NO ONE WAS HURT AFTER HUNDREDS OF GALLONS OF JET FUEL SPILLED AT THE FORT LAUDERDALE-HOLLYWOOD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT.

WORKERS TRIED TO REFUEL A JETBLUE PLANE---

OFFICIALS SAY ALOT OF THE FUEL SPILLED INTO A STORM DRAIN.

IT DIDN'T IMPACT ANY FLIGHTS.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Hundred of gallons of jet fuel spilled Sunday at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, officials said.

Battalion Chief Michael Kane, a spokesman for Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue, said the spill occurred around 1 p.m. at gate E10 as workers tried to refuel a JetBlue aircraft. A good portion of the fuel flowed into a storm drain, which contained most of the spill, Kane said.

The Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue hazardous materials units were on hand to clean up the excess fuel, Kane said. The units were also overseeing foam operations, which suppress harmful vapors.

No one was hurt because of the leak, Kane said.

Gregory Meyer, a spokesman for the airport, said the spill did not affect any flights. He said the plane was empty when the spill occurred. Return to index of stories...

BEAR CUB BURNED BADLY-PKG

TREVOR QUIRK GIVES THIS BEAR CUB IT'S LAST DRINK OF WATER.

Trevor Quirk/Ojai Resident:

"We found the poor little bear that we named Sisa, actually."

QUIRK FOUND THE CUB OFF OF CISAR TRAIL IN THE LOS PADRES NATIONAL FOREST IN VENTURA COUNTY.

THE ANIMAL, BELIEVED TO BE EIGHT MONTHS OLD, HAD BURNS ALL OVER ITS BODY, PRESUMABLY FROM THE THOMAS FIRE.

Trevor Quirk/Ojai Resident:

"The bear was immobile. It had no paws basically. It was very, very sad. Its jaw was burnt through on one side."

THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE SENT A VETERINARIAN, AND A BIOLOGIST TO RECOVER THE BEAR.

BUT, THEY WERE TOO LATE.

THE VET SAYS THE BEAR WAS SUFFERING AND HAD LITTLE CHANCE OF SURVIVAL.

A DECISION WAS MADE TO EUTHANIZE IT.

Trevor Quirk/Ojai Resident:

"We put it into the game warden's truck and took it down the mountain and that was the last I saw of Sisa."

QUIRK IS STILL FEELING EMOTIONAL ABOUT THE THOMAS FIRE, WHICH NEARLY BURNED DOWN HIS UPPER OJAI HOME.

HE MANAGED TO SAVE IT, AND SINCE THEN, SAYS HE'S RAISED MONEY TO PROVIDE RELIEF TO THE FIRE VICTIMS.

Trevor Quirk/Ojai Resident:

"We've raised $100,000 for people who have lost their homes."

QUIRK SAYS THE FIRE BROUGHT THE OJAI COMMUNITY TOGETHER.

AND, WHILE HE'S DEVASTATED BY WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BEAR, HE TAKES SOLACE IN THE FACT THAT IT IS NO LONGER SUFFERING.

Trevor Quirk/Ojai Resident:

"That bear is a very, very sad story. I think that bear in a better place now -- so I'm hoping so."

WEATHER-WXWALL

FULL WX

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Forecast: Warmer weather starts tonight

Southwest Florida is finally turning a corner. Thanks to winds that now are coming at us from the east, our prolonged cold spell is over. Instead of temperatures falling into the 30s and 40s tonight, overnight lows will be much more seasonable for this part of the state in early January.

By sunrise on Monday morning, areas of Lee and Collier Counties will be in the mid 50s; that's right on par with where we normally find ourselves this time of year. A Monday morning temp of 54 can be expected in Fort Myers and Cape Coral, with 55 degrees in communities around Naples.

Through Monday afternoon temperatures will warm up rather quickly, topping out in the middle 70s after lunchtime. The official forecast high is 77 degrees in Fort Myers, with the rest of the region ranging between 74 and 78 degrees.

Rain chances will be low on Monday with our afternoon highlighted by a blend of sun and clouds during the daytime hours.

For the work week ahead, a broad storm system is expected to be moving across the northern Gulf of Mexico. With this system in the region, we'll need to leave the opportunity open for more cloud cover here in South Florida on Tuesday and Wednesday along with at least the chance of a few showers. Despite a bit more cloud cover temperatures will still be warmer than where they've been for most of the year, popping into the upper 70s on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons.

Boating Forecast

No advisories are posted in the Gulf waters on Monday for boaters from the National Weather Service. Mariners can expect east winds between 10 and 15 knots with open seas away from the beaches cresting around 2 feet. A moderate chop is expected on bays and inland waterways.
