FIRST WEATHER-WX CTR

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Today will be one of the warmest days before 2018 brings colder weather our way. A brisk start to the morning here with a few areas of patchy fog. We will trade that out for mostly sunny skies this afternoon and our high temperatures will slowly creep up into the low 70s. Conditions will stay rain-free for today with mainly clear skies this evening. If your New Year's Eve celebrations take you outdoors, plan a warm jacket as temperatures drop into the upper 50s tonight.

The new year will bring a cold front along with it. We will be dry and cool for the morning hours before showers start to work in along with the front later in the evening. Highs will make it up into the low 70s.

Temperatures will take a tumble as we head into the week with highs only making it up into the low 60s with breezy conditions. You'll want a warm coat in the mornings as the kids head back to school with morning temperatures in the low 50s over the next several days. Rain showers will stick around for Tuesday and Wednesday but don't expect a washout.

As we get closer to next weekend, temperatures continue to dip as we have the chance to see a couple mornings in the low to mid 40s! Return to index of stories...

New Year’s Eve fireworks at Gather end 2017 with a bang

Tasty holiday treats all month at Tarpon Point Marina’s new gastrobar

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Enjoying fireworks over the Caloosahatchee where it meets the Gulf is a fitting way to see 2017 give way to bigger and better things in the year to come, and Gather offers a great place to do it. On Sunday, Dec. 31, arrive by boat or car – or plan to stay the night at the beautiful Westin hotel at Tarpon Point Marina – for drink specials, bottle service, food and fireworks. DJ German Garcia pumps up the beat starting at 8 p.m. Champagne and canapés will be served from 11 p.m. to midnight.

In the meantime, mark your calendars for culinary and cocktail adventures all month long. Tarpon Point’s cool new waterfront gastrobar is rolling out plenty of treats in time for the holiday season.

On Thursday, Dec. 21, join your friends at the monthly Sundown Stroll at the Tarpon Point Marina Shops between 4:30 and 8 p.m. The theme is “Eat, drink and be festive,” featuring lots of holiday treats including arts and crafts for the kids, face painting and a snow machine. Don your choicest threads for the ugly sweater contest, enjoy drinks, food and music. Take pictures with Mrs. Claus and learn about this month’s charity, Florida Runs for the Fallen.

Every Friday, DJ German returns to the turntable to lay down a South Beach club vibe from 8 p.m. to midnight. One Saturday a month, he’ll bring back “Mister Trombone” Wayne Perry with his smooth brand of upbeat funk and the tribal-infused hand percussion stylings of Ryan Anthony. Admission is free to sample this potion of power, spontaneity and funk while indulging in the craft cocktails and nibbles menu offerings that have garnered Gather a devoted crowd since its recent opening in October.

Every Sunday from 6 – 10 p.m. is Industry Sunday. Restaurant and hospitality folks will get a small bite from the Nibbles menu with any drink order. Night owls enjoy Reverse Happy Hour 10 p.m.-midnight on Friday and Saturday and then can sleep in because on Sundays, breakfast is served until 3 p.m. Regular happy hour is every Tuesday through Friday from 2 to 6 p.m., offering $5 craft beer, $5 house wine, $5 call liquors and $8 craft cocktails. Wine Wednesday offers half price on bottles $50 and under starting at 4 p.m.

Now is the time to plan your Christmas Eve dinner at Gather. So that Gather’s staff may spend the holiday with their families, last seating availability will be between 4:30-5 p.m., the perfect time to take in that famous Southwest Florida sunset. Gather is closed on Christmas Day.

Gather is the place to do just that – come together with friends, relatives and out-of-town guests or make new friends united in food, drink and tasty tunes. It offers breakfast, lunch, dinner, a full bar and even picnic lunches for boaters.

Gather has become popular for its inventive casual cuisine, craft cocktails and nibbles such as the crispy duck wings with tropical fruit-chipotle glaze, cumin grilled lamb lollipop with yogurt eggplant tzatziki, charcuterie, seared octopus, spicy lime and cilantro shrimp or Marta’s beef empanadas. Daily features and a full dinner menu are also served, including the popular lamb meatball spaghetti, the roasted porcini risotto, smoked salmon tartine and sous vide veal chop.

Updates on all upcoming events are available at www.facebook.com/gathercape and the menu and hours are available at www.gathercape.com.

YEAR END TAX STRATEGIES-VIDBOX

IT'S ALMOST A NEW YEAR AND THAT MEANS ITS TAX TIME.

FINANCIAL EXPERTS SUGGEST -- WHEN DOING YOUR TAXES MAKE SURE YOU OFFSET SHORT-TERM GAINS AND LOSSES.

ALSO WATCH YOUR DISTRIBUTIONS FROM MUTUAL FUNDS -- THEY TEND TO MAKE LARGER DISTRIBUTIONS AROUND THE END OF THE YEAR, AND THAT COULD THROW OFF YOUR OVERALL CAPITAL GAINS.

AND DON'T OVERLOOK CHARITABLE DONATIONS -- YOU'LL WANT TO MAKE THOSE BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR.

WITH THE YEAR WINDING DOWN IT'S TIME FOR TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT TAX MOVES YOU MAY NEED TO MAKE.

THESE YEAR-END STRATEGIES COULD END UP HAVING A POSITIVE AFFECT ON YOUR TAX BILL COME APRIL.

C-N-B-C DOT-COM OUTLINED WHAT STEPS TO TAKE, STARTING WITH A LOOK AT ANY GAINS YOU MAY HAVE HAD DURING THE YEAR.

SOME OF THE GAIN MIGHT BE OFFSET WITH CAPITAL LOSSES IN YOUR PORTFOLIO.

BUT KEEP IN MIND, YOU WANT TO OFFSET A SHORT-TERM GAIN WITH A SHORT TERM LOSS AND A LONG TERM GAIN WITH A LONG-TERM LOSS.

AND SPEAKING OF CAPITAL GAINS -- WATCH THE DISTRIBUTIONS FROM MUTUAL FUNDS.

THEY TEND TO MAKE LARGER DISTRIBUTIONS AROUND THE END OF THE YEAR, AND THAT COULD THROW OFF YOUR OVERALL CAPITAL GAINS SITUATION.

AND IT'S BEST NOT TO INVEST JUST BEFORE A DISTRIBUTION DATE.

YOU'D BE GETTING A DISTRIBUTION FOR GAINS REALIZED BEFORE YOU EVEN OWNED THE FUND.

AND DON'T OVERLOOK CHARITABLE DONATIONS.

YOU'LL WANT TO MAKE THOSE BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR.

SOME RECOMMEND USING APPRECIATED PROPERTY RATHER THAN CASH.

THE STRATEGY IS SEEN AS A TAX-SAVING METHOD.

IT ALLOWS YOU TO TAKE A DEDUCTION FOR THE FULL VALUE OF THE PROPERTY WITHOUT INCURRING A TAXABLE GAIN. Return to index of stories...

ON THE IMPEACHMENT OF THEN-SOUTH KOREAN PRESIDENT PARK GEUN-HYE.

WHEN HIS 4-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER, MARION, CAME GLEEFULLY DANCING IN, WITH HER LITTLE BROTHER IN TOW

KELLY TRIED HIS BEST TO CONTINUE, BUT THE DAMAGE WAS DONE -- HIS KIDS -- AND WIFE TRYING TO SAVE THE DAY -- HAD STOLEN THE SHOW

INEVITABLY, THE INTERVIEW AND THE FAMILY WENT VIRAL, AND SOON MARION WAS THE ONE BEING INTERVIEWED.

AND FINALLY, AMIDST THE CHAOS OF 2017, THERE WAS ONE EVENT THAT SEEMED TO STOP EVERYTHING.

IF ONLY FOR A MOMENT.

THE SOLAR ECLIPSE.

FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS IN AUGUST, THE LOOMING CELESTIAL EVENT BASICALLY ECLIPSED ALL OTHER NEWS

IT HAD BEEN 99 YEARS SINCE A TOTAL ECLIPSE MADE ITS WAY ACROSS THE U-S, UNOBSTRUCTED

SO FOLKS OF ALL WALKS OF LIFE MADE PLANS, SOME TRAVELING GREAT DISTANCES, TO TAKE IN THE MOMENT

SOME TOOK THE PROPER PRECAUTIONS

OTHERS, NOT SO MUCH

ONCE IT WAS OVER, WE WERE LEFT WITH SOME TRULY STAGGERING IMAGES OF THE POWER OF NATURE.

INCLUDING QUITE POSSIBLY THE GREATEST PHOTO EVER CAPTURED ON.

OH COME ON, BUS! GET OUT OF THE WAY! Return to index of stories...

DRONES DELIVER BLOOD-VO AT TOUCH

A CALIFORNIA CITY COULD BE THE FIRST IN THE U-S TO USE DRONES.

TO DELIVER BLOOD.

DRONES ARE ALREADY BEING USED IN SWITZERLAND TO DELIVER BLOOD.

LETS GET YOU MORE ON HOW DELIVERING BLOOD CAN BE DONE WITH JUST A TOUCH OF A BUTTON. Return to index of stories...

DRONES DELIVER BLOOD-PKG

DRONES LIKE THIS ARE ALREADY BEING USED IN SWITZERLAND TO DELIVER BLOOD FROM ONE MEDICAL FACILITY TO ANOTHER.

THE COMPANY BEHIND IT IS MATTERNET, IN MENLO PARK.

IT'S VIDEO SHOWS HOW BLOOD OR MEDICAL SAMPLES CAN BE PUT INTO A BOX, AND WITH A PUSH OF A BUTTON. FLOWN AUTONOMOUSLY BY A DRONE.

STANFORD BLOOD CENTER WANTS TO DO THE SAME.

Tho Pham, Medical Director, Stanford Blood Center: "We'll use a drone to deliver blood from Stanford Blood Center about 3.5 miles to Stanford Hospital down the road."

Janine De La Vega Reporting: "Doctors say it can take 30 minutes to one hour to transport blood from the blood center to here at Stanford Hospital. Using a drone to deliver, would take 10 minutes."

THE DELIVERY WOULD BE DROPPED AT A RECEIVING STATION THAT LOOKS LIKE THIS.

IT WOULD BE LOCATED IN A HOSPITAL PARKING LOT OR AREA CONVENIENT FOR MEDICAL STAFF TO ACCESS.

Andreas Rappopoulous, Matternet CEO: "With a system like this, you're able to save tremendous amount of time and generally reduce waste throughout the hospital system."

THE FAA RECENTLY ANNOUNCED IT WILL SELECT A SMALL NUMBER OF PILOT PROJECTS THAT WOULD HELP THE INTEGRATION OF DRONES.

PALO ALTO'S CITY MANAGER SAYS THEY'VE SUBMITTED THEIR APPLICATION AND ARE EXCITED THE PILOT PROGRAM COULD POTENTIALLY HAPPEN IN WHAT IS CONSIDERED THE BIRTHPLACE OF SILICON VALLEY.

James Keene, City Manager, Palo Alto-CA: "We saw it as a really opportune moment for us to be in potentially on the front end of developing policies that could affect cities in the future."

DOCTORS SAY IF APPROVED, THE DRONES WOULD BE USED TO FLY BLOOD IN EMERGENCIES, WHERE TIME IS CRITICAL, AND THEY DON'T HAVE ENOUGH STAFF TO TRANSPORT SUPPLIES QUICKLY.

STANFORD IS HOPEFUL THE PROJECT IS CHOSEN. Return to index of stories...
