Forecast: Cold settles in across Southwest Florida

Temperatures have dipped into the 30s in many parts of Southwest Florida Thursday morning. Gusty winds are making it feel even colder, in some cases it could feel like it's in the 20s as you step out the door. Gloves and hats are a good idea if you're outside early in the day as the wind will make you feel cold fairly quickly.

Once the sun comes up we'll see a quick warm up to more reasonable temperatures, but it will still be in the 40s until around 11 a.m. We are going to struggle to get above 60 degrees today and many areas won't get there. Expect upper 50s to right at 60 degrees in the mid afternoon with plenty of sunshine.

Winds will die down tonight which will take away the wind chill issue but should also allow our actual air temperatures to get a little bit colder! Most areas will wake up in the 30s again on Friday with freezing temperatures possible in DeSoto, Glades, and Hendry counties. It will be sunny again on Friday but highs will only be a degree or two warmer than today.

The weekend brings a change back to more normal weather. It will still be quite chilly in the mornings with more 30s on Saturday and 40s on Sunday. Sunday will also see us warm to the 70s again in the afternoon for the first time in almost a week!

For next week, we are tracking another front that could bring some showers to the area, but should not bring anything close to the cold conditions that we're experiencing now. Return to index of stories...

MANY PLACES ALONG THE EAST COAST ARE NO STRANGERS TO BITTER COLD TEMPERATURES AND SNOW THIS TIME OF YEAR.

BUT FOR OTHERS, LIKE SAY, FLORIDA. IT'S A DIFFERENT STORY

MOS: "it's amazing. I've never seen this much snow here."

TALLAHASSEE SAW MEASURABLE SNOWFALL FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ALMOST 30 YEARS WEDNESDAY, MANY SEEING SNOW FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME.

IN FACT, THE UNUSUALLY FRIGID CONDITIONS FORCED ROAD CLOSURES AND THE CLOSING OF STATE UNIVERSITIES.

AND IN SOUTH CAROLINA, A COASTAL TOWN KNOWN MORE FOR IT'S BRUTAL SUMMERS, SNOW AND ICE COVERED PALM TREES AND CIVIL WAR MEMORIALS.

EVERY EAST COAST STATE FROM MAINE TO FLORIDA IS UNDER SOME TYPE OF WINTER STORM WATCH, OR WARNING, AND METEOROLOGISTS EXPECT IT TO STAY THAT WAY FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK. AUTHORITIES ARE URGING RESIDENTS TO STAY INSIDE.

Deputy Chief Russell Wells/Jasper Co. Emergency Services: "if you don't have a reason to be out.don't be out."

NEW ENGLAND IS EXPECTED TO GET SIX TO TWELVE INCHES OF SNOW, ALONG WITH HURRICANE FORCE WINDS STARTING THURSDAY, THANKS TO A "BOMBOGENESIS," OR RAPIDLY DECLINING LOW AIR PRESSURE.

IN FACT, SOME AREAS COULD SEE WIND SPEEDS HIGHER THAN HURRICANE SANDY.

Kathryn Garcia/ NYC Sanitation Commissioner: "we're going to have exceptionally strong winds, so anything that is falling in these cold temperatures is likely to blow around and drift."

BY THE END OF THIS WEEK, PARTS OF THE NORTHEAST WILL BE COLDER THAN MARS.

CODY ~ FUTURE & 7 DAY-WX CTR TO WX WALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

CODY ~ DAY PLANNER-WX CTR
