CODY ~ DAY PLANNER-WX CTR

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Finally a morning where we don't need to bundle up! If you have to be outdoors for a while this morning, you may want a jacket but it's rather comfortable this morning compared to last week. Temperatures will warm up from the mid 50s this morning to the upper 70s later this afternoon. Our high temperatures are finally back above average for this time of year. Cloud cover will increase as we head though the day with a chance for a few light showers tonight.

Our next weather-maker, an area of low pressure, will move into the Gulf as we head into tomorrow bringing more cloud cover and chance of rain to our area. Don't expect a washout on Tuesday but keep the umbrella handy. Dreary conditions are expected heading into mid-week as the low slowly stalls out and then moves out of the area. Even with the spotty showers and added cloud cover over the next few days, our high temperatures will still make it up into the mid to upper 70s.

This system will move out by Thursday before our next cold front moves in for the weekend. We won't see as much of a cold snap but expect temperatures to drop into the low 70s. Return to index of stories...

WHEN TEENAGERS ARE ALTHLETES --

THEY MAY DO ANYTHING TO MAKE SURE THEY WIN AGAINST THE COMPETITION.

BUT ONE MICHIGAN TEEN IS PROVING THAT THEORY WRONG TODAY.

THIS MORNING --

WE'RE INTRODUCING YOU TO ONE SWIMMER WHO TOOK OFF HIS COMPETITIVE FINS DURING A SWIM MEET --

TO SAVE HIS *RIVAL* COMPETITOR. Return to index of stories...

4AM: MI TEEN SAVES COMPETITIOR-PKG

CORUNNA VARSITY SWIMMER XAVIER STAUBS HAD JUST FINISHED A MEDLEY RELAY WHEN IN THE MIDST OF CHEERS AND THE COMMOTION OF PEOPLE GETTING IN AND OUT OF THE POOL, HE NOTICED PEOPLE TRYING TO GET HIS ATTENTION.

Xavier Staubs/Swimmer:

"I look over in the stands and my best friend's dads were pointing down and screaming at me to look down, and I looked down and I see this kid just completely limp."

XAVIER JUMPED BACK IN THE WATER TO GET OWOSSO SWIMMER KAMRIN SAMSON, WHO WAS UNCONSCIOUS AND NEAR THE BOTTOM.

Xavier Staubs/Swimmer:

"My eyes were burning as I was doing this. I clawed to the bottom of the pool, lifted him up with one arm, pushed him to the surface and raised him to the surface with one arm."

ANOTHER CORUNNA SWIMMER WHO IS A CERTIFIED LIFEGUARD ALSO HELPED XAVIER.

THEN KAMRIN'S COACH MIKE GUTE AND ANOTHER MAN PULLED HIM OUT OF THE WATER.

Mike Gute/Coach:

"Kamrin had the right people there at the time to take care of him. I'm a retired police officer, firefighter. The gentleman that helped me is a retired firefighter and EMT. My wife was in the stands. She's a pediatric intensive care nurse. There was also another nurse on scene."

Voice of Cory Samson/Kamrin's Mother:

"Mostly, just grateful. It was a scary situation. My husband and I were up in the stands, but we didn't have a full visual on him because we were further down in the stands and not right in front of him. I mean, they were quick on their response, quick getting him out."

KAMRIN'S MOM SAYS IT'S HIS FIRST SEASON ON THE TEAM AND THAT WAS HIS FIRST MEET.

AFTER CONSULTING WITH MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS, SHE BELIEVES THAT HE MAY HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH BREATHING.

KAMRIN IS HOME AFTER BEING TREATED IN THE HOSPITAL BUT HE IS STILL RECOVERING AND PLANNING TO SWIM AGAIN.

Xavier Staubs/Swimmer:

"I didn't care if it was a rivalry or anything. I just saw someone needed help and I instantly thought I got to save this guy."

Mike Gute/Coach:

"There's always this competition no matter what sport it is, but really our communities are three to four miles apart, and even though there's that rivalry, there's a friendship. And even though -- you know -- no matter what the outcome was of any event that we have, when people need help, good people step forward and that's what life is all about." THE STICKER SHOCK IS GETTING REAL FOR THE SUGARY DRINK TAX IN SEATTLE.

STORES AND RESTAURANTS ACROSS THE CITY HAVE GRAPPLED WITH HOW TO HANDLE THE NEW TAX THAT WENT INTO EFFECT LAST MONDAY.

IT'S ALREADY RAISING EYEBROWS AND TEMPERS.

BUT --

AS JON HUMBERT EXPLAINS --

IT GOES FAR BEYOND THE GROCERY STORE. Return to index of stories...

4AM: SEATTLE SUGARY DRINK TAX-PKG

SOMETIMES SEEING IT IN BLACK AND WHITE MAKES YOU TURN RED.

"Yeah. We pass on that.that is ridiculous."

--nats--

MEGA CHAIN COSTCO IS MAKING ITS OPINION CLEAR ABOUT THE TAX.

UPFRONT ABOUT THE EXTRA COST, AND TELLING SHOPPERS WHERE THEY CAN BUY *OUTSIDE* THE CITY.

--nats--

BUT WHAT IF YOU WANT TO JUST SIT DOWN AT A BAR, OR AT A SEATTLE ICON?

--nats--

FAST-CASUAL PLACES LIKE IVAR'S AND CHAINS LIKE SUBWAY FACE A UNIQUE PROBLEM.

FOUNTAIN DRINKS ARE USUALLY JUST ONE PRICE AND ONE CHARGE.

--nats--

PRETTY MUCH JUST PAYING FOR THE CUP.

A MAJOR FRANCHISER FOR SUBWAY TOLD US TONIGHT THAT HE'S JUST GOING TO PASS THE COST TO CUSTOMERS FOR *ALL* DRINKS, DIET AND SUGARY ALIKE.

IVAR'S IS STILL ON THE FENCE: "WE STILL HAVE SODA WE PURCHASED IN DECEMBER, SO WE HAVE SOME TIME BEFORE WE HAVE TO CHANGE PRICES FOR SODA. MORE OF OUR CUSTOMERS ARE CHOOSING AS THEIR DRINKS MILK, MILK SHAKES, TEAS, AND WATERS, SO THE IMPACT OF THE TAX IS DIMINISHING EVERY DAY."

THAT'S PART OF THE POINT, SAY TAX SUPPORTERS.

THINK OF IT LIKE THE TOBACCO TAXES.

--nats--

IT'S MEANT TO BE SO PAINFUL IN THE WALLET, THAT IT LEADS PEOPLE CHANGE THEIR HABITS.

--nats--

Teresa Mosqueda: "It changed norms. It saved lives."

COUNCILWOMAN TERESA MOSQUEDA HAS PUSHED FOR PROGRAMS LIKE THIS FOR NEARLY A DECADE.

SHE AND OTHERS SAY THE SUGAR DRINK INDUSTRY TARGETS DISADVANTAGED COMMUNITIES MOST AFFECTED BY DIABETES AND OBESITY.

--nats--

THE TAX MONEY IS ONLY PARTIALLY ABOUT HABITS.

Teresa Mosqueda: "To make sure that we not only impact norms and behaviors for folks in term of choice and consumption. But that we also invest in food access programs, education and early-learning efforts throughout Seattle."

AND BACK AT COSTCO THOSE SIGNS WILL KEEP GETTING ATTENTION.

BUT THE COMPANY SAYS THE PRICE WON'T GO UP AT ITS FAMOUSLY CHEAP CONCESSION STAND.

--nats--

COSTCO WILL ABSORB THE COST, KEEPING YOUR COST FOR A HOT DOG AND SODA AT A BUCK-FIFTY. BECAUSE SOME THINGS *ARE* WORTH PAYING FOR. Return to index of stories...

MISS AMERICA IS RAISING THE MAXIMUM AGE OF CONTESTANTS.

YOU CAN NOW BE 25 YEARS OLD TO COMPETE.

IT'S THE FIRST CHANGE TO PAGEANT RULES SINCE FORMER FOX NEWS CHANNEL ANCHOR AND 1989 MISS AMERICA GRETCHEN CARLSON BECAME CHAIRWOMAN OF THE ORGANIZATION'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS.

THE NEW RULE IS MEANT TO ALLOW MORE YOUNG WOMEN PURSUING ADVANCED DEGREES TO BENEFIT FROM THE PROGRAM.

MISS AMERICA RAISES MAXIMUM AGE OF COMPETITORS TO 25

The Miss America organization is raising the maximum age of contestants from 24 to 25.

A spokeswoman told The Press of Atlantic City that the change takes effect with this year's contests. It's the first change to pageant rules since former Fox News Channel anchor and 1989 Miss America Gretchen Carlson became chairwoman of the organization's board of directors.

Spokeswoman Chelsea Mineur said Miss America officials drafted the new rule. It's meant to allow more young women pursuing advanced degrees to benefit from the program.

Carlson was named chairwoman on New Year's Day. That came less than two weeks after leaked emails surfaced showing CEO Sam Haskell and others disparaging the appearance and intellect of former Miss Americas.

Haskell resigned Dec. 23. Most of the previous board members also have resigned.
