--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--

FOR ALMOST TWO YEARS, THE PARENTS OF JAMES FOLEY HOPED HE WOULD SOME DAY BE RELEASED.

"You know from the videos that his last words were, 'I wish I had more time to see my family.'"

"He was strong, courageous, loving to the end. He was just a hero."

".the world is shaped by people like Jim Foley and the overwhelming majority of humanity who are appalled by those who killed him."

OFFICIALS SAY U-S SPECIAL OPS -- FROM UNITS LIKE DELTA FORCE AND NAVY SEAL TEAM SIX -- WENT INTO SYRIA, THIS SUMMER, TRYING TO RESCUE FOLEY AND OTHER HOSTAGES HELD CAPTIVE BY MILITANTS.

.BUT WHEN THEY ARRIVED AT THEIR TARGET, THE HOSTAGES WEREN'T THERE.

FOLEY'S PARENTS SAY THEY RECEIVED AN E-MAIL FROM ISIS, LAST WEEK, TELLING THEM THEIR SON WOULD DIE. THEY COULDN'T DO ANYTHING TO STOP HIS BEHEADING, BUT THEY HOPE OTHERS CAN STILL BE SAVED.

"What we've been doing to date has not been enough."

"It wasn't enough, and yes, they were trying."

"It didn't save Jimmy. We don't know if it's going to save Steven or any of the other people."

AN ORGANIZATION CALLED THE COMMITTEE TO PROTECT JOURNALISTS ESTIMATES ABOUT 20 JOURNALISTS ARE STILL MISSING IN SYRIA -- MANY OF THEM HELD BY ISIS AFTER BEING KIDNAPPED.THEIR LIVES VERY MUCH AT RISK.

YOUR 911 CALLS COULD BE GETTING RESPONDED TO QUICKER.

IF YOU LIVE IN NAPLES.

CITY LEADERS HAVE APPROVED A NEW DISPATCH SYSTEM.

9-1-1 CALLS THAT COME THROUGH DISPATCH WILL AUTOMATICALLY GO TO THE CLOSEST FIRST RESPONDERS.

RIGHT NOW -- THEY GO THROUGH A SLOWER PROCESS.

THE I-T EXPERT AT THE SHERIFFS OFFICE EXPLAINED TO US HOW IT WILL WORK.

9-1-1 RESPONSE TIMES MAY SOON BE MUCH QUICKER IN COLLIER COUNTY.

NAPLES JUST VOTED TO USE THE COUNTY'S PROPOSED "COMPUTER-AIDED DISPATCH SYSTEM."

IT INSTANTLY FINDS WHAT UNIT IS CLOSEST TO THE CALLER AND DISPATCHES THEM.

RIGHT NOW THEY HAVE TO WORK OUT THOSE DETAILS OVER THE RADIO.

THIS IS MUCH FASTER.

JUST POLICE. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

HOT AND HUMID WITH ISOLATED STORMS

It is a warm morning with temperatures starting in the mid 70s to lower 80s across Southwest Florida. Another hot day is in store as temperatures will climb into the mid 90s and the head index values will be more that 100 degrees. Take breaks, find shade and drink lots of water if you have outdoor plans today.

As far as rain chances today; there will be a few downpours through the afternoon and early evening time frame. With that being said, there will be many places that miss out on that rain. The few places that do get the rain will get heavy thunderstorm activity.

We'll have a few more storms in the forecast as we head toward the weekend. By Sunday, there will be scattered afternoon storms. As we get into next week, there will be plenty of moisture available to give much higher rain chances starting on Monday and continuing through midweek. With more cloud cover and rain, highs will reach only into the upper 80s to low 90s next week.

TROPICAL UPDATE

We are still keeping an eye on a large tropical wave near the Lesser Antilles. The system is still loosely organized, but has a 50% chance for development through the next 1-2 days.

The National Hurricane Center is giving the system a 70% chance of development over the next 5 days. This system will move across the Lesser Antilles and enter the Caribbean Sea over the next few days.

At this point, it is too early to tell whether this system will have an impact on our weather here in Florida. We will keep you updated on-air and online as we continue to track this system. Elsewhere, no major activity is expected over the next 5 days.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...

"I really was not sure what happened, until like two or three seconds afterwards and I was like expletive I think I just got hit by lightning."

STEPHANIE REY SAYS SHE WAS TAKING VIDEO OF THE STORM. HER DAUGHTER C.C. WAS AS WELL WHEN THE SKY LIT UP.

"I said thank you Lord about 75 times in the last two hours."

"This image here is a 24 hour summary of the lightning activity."

INSIDE THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE IN SPOKANE. FORECASTERS ARE WORKING TO WARN YOU OF ANY STORMS.

"This is a system that we're expecting to come down on Friday."

METEOROLOGIST GREG KOCH SAYS IN THE LAST 24-HOURS THEY RECORDED MORE THAN 16-HUNDRED LIGHTNING STRIKES IN NORTH IDAHO AND EASTERN WASHINGTON.

"We like to just keep it simple if you can see lightning or if you can hear thunder you're close enough to be in danger."

HE SAYS IT'S BEST TO GET INDOORS OR INSIDE YOUR CAR WHEN SEVERE WEATHER APPROACHES.

BUT MANY OF US LIKE TO GO HIKING, FISHING, AND OTHER THINGS IN THE INLAND NORTHWEST. KOCH SAYS FIND A LYING SPOT AWAY FROM ANY TREES.

"Keep these lightning safety tips in mind, and don't take any chances out there, it's not worth it."

FORECAST-WX WALL
