FIRST WEATHER-live lynx 1 sqbx

t will be a rather cold start by Florida standards this morning with lows anywhere from the mid 30s to around 40 degrees. Winds are beginning to turn out of the east across Southwest Florida which will keep our temperatures from reaching freezing in many areas. While the winds will help keep the freeze and frost away you'll feel a bit of wind chill if you're out early this morning.

As we go through the day it will remain breezy under mostly sunny skies. most areas should get to around 60 degrees this afternoon. It will be another chilly night as we head into Saturday with calmer winds allowing temperatures closer to the coast to get back down into the 30s. A bit of cloud cover by early morning should limit our temperature potential, but it still should be one of the colder nights we've had in the past few years.

Conditions warm considerably for the rest of the weekend with highs in the mid 60s Saturday afternoon and in the 70s Sunday afternoon. We'll wake up in the 40s Sunday morning.

No rain is in the forecast for the weekend, but by Tuesday morning a weak cold front will bring us a chance for showers. The warming trend continues next week with highs near 80 degrees possible. Return to index of stories...

MOSQUITOES IN THE COLD-OC-VO

THE TEMPERATURE IS DROPPING--

BUT IT IS *NOT* TAKING MOSQUITOES DOWN WITH IT.

ALTHOUGH EXPERTS SAY THE BLOOD SUCKING INSECTS ARE LESS ACTIVE IN THE COLD WEATHER--

BUT THAT COULD MEAN MOSQUITOES ARE MOVING CLOSER TO YOUR HOME.

THE CONTROL DISTRICT SAYS IT WOULD TAKE SEVERAL DAYS OF FREEZING TEMPERATURES TO START KILLING OFF THE ADULT INSECTS--

WHILE THEIR EGGS LIE DORMANT.

SO NOW-- MOSQUITOES ARE TRYING TO KEEP WARM.

THE INSECTS WILL DO THIS BY HIDING IN FOLIAGE--

OR CLING CLOSELY TO YOUR HOME.

BECAUSE MOSQUITOES ARE LESS ACTIVE IN COLD, WINDY WEATHER--

THIS MEANS THE DISTRICT IS SPRAYING LESS.

THE LAST TIME AREAS IN LEE COUNTY WERE SPRAYED WAS NEARLY A WEEK AGO.

CODY ~ FUTURE & 7 DAY-LIVE LYNX 1

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.It will be a rather cold start by Florida standards this morning with lows anywhere from the mid 30s to around 40 degrees.

GETTING YOU MORE NOW.

CITRUS AND VEGETABLE FARMERS AREN'T THE ONLY GROWERS WORRIED ABOUT THEIR CROPS IN THE COLD.

ANOTHER SOUTHWEST FLORIDA STAPLE IS ALSO AT RISK

PALM TREE NURSERIES HAVE BEEN WORKING THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT, USING IRRIGATION SYSTEMS TO COVER THEIR TREES IN WATER.

THIS KEEPS THE TREES AT A STEADY TEMPERATURE, AND PREVENTS THEM FROM FREEZING IF IT GETS BELOW 32 DEGREES.

BUT THIS STRATEGY ONLY WORKS IF DONE PROPERLY.

IT REQUIRES THE CONSTANT FLOW OF WATER THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE NIGHT--

One of the coldest mornings waking up in SWFL with temperatures in the upper 30s in most places. If you have to be outside this morning make sure you have the warm layers with the hat, scarf and gloves included. With the wind chill this morning, things will feel even colder. By this afternoon, our temperatures will warm up to the low 60s and the sunshine will help.

If you have any plans this evening, a coat will need to be part of your wardrobe. We will dip back into the 30s and 40s tomorrow morning. By the afternoon, things will start to feel better for your Saturday plans but it'll still be pretty breezy.

Sunday will be the pick day of the weekend with temperatures starting to warm up. We will only be in the mid 40s in the morning and the afternoon we will finally see some 70 degree weather!

Our next chance of rain comes Monday along with our next weather-maker. No worries, it won't bother our temperatures much as we continue to warm up to the upper 70s by next week. Return to index of stories...
