REPAIRS SLOWLY GO ON

HOMES STILL FEELING THE EFFECTS OF HURRICANE IRMA -

11:53:01

It was bad. Be floors were damaged, the walls were swollen, the door jams were swollen.

A LOT OF HOMES IN THE ROYAL WOODS NEIGHBORHOOD SIT VACANT-

11:50:34

The drywall has been damaged, there's like 3 feet of water, a lot of the electrical outlets are bad, it's not livable.

-AS FAMILIES ANXIOUSLY WAIT TO GET BACK HOME.

11:49:20

Right now we are waiting for insurance check which are not coming trying to get back, people are trying to get back in and really they are moving very slow.

THOSE LIVING IN A CONSTRUCTION ZONE-

11:50:11

And then the cold weather

BLUE TARPS COVER DOZENS OF HOMES.

STAYING WARM AND STRONG WINDS NOW A CONCERN AS TEMPERATURES DROP.

11:49:56

The roofs, they're not working on the roofs. I don't know why, we need to get people in here to help the work on the roofs, to do the repairs inside. It just seems like the help is not coming.

KEEPING IT WARM-OTS VO OC

L-C-E-C TELLS US-- RUNNING THE HEATER COSTS MORE-- THAN RUNNING AN AIR CONDITIONER.

BUT THERE'S A LOT YOU CAN DO TO KEEP THE HEAT INSIDE-- SAVING YOU SOME CASH.

AT LEAST 38 PERCENT OF HEAT IS LOST THROUGH CRACKS IN YOUR DOORS AND WINDOWS.

SEAL CRACKS AROUND WINDOWS AND DOORS.

USE SPACE HEATERS AND BUNDLE UP IF YOU CAN, BUT IF CENTRAL AIR IS YOUR ONLY OPTION--

KEEPING IT AT 68 DEGREES WILL SAVE YOU A BUNDLE.

YOU CAN ALSO LOWER YOUR WATER HEATER TEMPERATURE-- TO HELP OFFSET THE COST.

IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR AN EVEN MORE COST-EFFECTIVE OPTION, SIMPLY CLEAN YOUR SOUTH FACING WINDOWS AND LEAVE THE BLINDS OPEN-- SO THE SUN CAN HEAT YOUR HOME DURING THE DAY.

DO COVER THEM UP AT NIGHT-- TO KEEP THAT HEAT FROM ESCAPING. Return to index of stories...

HEATING COOL POOLS-VOTOPS

A GAS POOL HEATER IS SLIGHTLY MORE EXPENSIVE TO INSTALL --

BUT IT'S A RECOVERY UNIT --

SO NO MATTER HOW COLD YOUR POOL WATER GETS --

A GAS HEATER JUST NEEDS PROPANE AND TIME TO WARM IT BACK UP --

AN ELECTRIC HEAT PUMP IS MEANT TO MAINTAIN WATER TEMPERATURE.

IT PULLS HEAT FROM THE ATMOSPHERE AROUND IT --

SO IF IT'S BELOW 50 DEGREES OUTSIDE AND THE WATER ISN'T WARM ALREADY --

EXPERTS SAY IT'S NOT WORTH TRYING TO TURN IT ON. Return to index of stories...

11:27:40 "Cover your cough or your nose with a tissue when you sneeze and cough, and make sure that you dispose of those and wash your hands.":48

DESPITE POPULAR BELIEF -- DOCTORS SAY COLD WEATHER DOESN'T MAKE YOUR FLU WORSE OR LAST LONGER-- BUT SAY FRIGID TEMPERATURES OUTSIDE COULD LEAD TO OTHERS GATHERING TOGETHER INSIDE MORE--

AND INCREASING THE CHANCE OF SPREADING IT.

SANDY BIGGAR'S "U-PICK TOMATO FARM" ON GLADIOLUS IS NOTABLE BECAUSE OF ITS DISTANCE FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO.

TYPICALLY DURING THESE COLD SNAPS, IT STAYS JUST WARM ENOUGH HERE FOR EVERYTHING TO SURVIVE.

HE SAYS HIS LAST FREEZE WAS 1989.

THE PLANTS CAN ACTUALLY SURVIVE SUB-FREEZING TEMPERATURES FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS-- WITHOUT NEEDING TO BE COVERED. Return to index of stories...

THEY TOOK A BIG HIT WITH IRMA-- LOSING A LOT OF THEIR HARVEST.

HOWEVER, IF THE TEMPS DON'T GO THAT LOW --

THE COOLER WEATHER MAY ACTUALLY TURN THEIR CITRUS SWEETER.

BUT FARMERS AREN'T TAKING ANY CHANCES.

There is a wind chill advisory in place so it'll feel much colder outside with the breezy conditions.
