JP FIRST WEATHER-WXCTR

Temperatures will turn sharply cold tonight, and the wind will make it feel several degrees colder.

Morning lows Thursday will tumble into the low 40s in town and into the mid to upper 30s across our inland communities like Hendry and Glades County.

Wind chill values, however, will get down into the 30s and possibly as low as the upper 20s deep inland.

The good news is Thursday and Friday will feature a lot more sunshine, but temperatures will struggle to reach the low 60s thanks to a cold northerly wind.

Friday and Saturday morning will be the coldest of the week, and temperatures will be close to freezing for locations farther north like Arcadia and deeper inland over portions of Glades and Hendry County.

A freeze watch may be issued for our inland counties for Friday and Saturday morning, so precautions may need to be taken to protect plants and vegetation here.

The cold snap ends late this weekend into early next week as temperatures rebound into the 70s, but long-range forecast models hint at another cool down coming by the middle of next week. Return to index of stories...

ABC7 WEEKEND ANCHOR ROSS DIMATTEI FOUND OUT YOUR POOL HEATER--

MAY NOT BE WORKING AS EFFICIENTLY IN THE COLD BLAST. Return to index of stories...

POOL HEATERS AND COLD-PKG

SOT: Fred Heles / Cape Coral Resident

5:22:00-:05

The jacuzzi can go from the low 60's to 102 in 20,25 minutes.

FRED HELES RECENTLY INSTALLED A POOL AND JACUZZI AT HIS CAPE CORAL HOME.

SOT: Fred Heles / Cape Coral Resident

5:21:22-:27

I felt that propane or a gas-fired unit was going to be more efficient than an electric unit.

THE OTHER REASON HE PICKED A PROPANE HEATER --

SO HE CAN HEAT HIS POOL IN A HURRY --

EVEN ON A RARE CHILLY NIGHT IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.

SOT: Fred Heles / Cape Coral Resident

5:21:30-:42

I want to be able to turn the jacuzzi on and get the water up into the jacuzzi very fast. At the same time, if there's periods of time when I'm out of town, I don't necessarily want to leave the pool heated.

AN ELECTRIC POOL HEATER DOESN'T WORK THE SAME WAY.

SOT: Mark Forster / President, "Pool Doctor"

5:08:00-:06

It takes the heat out of the air. It's kind of like an air conditioning unit. It takes the heat out of the air and puts it in your pool.

THE PUMP MEARLY MAINTAINS WARM WATER --

AND DOESN'T WORK AS WELL IN COLDER TEMPERATURES.

SOT: Mark Forster / President, "Pool Doctor"

5:07:20-:26

when the temperature gets around 50 or below, then heat pumps really don't function.

THAT'S WHY EXPERTS RECOMMEND USING A POOL BLANKET --

TO KEEP YOUR WATER WARM YEAR ROUND.

SOT: Adam Bechdel / Owner, "Penguin Pools"

5:18:45-:55

You might lose one or two degrees at night if the air temp is in the 60's or 50's. If you don't have that blanket on there, your pool will acclimate every night to the air temperature. Return to index of stories...

POOL HEATERS AND COLD-1 SHOT, 2 SHOT

CERTAIN TYPES OF ELECTRIC POOL HEATERS --

WILL ACTUALLY SHUT OFF WHEN IT GETS TOO COLD.

INSTEAD OF TRYING TO TURN IT BACK ON --

EXPERTS RECOMMEND YOU KEEP YOUR WATER WARM YEAR-ROUND USING A POOL BLANKET.

WHILE PEOPLE MAY NOT BE TAKING A DIP IN THE POOL--

WHY SHOULD PEOPLE COVER THERE POOLS NOW?

IF YOU DO COVER YOUR POOL BEFORE IT GETS TOO COLD IN THE MORNING--

IT WILL TRAP THE HEAT INSIDE--

SAVING YOU A LOT OF MONEY IN THE LONG RUN --

RATHER THAN HEATING UP YOUR COLD POOL EVERY TIME YOU WANT TO USE IT. Return to index of stories...

AT ISLAND SEAFOOD MARKET.

Andy Fischer, manager, Island Seafood Market

03:58 " we own three boats ourselves that are going out every week so we're catching our own groupers and snappers." 04:03

AND THIS WEEK'S COLD SNAP COULD HEAT UP FISHING LINES —

Andy Fischer, manager, Island Seafood Market

00:39 " The fish can feel that barometric pressure so they end up bunching up even more than typical. So as far as after a storm it's actually some of our best fishing." 47

WHICH END UP ON PLATES AT RESTAURANTS LIKE THE BLUE DOG.

John Lynch, owner, Blue Dog

03:44:36 getting ready to breed so they're fat and they're big and this is the time of year to get them." 42

ALTHOUGH WINTER FISHING IS GOOD—

BOTH BUSINESSES HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY RED TIDE SINCE NOVEMBER.

Andy Fischer, manager, Island Seafood Market

01;46 " right now our clammers and oyster guys locally or shut down from the red tide." 50/02:47 "I mean they're a filter feeder so that's why they filter the bloom through their meat and through them so that's why we can't eat them right now." 53

HIGH CONCENTRATIONS WERE JUST FOUND IN 16 SAMPLES FROM FWC —

LAST WEEK IN LEE COUNTY.

John Lynch, owner, Blue Dog

03:44:10 " The mullet we are getting we have to get farther out you know out past Sanibel and up north to get cleaner water which takes more time in fuel and effort." 19

FWC SAYS WINDS AND CURRENTS CAN IMPACT THE MOVEMENT OF RED TIDE.

02:15 "hopefully it turns around but no timetable to know when it will go and be better for us." 19

FWC SAYS UNFORTUNATELY THIS WEEK'S WEATHER EVENT IS NOT PROJECTED TO BRING MUCH CHANGE —

WHICH MEANS CONTINUING TO GO OUT OF LEE COUNTY FOR FRESH SHELLFISH.

THIS FISH IS NOT AFFECTED BY THE RED TIDE —

BECAUSE THEY DON'T FILTER FEED LIKE SHELLFISH.

FWC SAYS THEY ARE CLOSELY MONITORING THE MOVEMENT OF THE RED TIDE.
