BRACING FOR BITTER COLD TEMPERATURES!

PEOPLE IN FLORIDA ARE STOCKING UP ON SUPPLIES TO BRAVE THE COOL AIR - CREEPING INSIDE HOMES.

VISITORS TO THE MANATEE VIEWING CENTER IN TAMPA, FLORIDA ARE SEEING A HUGE GROUP OF THE GENTLE GIANTS GATHERING.

--VO SCRIPT--

MANATEES ARE CONGREGATING IN THE AREA BECAUSE IT IS LOCATED NEAR A POWER STATION'S DISCHARGE CANAL.

THE FACILITY USES SEA WATER FOR COOLING AND THEN RETURNS THE WARMED WATER BACK TO TAMPA BAY.

LIKE MOST OF THE EAST COAST, TAMPA IS ENDURING UNSEASONABLY COLD TEMPERATURES WITH LOWS IN THE 30S.

MANATEES ARE EXTREMELY SENSITIVE TO THE COLD AND CAN DIE IN WATER BELOW 68 DEGREES.

COLD WEATHER IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE IN THE AREA UNTIL NEXT WEEK, WHEN HIGHS WILL REBOUND FROM THE 50S TO THE 70S.

HERE IN FLORIDA --

PEOPLE HAVE ALSO DIED FROM COLD TEMPERATURES.

A RECENT STUDY SHOWED FROM 19-79 TO 19-99 --

MORE THAN 1-HUNDRED PEOPLE DIED.

IN DECEMBER OF 19-89 --

26 FLORIDIANS DIED FROM HYPOTHERMIA.

BECAUSE OF NORMALLY MILD TEMPERATURES --

EXPERTS SAY FLORIDA HOMES OFTEN LACK ADEPQUATE HEATING AND INSULATION.

INLAND AREAS OF FLORIDA ARE MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO BELOW FREEZING TEMPERATURES DURING THE MIDDLE PART OF JANUARY.

A recent study revealed that from 1979 to 1999, 124 people in Florida died from the cold, not including those who have perished in house fires started by space heaters, or from other secondary causes. Numerous deaths usually occur during brief cold snaps, such as in December 1989 when 26 Floridians died from hypothermia.

Freezing Temperatures. Because of normally mild temperatures, Florida homes often lack adequate heating and insulation. Also, the Florida outdoor lifestyle can lead to danger for those not prepared for freezing temperatures. In addition, freezing temperatures in South Florida can cause widespread damage to sensitive plants and crops. Fortunately, overnight temperatures rarely drop below freezing in South Florida, especially along the coasts. Inland areas are more susceptible to below freezing temperatures, primarily during the middle part of January. In addition, inland sections of the metropolitan areas are more likely to experience freezing temperatures than coastal areas. Return to index of stories...

CODY ~ FUTURE & 7 DAY-WX CTR TO WX WALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Another big blast of cold air arrives in Southwest Florida today, but before the chilly air rushes in, we'll see the potential for a few showers today.

The highest rain chance will come during the first half of the day, so grab the umbrella on the way out the door this morning.

Today's rain won't be too heavy or widespread, and rain amounts will generally stay below a quarter inch.

Temperatures won't start of as low as yesterday morning, but it's still going to be quite chilly especially once you factor in the brisk northerly wind that will gust up to 20-25 mph at times today.

We'll start off in the low to mid 50s this morning, and with some breaks in the clouds this afternoon, we should manage to warm into the low to mid 60s.

Temperatures will turn sharply cold tonight, and the wind will make it feel several degrees colder.

Morning lows Thursday will tumble into the low 40s in town and into the mid to upper 30s across our inland communities like Hendry and Glades County.

Wind chill values, however, will get down into the 30s and possibly as low as the upper 20s deep inland.

The good news is Thursday and Friday will feature a lot more sunshine, but temperatures will struggle to reach the low 60s thanks to a cold northerly wind.

Friday and Saturday morning will be the coldest of the week, and temperatures will be close to freezing for locations farther north like Arcadia and deeper inland over portions of Glades and Hendry County.

A freeze watch may be issued for our inland counties for Friday and Saturday morning, so precautions may need to be taken to protect plants and vegetation here.

The cold snap ends late this weekend into early next week as temperatures rebound into the 70s, but long-range forecast models hint at another cool down coming by the middle of next week. Return to index of stories...

CITRUS GROWERS COLD-PKG

THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE WHEN YOU PREPARE AN ORANGE GROVE FOR A COLD SNAP.

GROWERS WATER TREES TO BRING HEAT UP FROM THE GROUND.

hoping to protect precious crops.

Ron Mahan

44:56

We're certainly prepared. In farming, that's one of the things you do. You're always looking ahead and getting the forecast. 46:02

Growers usually like a little cold weather.

But This winter— they are concerned about the impacts. Trees are weakened by the citrus greening disease.

And then were hit again by Hurricane Irma.

Mahan

48:19

Hopefully we don't have a freeze impact that will kind of be a triple whammy.:24 tz

Southwest Florida growers lost most of their crop during Hurricane Irma.

And greening has been decimating citrus trees for the last decade.

But there's not enough research yet that shows how much greening weakens trees.

And this week will be a huge learning experience.

Dr. Kelly Morgan

IFAS

36:44

We've had this disease, greening disease HLB, that has devastated the industry and weakened our trees.:51

We don't know how cold the trees can sustain.:56

THESE WEATHER STATIONS WILL SHOW THE GROWERS AT TAMIAMI CITRUS WEATHER DATA AT MANY DIFFERENT PLACES IN THE GROVES.

THE PLAN IS TO PICK ALL OF THESE ORANGES IN MARCH.

SO THE HOPE IS THAT THE COLD WONT AFFECT THAT TOO MUCH.

Mahan

We'll be prepared and ready to go but obviously we'll be watching to se what the impacts are.:31 Return to index of stories...

"Of course when charley hit, people said hey free mulch lets go get it. All of a sudden i put it in their house and a week or 10 days later people start calling and complaining cause the stench"

"You've got your Brazilian peppers, paper trees, all exotics we have to cut down and get rid of. Its all mixed together all the root systems it starts fermenting and it's horrible stuff"

CODY ~ DAY PLANNER-WX WALL

FLORIDA COLD DEATHS-KEYRVL

IN YEARS PAST -- PEOPLE HAVE DIED FROM THE COLD IN FLORIDA.

FROM 19-79 TO 19-99 -- MORE THAN 1-HUNDRED PEOPLE SUCCUMBED TO THE COLD.

IN 19-89 -- 26 FLORIDIANS DIED OF HYPOTHERMIA.
