FIRST WEATHER-WX CTR

A very chilly morning here in SWFL with temperatures in the upper 30s and low 40s. Most places this morning feeling like they are close to freezing when you factor in the wind chill. Expect a cold and breezy day even as we get into the afternoon with our highs making it up into the upper 50s.

Make sure you are bundled up tomorrow morning because temperatures are expected to be even colder than today! If you haven't already, you will want to bring in any outdoor plants and pets shouldn't be outside for too long. Highs will make it up into the low 60s with mainly clear skies.

These clear conditions will allow our morning temperatures to continue to stay very chilly so keep the coat around as we head into the weekend.

Relief is on the way and we will warm up as we get closer to next week when our highs will be back in the mid 70s. Return to index of stories...

THOSE TEMPERATURES ARE DROPPING--

YOUR HEAT IS PROBABLY ON.

SO NOW--

ABC7 GETS YOU MORE ON HOW TO SAVE SOME MONEY ON YOUR ENERGY BILLS.

IT STARTS WITH YOUR THERMOSTAT.

LCEC RECOMMENDS EVERYONE TURN THE DIAL DOWN TO 68 DEGREES.

THEY SAY IT'S THE MOST EFFICIENT SETTING FOR CONDITIONS LIKE THESE.

THE ENERGY COMPANY HAS SEEN MAJOR SPIKES IN ENERGY BILLS, BECAUSE HOMEOWNERS HAVE DONE THE OPPOSITE AND CRANKED THE HEAT.

AT LEAST 38 PERCENT OF HEAT IS LOST THROUGH CRACKS IN YOUR DOORS AND WINDOWS, SO WEATHER PROOF YOUR DOORS AND WINDOWS..

IF YOU DO NEED HEAT, CONSIDER A SPACE HEATER.

LCEC SAYS THEY REQUIRE FAR LESS ENERGY THAN YOUR HEATER. Return to index of stories...

HEATING A COLD POOL-OC-VO

IF YOUR POOL HEATER STOPPED WORKING AROUND THE TIME THE TEMPERATURES STARTED DROPPING --

IT'S PROBABLY NOT BROKEN.

LOCAL POOL EXPERTS TELL ABC-7 --

MANY ELECTRIC POOL PUMPS SHUT OFF WHEN THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE DROPS BELOW 50 DEGREES.

WHEN IT'S WARM --

EXPERTS RECOMMEND YOU USE A POOL BLANKET TO TRAP THE HEAT --

AND KEEP YOUR WATER WARM ALL YEAR ROUND.

THAT DECISION COULD SAVE YOU A LOT OF TIME AND MONEY --

INSTEAD OF TRYING TO HEAT UP A COLD POOL. Return to index of stories...

GET MORE TYPES OF HEATERS-KEY

NOW LET'S GET YOU MORE.

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF HEATERS FOR POOLS.

ONE IS A HEAT PUMP --

WHICH IS ELECTRIC.

THE OTHER IS PROPANE GAS.

HEAT PUMPS PULL HEAT FROM THE AIR --

HUMIDITY --

AND WATER AROUND IT TO KEEP THE POOL WATER WARN.

RIGHT NOW THERE'S NOT MUCH WARMTH IN ANY OF THOSE AREAS --

SO THAT'S WHY THAT HEAT PUMP WITH TURN OFF.

PROPANE HEATERS ARE CONSIDERED RECOVERY HEATERS.

THAT BECAUSE NO MATTER HOW COLD YOU LET THE WATER GET --

A PROPANE HEATER CAN HEAT IT BACK UP TO HOWEVER WARM YOU WOULD LIKE YOUR POOL TO BE. Return to index of stories...

NORTHERN WINTER STORM-2SHOT

PEOPLE LIVING ON THE EAST COAST ARE ALL BRACING FOR AN INCOMING "BOMB CYCLONE."

SEVERE WEATHER ALERTS ARE IN PLACE FROM FLORIDA UP TO MAINE, WITH FREEZING RAIN, SLEET, SNOW, HURRICANE-FORCE WINDS, OR SOME WINTRY-MIX COMBINATION EXPECTED.

YON POMRENZE HAS MORE THIS MORNING IN BOSTON Return to index of stories...

NORTHERN WINTER STORM-PKG

FROM FLORIDA TO MAINE -- MORE THAN 60 MILLION AMERICANS ARE FACING THE THREAT OF SEVERE WEATHER.

MOS: It's amazing. I've never seen this much snow here.

TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA, GOT IT'S FIRST MEASURABLE SNOWFALL SINCE 1989 -- NEARLY 30 YEARS AGO.

CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA GOT MORE THAN FIVE INCHES OF SNOW.

EVERY EAST COAST STATE FROM MAINE TO FLORIDA IS UNDER SOME TYPE OF WINTER STORM WATCH, OR WARNING, AND METEOROLOGISTS EXPECT IT TO STAY THAT WAY FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK. AUTHORITIES ARE URGING RESIDENTS TO STAY INSIDE.

Deputy Chief Russell Wells / Jasper Co. Emergency Services: "If you don't have a reason to be out, don't be out.

THE NORTHEAST MAY SEE SIX TO TWELVE INCHES OF SNOW, ALONG WITH HURRICANE FORCE WINDS TODAY, THANKS TO A "BOMBOGENESIS," OR AREA OF RAPIDLY DECLINING LOW AIR PRESSURE. IN FACT, SOME AREAS COULD SEE WIND SPEEDS HIGHER THAN HURRICANE SANDY.

MOS: You always worry when there's a lot of wind blowing that the trees are going to come down.

Kathryn Garcia / NYC Sanitation Commissioner: We're going to have exceptionally strong winds, so anything that is falling in these cold temperatures is likely to blow around and drift.

BY THE END OF THIS WEEK, PARTS OF THE NORTHEAST WILL BE COLDER THAN MARS.

Herman Schaffer / NYC Emergency Management Assistant Commissioner: It's going to be incredibly low temperatures, it is going to get lower after the storm, so this weekend is going to be incredibly cold.

IN BOSTON, I'M YON POMRENZE. Return to index of stories...

CODY ~ FUTURE & 7 DAY-WX WALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.A very chilly morning here in SWFL with temperatures in the upper 30s and low 40s.

NOT ONLY ARE SOUTHWEST FLORIDIANS BRACING FOR COLD---

BUT ALSO FOR WHAT HEALTH EXPERTS SAY IS ONE OF THE MOST CONTAGIOUS FLU SEASONS IN YEARS.

ACCORDING TO THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH-- LEE HEALTH HAS REPORTED 330 CONFIRMED FLU CASES IN THE LAST 3 DAYS.

LAST YEAR AT THIS TIME-- THAT NUMBER WAS 140.

DOCTORS SAY THERE'S STILL TIME TO GET VACCINATED-- AND STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF HAND WASHING TO PREVENT THE SPREAD.

AND WHILE THE COLD WEATHER DOESN'T PLAY A FACTOR IN WORSENING FLU SYMPTOMS, DOCTORS SAY IT COULD FORCE MORE PEOPLE TO GATHER TOGETHER INSIDE-- SPREADING THE VIRUS. Return to index of stories...
