Hotel Stays Extended Through Feb. 10 for Eligible Hurricane Irma Survivors

ORLANDO, Fla. – Eligible Hurricane Irma survivors receiving Transitional Sheltering Assistance may receive an extension to stay temporarily in hotels while they look for an alternative place to live.

FEMA’s TSA, which pays for short-term hotel stays, has extended eligibility from Jan. 7 to Feb. 10, 2018, with hotel checkout Feb. 11, 2018. Participants in TSA will receive a phone call telling them whether they are eligible for the extension and what they need to do to remain at their current hotel or find a new hotel. Applicants must meet certain requirements to remain eligible.

Hurricane Irma survivors who are not currently in TSA but who may be eligible are notified automatically. Participants must be registered with FEMA and be eligible for disaster assistance.

FEMA pays directly for the room and any applicable taxes. Applicants are responsible for all other incidental costs, such as meals, transportation, etc. Hotels may require a credit card for incidental expenses.

A household of four or fewer members is authorized one hotel room and a household of five or more is authorized additional rooms based on a limit of four people per room. One member of each household 18 or older must reside in each room.

TSA-eligible applicants must find and book their own hotel rooms. The list of participating hotels is on DisasterAssistance.gov, under the link Transitional Sheltering Assistance Program or by phoning the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362. For TTY, call 800-462-7585. For 711 or Video Relay Service , call 800-621-3362.

Applicants with disabilities or who have access and functional needs should check with hotels to ensure appropriate accommodations are available. Those with pets must check to see if pets are accepted. Applicants must show photo identification and adhere to any hotel check-in requirements.

Fenway South Farm & Flea Market begins January 8

Open Mondays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Jan. 8 to March 12, 2018

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The weekly farmer’s market at JetBlue Park at Fenway South, located at 11500 Fenway South Drive in Fort Myers, is set to return for a three-month run this January with a new time and an added flea market.

Beginning Jan. 8 and running until March 12, 2018, Fenway South Drive, in front of JetBlue Park, will host the Fenway South Farm & Flea Market every Monday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The market will include fresh local produce, cheeses, fresh pastas, seafood, baked breads, meats, herbs, ready-to-eat meals, plants, flowers, crafts, soaps, candles and more.

According to operator Betsy Ventura, who, along with Jean Baer, owns Local Roots, LLC and will run the market at JetBlue Park each Monday, anyone in the community is welcome to drop in for the day with their new or gently used items, antiques, etc. for $40 per week or $30 per week if they commit to the month. Spaces will be assigned upon arrival.

Parking is free on market days.

“The flea market aspect of our weekly event really sets this apart from other farmer’s markets,” said Ventura. “Our vendors are very excited to be returning to JetBlue Park to promote their locally produced products and wares to neighboring communities as well as to Boston Red Sox fans. ABC7 IS FINDING YOU WAYS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE FRIGID TEMPS AND SAVE SOME MONEY ON YOUR ENERGY BILLS.

IT STARTS WITH YOUR THERMOSTAT, WHERE L-C-E-C RECOMMENDS EVERYONE TURN THE DIAL DOWN TO 68 DEGREES.

THEY SAY IT'S THE MOST EFFICIENT SETTING FOR CONDITIONS LIKE THESE.

THE ENERGY COMPANY HAS SEEN MAJOR SPIKES IN ENERGY BILLS, BECAUSE HOMEOWNERS HAVE DONE THE OPPOSITE AND CRANKED UP THE HEAT.

AT LEAST 38 PERCENT OF HEAT IS LOST THROUGH CRACKS IN YOUR DOORS AND WINDOWS, THAT COULD ALL BE FIXED WITH SEALANT OR PLASTIC WINDOW TREATMENT.

WHEN IT'S WARM --

EXPERTS RECOMMEND YOU USE A POOL BLANKET TO TRAP THE HEAT --

AND KEEP YOUR WATER WARM ALL YEAR ROUND.

THAT DECISION COULD SAVE YOU A LOT OF TIME AND MONEY --

INSTEAD OF TRYING TO HEAT UP A COLD POOL.

POSSIBLE GET MORE FOR THE VOSOT VERSION OF THIS VOSOT.

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF HEATERS FOR POOLS. ONE IS A HEAT PUMP --

WHICH IS ELECTRIC.

THE OTHER IS PROPANE GAS.

HEAT PUMPS PULL HEAT FROM THE AIR --

HUMIDITY --

AND WATER AROUND IT TO KEEP THE POOL WATER WARN.

RIGHT NOW THERE'S NOT MUCH WARMTH IN ANY OF THOSE AREAS --

SO THE HEAT PUMP WILL EFFECTIVELY SHUT OFF OR ENTER DEFROST MODE.

PROPANE HEATERS ARE CONSIDERED RECOVERY HEATERS.

THAT BECAUSE NO MATTER HOW COLD YOU LET THE WATER GET --

ALMOST 21 MILLION PEOPLE WERE CONSIDERED BURDENED BY THE PRICE OF THEIR RENT IN 2016.

MEANING MORE THAN 30 PERCENT OF INCOME IS DEDICATED TO HOUSING AND UTILITIES.

SOME ARE IN EVEN WORSE SHAPE.

25 PERCENT OF RENTERS PAY MORE THAN HALF OF THEIR INCOME FOR HOUSING.

AN IMPROVING ECONOMY AND RISING PAYCHECKS HAVE HELPED EASE THE BURDEN FOR SOME RENTERS A LITTLE.

IT'S THE FOCUS OF POLITICAL PROMISES AND SLOGANS.

THE RENT IS JUST TOO HIGH.

ACCORDING TO A NEW STUDY -- MILLIONS OF AMERICANS CAN'T AFFORD THEIR RENT.

IN TODAY'S CONSUMER WATCH -- REID BINION HAS TIPS THAT MAY HELP LOWER YOUR BILLS.

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--

NEARLY HALF OF RENTERS CAN'T AFFORD THEIR RENT.

ACCORDING TO A HARVARD REPORT -- ALMOST 21 MILLION PEOPLE WERE CONSIDERED BURDENED BY THE PRICE OF THEIR RENT IN 2016.

MEANING MORE THAN 30 PERCENT OF INCOME IS DEDICATED TO HOUSING AND UTILITIES.

SOME ARE IN EVEN WORSE SHAPE.

25 PERCENT OF RENTERS PAY MORE THAN HALF OF THEIR INCOME FOR HOUSING.

LOSING SUCH A BIG CHUNK OF YOUR CHECK CAN IMPACT YOUR SAVINGS --

AND FORCE TOUGH SPENDING DECISIONS DOWN THE ROAD.

LIKE DECIDING WHETHER TO PAY RENT OR PAY FOR FOOD.

THERE IS SOME GOOD NEWS.

AN IMPROVING ECONOMY AND RISING PAYCHECKS HAVE HELPED EASE THE BURDEN FOR SOME RENTERS.

BUT -- AFFLUENT RENTERS -- COMBINED WITH HIGH BUILDING AND LAND COSTS -- ARE DRIVING THE PRICES UP.

YOU MAY BE ABLE TO LOWER PAYMENTS.

TRY TO SWITCH PROVIDERS EVERY YEAR.

CALL YOUR CABLE COMPANY TO SEE IF YOU CAN NEGOTIATE A LOWER RATE.

OR CUT THE CORD -- AND SWITCH TO A STREAMING SERVICE.

CONSIDER GETTING A ROOMMATE.

THE NEW PERSON COULD HELP YOU CUT COSTS IN HALF.

IF YOU ARE A GOOD RENTER -- HAGGLE WITH YOUR LANDLORD.

TRY TO TALK THE COMPANY OUT OF RAISING YOUR RENT WHEN IT COMES TIME TO RENEW.

IF AN APPLIANCE BREAKS -- ASK YOUR LANDLORD ABOUT GETTING CREDIT ON YOUR NEXT RENT STATEMENT.

ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE TO SPEND MONEY WHILE YOU WAIT FOR THAT APPLIANCE TO GET FIXED.

BOTTOM LINE -- IT DOESN'T HURT TO HAVE A CONVERSATION.

IT JUST MAY HELP KEEP YOUR COSTS DOWN.
