RIGHT NOW AT SEVEN --

A NEW PUSH TO STOP THIS--

nats of crash

WHY TWO WORDS COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE.OR SOMEONE ELSE'S.

PLUS--

ONE SOUTHWEST FLORIDA CITY--

WANTS TO NARROW U.S. 41.

PEOPLE NOW PETITIONING THE PLAN. Return to index of stories...

7PM OPEN-CLIP

7PM SHOW OPEN Return to index of stories...

U.S. 41 REDUCED LANES-SOTVO

3320 it's getting worse and worse every year, and to eliminate one lane I think it's going to be a disaster

ONE SOUTHWEST FLORIDA CITY --

WANTS TO DOWNSIZE.

NAPLES IS CONSIDERING SHRINKING U.S. 41 -- FROM SIX LANES TO FOUR.

41 IS ONE OF OUR BUSIEST ROADS.

ALSO ONE OF OUR MOST DANGEROUS. Return to index of stories...

U.S. 41 REDUCED LANES-2 SH PUSH SSFULL

SO WITH EVERYONE USUALLY FOCUSING ON WIDENING ROADS --

WHY DOES NAPLES WANT TO SHRINK?

I'M JEFF BUTERA.

AND I'M KRISTA FOGELSONG.

THE GOAL IS TO MAKE IT MORE PEDESTRIAN AND BIKE FRIENDLY.

LET ME SHOW YOU WHERE EXACTLY THEY PLAN TO DO THIS.

IT'S A SMALL SECTION--

NEAR DOWNTOWN NAPLES--

BETWEEN 7TH AVENUE NORTH --

TO 5TH AVENUE SOUTH. Return to index of stories...

U.S. 41 REDUCED LANES-VO HALFV SCREEN, VOFULL

HERE'S THE IDEA.

BY GOING FROM THE SIX LANES TO FOUR --

THE CITY COULD ADD MORE BIKE LANES AND SIDEWALKS. Return to index of stories...

U.S. 41 REDUCED LANES-VOFULL

SO WITHIN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS--

WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT--

THERE WILL BE A CHUNK OF CONSTRUCTION ON THAT PART OF U.S. 41.

SO THE CITY OF NAPLES--

DECIDED TO TAKE THAT OPPORTUNITY AND RE-DESIGN THAT STRETCH.

MAKING IT BETTER FOR FOOT TRAFFIC.

BUT PEOPLE WE TALKED TO AREN'T HAPPY ABOUT IT. Return to index of stories...

U.S. 41 REDUCED LANES-SOTVO-WIPE

2240 the sidewalk is right next to the street people are going 45, 50 miles an hour and people don't feel safe

BUTTED TO

2850 I wouldn't be for the idea I think traffic would get terribly backed up around here

BUTTED TO

2210 it won't make them go slower it will make them go 30 miles an hour instead of 45 or 50 which adds to the amount of danger there is when crossing that street

SINCE THE CITY RELEASED THE IDEA--

A PETITION WAS SET UP ALMOST IMMEDIATELY.

THE PLAN IS JUST IN INITIAL PHASES--

SO NOTHING SET IN STONE JUST YET. Return to index of stories...

U.S. 41 REDUCED LANES-CGTOPS

SO WE WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU THINK.

SHOULD PART OF U.S. 41 BE REDUCED FOR BIKERS AND WALKERS?

YES OR NO?

WE PUT THE POLL ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE.

AND IT'S REALLY GOT PEOPLE TALKING.

15:37:39

It's common sense, it's common courtesy and by moving over you can potential he save someone's life.

FLORIDA LAW REQUIRES YOU TO MOVE OVER AT LEAST ONE LANE-

FOR STOPPED LAW ENFORCEMENT, EMERGENCY, UTILITY VEHICLES AND TOW TRUCKS.

12:33:50

I do see a lot of people not moving over and it doesn't really make any sense

12:35:25

It's frustrating, you just wanna make sure everybody gets home OK.

IN 2017-THERE WERE 212 CRASHES

AND NEARLY 17,000 CITATIONS ISSUED FOR MOTORISTS FAILING TO MOVE OVER.

THOSE NUMBERS NOT ACCOUNTING FOR THE NEAR MISSES TROOPERS SEE EVERYDAY.

15:39:48

we're responding to calls that the public asks us to respond to, and in turn, we're asking that you move over so that we too can get home safely each day

A WARNING FOR EVERYONE TO PAY ATTENTION-

AS A MAJORITY OF VIOLATORS ARE BETWEEN THE AGES OF 30 AND 60.

12:34:13

Get out of the way, if you see the lights just move over, stop you never know it might be a grandma in there Return to index of stories...

Every Friday, dozens of seniors come here to play games, cards and socialize— but this week more than ever they are seeing more people looking for a warm place to go and for some help.

FROM GAMES LIKE MAHH JONG.

TO CARDS.

COMPUTERS. AND EXERCISE CLASS.

THE NAPLES SENIOR CENTER HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE.

CAROL

9:36

I just have fun here. I enjoy the ladies, I enjoy the social aspect of it.:42

I'm here a couple times a week.:45

FOR MANY PEOPLE. IT'S A WAY TO GET OUT OF THE HOUSE.

WHICH IS HUGE FOR SOME OLDER PEOPLE. ESPECIALLY DURING THIS COLD WEATHER.

Opa Olbrich

15:20

The basic things is we get some of the folks to come out because a lot of seniors stay one and feel sorry for themselves.:26

THIS WEEK. THIS PLACE HAS BEEN BUSIER THAN NORMAL.

A WELCOME DISTRACTION FROM THE COLD.

BUT THE NONPROFIT THAT RUNS THIS PLACE IS DOING MORE THAN JUST PROVIDING A PLACE TO WARM UP.

THEY WILL BE HELPING MANY SENIOR PAY THEIR HIGH FPL BILLS AFTER THIS COLD WEATHER.

DR. FAFFER, CE

1:00

It's the hardest thing to do is ask for help because they have been in a position before to offer help.:07

They have never been in a position where they thought they would need help to pay bills, help to put food on the table.:14

THE SENIOR CENTER HAS A FOOD PANTRY. WHICH SEES AROUND 450 VISITS A MONTH.

AS WELL AS ACTIVITIES. AND SOCIAL SERVICES.

IN THE 4 YEARS ITS BEEN OPEN. MEMBERSHIP HAS GROWN FROM 80. TO 13 HUNDRED SENIORS. AND THE NEED ONLY KEEPS GROWING.
