb in the afternoon hours. Highs will push into the mid 90s in many areas today, with head indices well above 100 for several hours this afternoon.

The record high at Page Field is 96 and we may tie or break the record.

Scattered showers and storms will also develop in the afternoon hours, and some of these storms may be strong in the mid to late afternoon time frame.

We'll have a few more storms in the forecast as we head toward the weekend. By Sunday, there will be scattered afternoon storms. As we get into next week, there will be plenty of moisture available to give much higher rain chances starting on Monday and continuing through midweek. With more cloud cover and rain, highs will reach only into the upper 80s to low 90s next week.

TROPICAL UPDATE

We are still keeping an eye on a large tropical wave near the Lesser Antilles. The system is still loosely organized, but has a 50% chance for development through the next 1-2 days.

The National Hurricane Center is giving the system a 70% chance of development over the next 5 days. This system will move across the Lesser Antilles and enter the Caribbean Sea over the next few days.

At this point, it is too early to tell whether this system will have an impact on our weather here in Florida. We will keep you updated on-air and online as we continue to track this system. Elsewhere, no major activity is expected over the next 5 days. Return to index of stories...

IN THE EARLY, EARLY DAYS, WE WERE WEVU.

2:45:00 "We're still the one! WEVU, Channel 26, Naples Fort Myers!"

SHOWING SOAP OPERAS.

HIT ABC SHOWS.

00:19 "Then on the Love Boat…"

AND THIS…

3:08:00 "Welcome to Dialing for Dollars, and all that kind of stuff."

GARY FIRESTONE WAS OUR STATION'S FIRST LOCAL STAR.

1:52:58:00 "The ad-libbing and fun I had doing that show was incomparable."

IN BETWEEN THE AFTERNOON MOVIE, GARY HOSTED "DIALING FOR DOLLARS."

6:10:00 'bashes spinner' - "One day when I'm not here, that's going to work right."

HE'D SPIN THE WHEEL TO GET WHAT THEY CALLED 'THAT DAY'S COUNT.'

THEN HE'D PICK A RANDOM PHONE NUMBER FROM A BIN AND CALL THEM.

25:47:00 "We're calling the home of Richard Milton."

IF THEY ANSWERED, GARY WOULD ASK A QUESTION.

25:55:00 "This is Gary Firestone on Channel 26, Dialing for Dollars, are you watching the show today?"

AND DO YOU KNOW THE COUNT.

NATURALLY, SOME DIDN'T.

THEY SOON GAVE WAY TO MORE SERIOUS NEWS.

1:05:00 "We'll have a report on drug confiscations, major ones, in Collier and Lee County."

THE WEVU NEWSROOMS IN BONITA WOULD CHANGE --

BUT EVENTUALLY WE WOULD SETTLE INTO TTHIS BUILDING AT BONITA BAY.

FROM THERE, OUR BEHIND-THE-SCENES TEAM, OUR CREWS IN THE FIELD AND ANCHORS ON THE DESK BROUGHT YOU THE NEWS.

DO YOU REMEMBER THE FACES OF THE LATE 70S, THE 80S, THE EARLY 90S?

FROM BLACK-AND-WHITE…

FROM HERE IN COLOR…

TO HERE IN SADNESS.

2:17:03:00 "Because a change was coming, perhaps the biggest change in our company's history. The station said goodbye to Bonita, WEVU, and hello to Fort Myers, and new call letters, WZVN."

WATERMAN BROADCASTING, WHICH OWNS NBC2, TOOK OVER RUNNING ABC7 IN THE MID-90S --

AN AGREEMENT WITH OUR NEW OWNER, LARA KUNKLER AND MONTCLAIR COMMUNICATIONS.

1:22:19:00 "It's a good time to look back at who you've been and what you've done."

THIS IS WHAT WE'VE DONE.

'nats of show from 1996'

WE DELIVERED THE NEWS ABOUT SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.

"This is ABC7 news at 6 with Harry Horn and Emily Norman…"

AND IF YOU LIVED HERE THEN, YOU PROBABLY STILL NOW REMEMBER SOME OF THE FACES.

SOME ARE STILL HERE.
