Forecast: Major changes coming to Southwest Florida's weather

The new year will usher in a new weather pattern over Southwest Florida that will persist through at least next weekend. This pattern means business; as our skies will cloud up, rain will become possible, the wind will pick up and temperatures will drop in a big way as early as New Year's Day Monday.

Let's start with tonight though. Luckily, the storm system bringing the weather changes is far enough away from our area that our New Year's Eve plans will have nice conditions. If you're headed to Naples Pier for the fireworks at 7:30 tonight, the balloon drop at 9 p.m. in downtown Fort Myers, or the midnight ball drop in the River District you can expect sky conditions to range from mostly clear to partly cloudy. Temperatures are forecast to be in the low 60s by 7 and 8 p.m., with temperatures around 60 at the stroke of midnight. If your not a fan of cooler weather, be sure to have a sweater or sweatshirt on hand of any outdoor parties.

Related story: New Year's Eve celebrations in Southwest Florida

We'll start to notice changes in our weather after midnight on Monday morning. That's when clouds will be on the increase, along with the chance for some showers that will stay in the forecast through Monday. Though rain totals will likely be less than 1" on Monday, passing nuisance showers can be expected as cooler air in the afternoon keeps highs below average for the first day of January. Our high on Monday is forecast to hit just 68 degrees, with overnight lows on Monday falling into the low 50s in Lee and Collier Counties, with 40s in Charlotte and inland counties.

The system bringing the changing weather on Monday will influence our forecast on Tuesday and Wednesday as well. This means that each day will feature cloudy to at times overcast conditions with mid-day highs in the low 60s. The wind will be breezy, with pesky showers in the region as well.

The second phase of this storm system will develop by Thursday and Friday. What will happen is that the storm system will move away from us, but in doing so pull down even colder air into South Florida. Given the way the forecast looks right now, highs on Thursday and Friday can be expected to only top out around 60 degrees, with regionwide overnight low temperatures in the 40s.

Boating Forecast

Boating is not advised on New Year's Day Monday. Winds will begin the day hailing from the southwest, but turn from the northwest in the afternoon as a result of the storm system moving in. The wind speed is likely to increase as the day goes on, picking up to 15-20 knots by afternoon. Inland waters are expected to by choppy.

With windy weather expected on Tuesday and Wednesday, please use caution if trying to boat for the next several days. Return to index of stories...

SUNRISE, Fla. - Someone set off fireworks inside Sawgrass Mills in Sunrise, causing shoppers to briefly flee the shopping mall, police said.

Despite initial reports on social media of a shooting, the Sunrise Police Department said that no shots were fired and no one was hurt. The mall reopened less than an hour after the scare.

Police said they found the remains of the firework inside the mall. Officers are treating this as a suspicious incident, and they are looking for the person who set off the fireworks, police said.

Several shoppers posted on Twitter, believing the noises were gunshots. A video posted on Twitter by shopper Richard Burke shows people running from the mall, thinking shots had been fired.

Some shoppers said on Twitter that they hid inside store rooms.

A similar incident happened at the Aventura Mall on Dec. 23. The mall was evacuated after reports of a shooting, and police shut down the shopping center as officers searched the mall.

A DOG MISSING FROM NEW MEXICO WAS FOUND ALMOST A YEAR LATER IN MISSOURI!

A WOMAN SAYS HER BOYFRIEND CALLED AND FOUND A HUSKY IN THEIR BACKYARD ON CHRISTMAS DAY.

SHE SAYS SHE'S HAPPY HE GOT TO VISIT SINCE THEIR OTHER DOG JUST PASSED AWAY.

A NEW MEXICO FAMILY IS GETTING REUNITED WITH THEIR DOG THAT DISAPPEARED ALMOST A YEAR AGO.

THE DOG TRAVELED ALL THE WAY TO MISSOURI!

MARCUS OFFICER HAS THE STORY.

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--

nats

JAMIE BERGMAN HAS A DEEP LOVE FOR HUSKIES.

SO IT DIDN'T TAKE LONG FOR HER TO GET ATTACHED TO KODA AFTER HE APPEARED IN HER BACKYARD ON CHRISTMAS DAY.

Jamie Bergman/Found Koda:

"So I get a call from my boyfriend and he says 'funny story'. He had let out our younger husky, Aspen, out to go to the bathroom in the backyard and he said when he went to get her back inside that there was another husky in our yard. He said he brought it in and he was skinny and so wet that the whole back half of him was covered in ice."

AFTER A BATH AND SOME FOOD, KODA WAS TAKEN TO THE VET TO BE SCANNED FOR A MICROCHIP.

IT WAS THEN THAT JAMIE FOUND OUT THAT THIS HUSKY WAS A LONG WAY FROM HOME.

Jamie Bergman/Found Koda:

"I finally get a hold of the owners and they can't believe it. They are really confused, first of all, about who I am, how I have their number, and how I have their dog. So we get to talking and I find out that they are from New Mexico and that's where he is from and that he has been missing for almost a year."

HOW KODA MANAGED TO MAKE IT TO MISSOURI IS A MYSTERY BUT ONE JAMIE BELIEVES HAS TO DO MORE WITH FATE THAN LUCK.

Jamie Bergman/Found Koda:

"The fact that we had a husky pass away the first of December, it makes me think did she have something to do with it? Did she send this dog to us because he needed help? How did he jump the fence in my yard? How? It's so crazy."

KODA WILL HEAD BACK TO HIS HOME IN NEW MEXICO NEXT MONTH.

BUT HIS ODD JOURNEY, AND BRIEF VISIT WITH JAMIE, SERVED AS A KIND OF CHRISTMAS MIRACLE.

MAKING JAMIE WONDER: WHO SAVED WHO?

Jamie Bergman/Found Koda:

"He came at the right time and it all just kind of worked out because he's really helping us heal from the loss of our other dog and it's nice to be able to have him here throughout the holidays when it's always rough. And we have this other dog that we can focus on and love and he's giving us back a little bit also. It's really cool."

LESS THAN 6 HOURS REMAINING IN 2017. IT WAS A PRETTY GOOD YEAR FOR OUR LOCAL SPORTS TEAMS. HERE IS A LOOK BACK AT SWFL'S 2017 SPORTS YEAR IN REVIEW. Return to index of stories...

2017 SPORTS WRAP PACK-PKG TOPS

What a year of sports it's been here in SWFL.

We began the year with the FGCU basketball teams winning a pair of A Sun Championships that lead to NCAA Tournament Births. then were pleasantly surprised to hear that both of their leaders will be hanging around. Dooley sot.

The Baseball squad made history of their own. winning the A sun and making their first ever tournament appearance behind a record setting season from the programs all time homerun leader!

Next up Fort Myers won a pair of championships. no I am not talking about the basketball team going back to back. they did. but the softball team won too.

Back to back on a diamond. Canterbury would know a thing or two about that. won of those 2 time state champs. drafted by the padres. 4 others. headed d1.

The Everglades with a never say die attitude rallied winning a thrilling 7 game playoff series. and reminded us even tough hockey guys have a warm fuzzy side.

Speaking of giving back. the beginning of football season was a mess. no not the play. the individual play was great. but the hurricane messed up the early goings of the season. the Immokalee Indians were there to help their communities get back on their feet

After the craziness of the storm had subsided team started to hit their groove North Fort Myers and undefeated regular-season same with Immokalee.

After the wildest regular season anyone had ever seen. 12 SWFL teams advanced to the state playoffs. and we saw some even more Wild playoff games. in the end Naples and Immokalee would represent SWFL in the state semi finals. both did us proud but came up just short

Here's hoping 2018 brings us more great sports memories and hopefully a couple more championships Return to index of stories...
