FIRST WEATHER-WX CTR

We are opening 2018 with a big change in the overall weather pattern around Southwest Florida, one that will keep us chilly for much of the week ahead.

Expect a cloudy morning with temperatures in the 50s. Showers from an approaching cold front will begin to impact coastal Charlotte and Lee counties from mid to late morning. Rain is expected to be scattered and light, with less than half an inch today. The best chance of rain today overall will be in the early afternoon.

Temperatures will not rise very much as a result of the clouds and the front passing through our area in the afternoon. Highs will be in the upper 60s with a few spots in Collier and Hendry counties reaching around 70 midday.

Gusty winds behind the front will be a significant issue for boaters. Expect choppy conditions with 3 to 4 foot waves in the Gulf by the late afternoon with winds up to 20 knots.

Cloudy and windy weather sticks around through Wednesday as a storm system forms off the east coast of Florida. There's a chance for some heavier rain on Wednesday, but overall the next three days we will just see scattered light showers with rain totals at less than an inch.

This storm off the eastern coast will help bring down much cooler and drier air behind it starting Wednesday. Skies will clear and temperatures will drop to the 40s along the coast and 30s inland for lows Thursday through Sunday. Highs during this period will only be in the low to mid 60s in the afternoons. This is about as winter-like as it gets for Southwest Florida. After today, we won't see 70s again until the end of next weekend. Return to index of stories...
