CODY ~ DAY PLANNER-WX CTR

Good morning, Southwest Florida!

Better bundle up! It's a chilly, windy and cloudy start to the morning with temperatures starting out in the 40s.

Factor in a strong northerly windy, and it feels as cold as the 30s for parts of Southwest Florida.

The wind will play a major part in our weather today as well as the next couple of days. Our wind will be northerly today from 15-20 mph with gusts up to 25 mph, which will make the air feel several degrees below the actual temperature all day.

Aside from the wind chill aspect of our weather, don't expect much of a warm up, even later this afternoon.

Like Monday, we'll have lots of clouds blanketing our sky today, which will slow down the warming process dramatically.

Also, the strong northerly breeze will keep the chilly air flowing into Southwest Florida.

Tonight, expect the cloudy, chilly and breezy weather to continue, but temperatures won't get quite as cold as this morning--not yet, at least.

Before another blast of cold air arrives, we'll have to contend with some areas of rain Wednesday morning. This rain will generally be light to moderate, only resulting in a tenth of an inch or so of rain accumulation.

After the rain moves out by midday, we should manage to clear out much of the cloud cover and see some sunshine, but just as the sun peaks out, another blast of cold air arrives Wednesday afternoon and evening.

The coldest of the weather invades Southwest Florida Thursday-Saturday with morning lows as cold as the mid to upper 30s for those of us away from the coast and highs barely breaking out of the 50s Thursday and Friday afternoon.

By late this weekend, temperatures finally rebound into the 70s.

Get ready. It's going to be a cold week for Southwest Florida! Return to index of stories...

CODY ~ TOWER CAMS-WX WALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

PRESS RELEASE

City Manager Howard Kunik Announces Selection of New Police Chief

Punta Gorda, Fla. – Punta Gorda City Manager Howard Kunik announced today that he has selected Pamela R. Davis to serve as the next Punta Gorda Police Chief. Ms. Davis is currently the Director of the Professional Development and Training Academy for the City of Baltimore Police Department. Prior to her current position, Ms. Davis served 23 years with the Anne Arundel County Police Department working up the ranks from Patrol Officer to Deputy Chief of Police.

City Manager Kunik points to Davis’s leadership abilities, broad public safety background and extensive training acumen as qualities that elevated her to be the top choice. "I was impressed with her genuine demeanor and overall leadership and technical skills that will enable her to re-energize the department within as well as our extensive partnerships with the community. Pam is well prepared to step into the position and re-elevate our Police Department to pinnacle status," said City Manager Howard Kunik.

Davis’s 26 years of experience in police services have included a wide range of responsibilities to include professional development and training, administration, patrol, investigations, crises intervention, internal affairs, labor negotiations and community outreach. Pam assisted with creation of a Citizens Advisory Council and Business Advisory Council that resulted in enhanced relationships and trust with all areas of the Anne Arundel community. She was the architect of that department’s first crisis intervention team to address the systematic problem of dealing with mentally ill people, a program nationally recognized by the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Upon joining the Baltimore Police Department in September 2016, Pam assumed responsibility for training to ensure compliance with the Department of Justice Consent Decree and all Maryland Police Training Standards Commission regulations. She created the first ever Training Academy Community Engagement Unit.

Davis holds a Master of Science Degree in Management/Leadership from Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor of Arts in Labor Studies Degree from National Labor College. She attended the FBI National Academy and the Police Executive Research Forum – Senior Management Institute for Police.

The process to select a new Police Chief involved representatives from the City’s residential neighborhoods, business sectors and Police Department staff, who engaged the eight finalists in conversations culminating with their overall insights to the City Manager. City Council members also had the opportunity to meet the candidates and observe the panel discussions. The eight candidates also interviewed with the City Manager, who was assisted by the Assistant State Attorney – Charlotte County Office.

"It is an absolute honor to be selected as the Chief of Police for the City of Punta Gorda. One of the things I am most excited about Punta Gorda, is the active engagement between community members, business leaders, and city government. I am eager to be a part of that interaction and to be a part of such a wonderful, vibrant community. With this position comes tremendous responsibility and accountability that I am fully prepared to undertake. I look forward to leading a progressive Punta Gorda Police Department that will continue to focus on providing quality customer service," said Pamela Davis.

We welcome Pamela Davis to the Punta Gorda community. Her start date will be January 2, 2018.

A Gainesville, Florida, police officer who gained unexpected fame as one of the "hot cops" responding to Hurricane Irma has resigned from the department amid allegations he made anti-Semitic Facebook posts and had sex with a woman while on duty.

Gainesville Police Department Officer Michael Hamill had been suspended in September following the Facebook allegations. He resigned Dec. 6, the day he was to be interviewed in an Internal Affairs investigation.

Department spokesman Ben Tobias said both allegations would have been sustained based on evidence. It is possible Hamill, who was hired in 2016, would have been terminated as a result.

In early September, the department posted a selfie of Hamill and two other GPD officers "getting ready to do some work" as Hurricane Irma swept through Florida. The post of the "hot cops" drew thousands of admirers and many departments across the country followed suit by posting their own photos of studly officers.

But just weeks after the Sept. 10 post, the department received complaints about the Facebook posts and a sexual relationship he had with a woman.

Investigators uncovered two posts Hamill had made to his personal Facebook account before he was on the Gainesville police force. In one from 2011, he says, "Stupid people annoy me," then added, "put them in an oven and deal with them the hitler way. Haha."

He posted that "reading Jewish jokes" helped him feel better about himself in a 2014 post. He then offered the following: "What's the difference between boy scouts and Jews? Boy scouts come back from their camps."

The department said the "offensive nature" of the posts affected Hamill's ability to interact with the community.

Department investigators also found Hamill had sex with a woman while he was on duty, using interviews, GPS readings and text messages. The woman told investigators the on-duty visits stopped after she found out Hamill was married, which occurred after the "hot cops" post went viral.

Tobias, in an email, said the department takes officer misconduct "extremely seriously."

The department will begin requiring all of its recruits to visit the Florida Holocaust Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida, before being sworn. He said the incident involving Hamill was "not solely" the reason for the tours, adding the department had been in contact with the museum before the incident. Return to index of stories...

CODY FUTURE & 7 DAY-WX CTR TO WX WALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
