FIRST -- THOUGH -- WE TURN TO OUR WEATHER EXPERT.

CHIEF METEOROLOGIST JOHN PATRICK ON HOW COLD IT WILL BE OVERNIGHT AND TOMORROW MORNING. Return to index of stories...

FIRST WX-BAM

Temperatures averaged 10 to 15 degrees below normal today and we will continue that trend again tonight. Skies will be mostly cloudy this evening and the wind will be gusty from the north throughout the night. A few, very isolated, showers are possible as we start the day on Wednesday as an area of low pressure crosses the state. The temperatures are chilly and will stay below normal for the next 3 to 4 days.

The aforementioned low pressure area could even scare up a few flakes of snow on Wednesday, but this would be well north of Orlando. if it occurs. A few showers of rain will make for a gray and dreary day on Wednesday.

This cold snap will continue for the rest of week. By Friday morning we will run a good chance of widespread 30's for morning low temperatures. For your forward planning, it might be a good idea to cover sensitive plants on Friday morning. Return to index of stories...

DANNY DONEHOO IS PREPPING HIS YARD NOW TO LAST THROUGH THE COLD.

03:01:14 so we got our banana tree and we keep it nice and moist 18

03:00:01 they don't like the very very cold weather so what we do is we put water on the trees so that it will keep them from freezing over 09

LANDSCAPERS SAY TO START WATERING PLANTS NOW BEFORE IT GETS COOLER.

03:17:07 so we look at soaking the ground real heavy before you shut the irrigation off 11

SOMETHING SOLEDAD QUINONES WHO SPENDS A GOOD AMOUNT OF TIME MANICURING HER LAWN.

03:08:50 every week, atleast 2 hours 50

IS PLANNING TO DO.

03:11:51 usually we don't water them too much but if we know that the temperature will be low, because it will cause damage, it will be too much water, it will be more ice 58

EXPERTS SUGGEST SHUTTING THAT IRRIGATION OFF BEFORE THE TEMPERATURES DIP BELOW 40.

03:17:03 water running in these cold temperatures will ice the plant material create frost 07

AND WHEN TEMPERATURES GO BELOW 40, ITS TIME TO COVER PLANTS UP. BUT MAKE SURE TO USE A COTTON MATERIAL.

03:16:53 biggest thing we like to avoid is people using plastic cuz the cold will burn through the plastic and damage the plants, if not more 00

AND IF IT GETS EVEN COOLER.

03:11:27 if its gonna be 30, you will see the difference. But it will recuperate

RESIDENTS WILL BE READY, TO PROTECT THEIR INVESTMENT.

HEATERS-LIVE

AFTER TALKING WITH HOME HEATING EXPERTS TODAY --

THEY SAY THE QUESTION THEY GET THE MOST AFTER SOMEONE TURNS ON THEIR HEAT FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A WHILE IS --

WHY DOES IT SMELL LIKE MY HOUSE IS ON FIRE?

IT'S ACTUALLY BECAUSE SMALL DUST PARTICLES HAVE SETTLED ONTO THE COILS IN YOUR HEATER --

AND THEY'RE BEING BURNED OFF --

SO THAT SMELL YOU SHOULD NOT SURPRISE YOU WHEN YOU HIT THE HEAT. Return to index of stories...

HEATERS-VO

SO LET'S TALK ABOUT HOW YOU CAN MINIMIZE THE SMELL --

START BY OPENING UP YOUR WINDOWS AND DOORS.

THEN --

YOU SHOULD CHECK YOUR AIR FILTER.

IF IT'S DIRTY AT ALL --

REPLACE IT BECAUSE THAT DUST CAN RESTRICT AIR FLOW AND CAUSE IT TO OVERHEAT --

WHICH CAN CAUSE A FIRE.

THEN JUST FLIP THE SWITCH TO HEAT MODE --

TURN UP THE TEMPERATURE A FEW DEGREES --

AND EXPECT IT TO SMELL LIKE SOMETHING IS ON FIRE --

EVEN THOUGH IT PROBABLY ISN'T. Return to index of stories...

HEATERS-SOTVO LIVE

If you smell it for longer than 15 or 20 minutes, I wouldn't be alarmed if you don't see any smoke. Just open the windows and doors. If the smell keeps continuing and grows, then I would obviously shut it down and get somebody out there to look at it and see what's going on

YOU SHOULD NEVER SEE SMOKE --

SO IF YOU DO --

SOT Maria Sanchez, FGCU student: "My New Years resolution is to run 1,200 miles this year."

Fitness centers are filling up with people trying to improve their health in 2018.

SOT Charlie Olenyck, Lee County resident: "I just want to continue to improve my physical fitness. A lot of people take care of material things they have but it's important to take care of your body because you only get one of those"

SOT Rich Kline, Regional Trainer, Around the clock Fitness, "Nobody says that exercise is going to make you live longer, but it's definitely going to make the years that you have much better and a better quality of life."

For those who don't know where to begin, experts recommended trying a group exercise class.

SOT Tracy Ottman, Group Exercise Coordinator, "Its very motivating because you're exercising in a group. It's less intimidating because everyone is basically doing the same thing as you are."

SOT Rich Kline, "We want you to find a good support group. Whether it's a husband, a wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, a trainer. It's about community, about holding each other accountable."

Trainers recommend body weight exercises for beginners. And they urge everyone to stretch before your workout. But the most important change actually comes away from the gym, and in the kitchen.

SOT Rich Kline, "We want you to pick a goal with a really good plan that has balanced out nutrition, cardio and weight training."

Make sure not cut out too many calories. Instead, focus on eating more healthy foods.

SOT Charlie Olenyck: "Developing a healthy quality of life is important to me this year."

This year violations of the state's do not call list were by far the most common complaints filed with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. With more than 19,000 complaints, it's nearly nine times as many as the second most common complaint category, landlords.
