WEATHER FORECAST-WXWALL

FULL WX

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Forecast: Warmer weather starts tonight

Southwest Florida is finally turning a corner. Thanks to winds that now are coming at us from the east, our prolonged cold spell is over. Instead of temperatures falling into the 30s and 40s tonight, overnight lows will be much more seasonable for this part of the state in early January.

By sunrise on Monday morning, areas of Lee and Collier Counties will be in the mid 50s; that's right on par with where we normally find ourselves this time of year. A Monday morning temp of 54 can be expected in Fort Myers and Cape Coral, with 55 degrees in communities around Naples.

Through Monday afternoon temperatures will warm up rather quickly, topping out in the middle 70s after lunchtime. The official forecast high is 77 degrees in Fort Myers, with the rest of the region ranging between 74 and 78 degrees.

Rain chances will be low on Monday with our afternoon highlighted by a blend of sun and clouds during the daytime hours.

For the work week ahead, a broad storm system is expected to be moving across the northern Gulf of Mexico. With this system in the region, we'll need to leave the opportunity open for more cloud cover here in South Florida on Tuesday and Wednesday along with at least the chance of a few showers. Despite a bit more cloud cover temperatures will still be warmer than where they've been for most of the year, popping into the upper 70s on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons.

Boating Forecast

No advisories are posted in the Gulf waters on Monday for boaters from the National Weather Service. Mariners can expect east winds between 10 and 15 knots with open seas away from the beaches cresting around 2 feet. A moderate chop is expected on bays and inland waterways. AS A POWERFUL BOMB CYCLONE SLAMMED THE EAST COAST WITH SNOW AND WHIPPING WINDS? A CRUISE SHIP SAILED RIGHT INTO ITS PATH?

SOT -- Karoline Ross/Passenger

I just sat there holding my children? like I can't believe I brought my kids here and thinking? I don't think we're going to make it back.

THE NORWEGIAN BREAKAWAY CRUISE LEFT THE BAHAMAS TUESDAY WITH ABOUT 4,000 PEOPLE ON BOARD? BY WEDNESDAY THIS IS WHAT PASSENGERS WERE FACING -- HURRICANE FORCE WINDS AND HUGE WAVES ROCKING THE SHIP, ALL THAT WATER FLOODING IN? POURING DOWN THE STAIRCASE?

SOT - Anthony Romano

You never want to be on a cruise ship and water coming on the boat.

EVEN THE WATER FROM THE POOL? CHURNING? SPILLING OUT. TOWELS AT THE DOORS? A DOWNPOUR OUTSIDE. BLACK TAPE PUT ACROSS PICTURES HANGING ON THE WALL? HOLDING THEM IN PLACE? ANYTHING NOT HELD DOWN TOSSED AROUND. SOME GUESTS? NOT FEELING SAFE IN THEIR ROOMS? MOVING TO THE SHIP'S ATRIUM.

SOT -- Karoline Ross/Passenger

Terrified, they were all crying. People had life vests on.

SOT - Anthony Romano

I knew if we had to get those life jackets on and evacuate the ship? there was probably no way we were gonna make it.

FINALLY FRIDAY? HOURS LATE FOR ARRIVAL? THE SHIP MADE IT TO NEW YORK. BUT THIS MORNING? MANY OF THE PASSENGERS WANT ANSWERS.

SOT -- Karoline Ross/Passenger

I will never understand the fact that they made a choice to take over 4,000 people though a storm

NORWEGIAN APOLOGIZING TO GUESTS SAYING THE SHIP "encountered stronger than forecasted weather conditions. The safety of our guest and crew is always our top priority and the ship's Captain adjusted the ship's speed and itinerary accordingly to maintain the safest possible route, delaying the ship's arrival."
