FIRST WEATHER-WX CTR

You'll want the umbrella before you leave the house this morning as we track a few spotty showers through the day. Otherwise it's feeling pretty muggy and warm to start off our Tuesday with temperatures in the low 60s. These muggy conditions could bring a few areas of fog before sunrise. An area of low pressure has moved into the Gulf creating some dreary conditions for our Tuesday. Even with the added cloud cover, we will still make it up into the mid to upper 70s today.

Patchy fog is possible through the area tomorrow as we continue to stay warm and muggy through mid-week. A few lingering showers tomorrow but we will start to see more sunshine as that area of low pressure starts to move out. Highs in the upper 70s.

Rain conditions start to deteriorate by the end of the week as our high temperatures jump up into the upper 70s and 80s. This is just in time for our next cold front to bring cooler temperatures for the weekend. Return to index of stories...

TODAY--

GOVERNOR RICK SCOTT WILL GIVE HIS ANNUAL STATE OF THE STATE ADDRESS.

IN IT--

HE'LL BE TALKING ABOUT TAXES--

HURRICANE IRMA--

AND JOB CREATION HERE IN FLORIDA.

HE'S ALSO ASKING THE LEGISLATURE TO APPROVE HIS BUDGET PROPOSAL.

THAT 87 BILLION DOLLAR BUDGET IS 18 BILLION DOLLARS HIGHER THAN HIS FIRST BUDGET, BACK IN 2011.

BUT THAT'S MOSTLY DUE TO AN IMPROVED ECONOMY.

HE'S ALSO SEEKING THE FEWEST TAX CUTS OF HIS SEVEN YEARS AS GOVERNOR.

BUT HE LIKELY WON'T GET EVERYONE HE WANTS--

PARTLY BECAUSE OF THE AMOUNT OF DAMAGE THE STATE HAS TO DEAL WITH--

AFTER HURRICANE IRMA.

THE STATE OF THE STATE IS PLANNED FOR TODAY AT 11 AM. Return to index of stories...

FL LEGISLATIVE SESSION-OC-VO

TODAY IS ALSO THE START OF THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION HERE IN FLORIDA.

AND HIGH ON THE AGENDA--

IS SOLVING THE OPOID CRISIS.

IN 2017 AN AVERAGE OF 16 FLORIDIAN'S DIED WITH OPIOIDS IN THEIR SYSTEM EACH DAY. THE YEAR BEFORE IT WAS JUST 10.

TO HELP TACKLE THE ISSUE, SENATOR LIZBETH BENACQUISTO IS SPONSORING LEGISLATION THAT WOULD RESTRICT HOW MANY OPIOIDS A DOCTOR COULD PRESCRIBE.

SINGLE PRESCRIPTIONS WOULD BE LIMITED TO 3 DAYS.

THE BILL ALSO REQUIRES DOCTORS TO GO THROUGH TRAINING EVERY OTHER YEAR FOR BEST PRACTICES IN ORDER TO CONTINUE PRESCRIBING OPIOIDS.

IF PASSED FLORIDA WOULD BE THE SECOND STATE TO RESTRICT PRESCRIPTIONS TO 3 DAYS. THE ONLY OTHER STATE WITH SUCH RESTRICTIONS IS KENTUCKY. Return to index of stories...

NURSING HOME MONEY-OCVO

ALSO ON THE AGENDA FOR THIS YEAR--

FLORIDA NURSING HOMES.

THEY ARE ASKING THE LEGISLATURE FOR FIFTY MILLION DOLLARS IN THIS YEARS BUDGET.

THEY WOULD USE THE CASH TO HELP IMPROVE STAFFING, QUALITY OF CARE AND HELP PAY FOR THE INSTALLATION OF GENERATORS, WHICH THEY SAY CAN COST UP TO THREE HUNDRED FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR LARGER FACILITIES.

THE HOMES SUCCESSFULLY CHALLENGED AN EMERGENCY RULE REQUIRING THE GENERATORS AFTER HURRICANE IRMA RELATED DEATHS IN SOUTH FLORIDA.

FORECAST OPEN-CLIP

Return to index of stories...

CODY ~ WEATHER-WX CTR

It's going to be a wet and cloudy start to the day for parts of Southwest Florida, so you'll want the umbrella as you're heading out this morning.

A low spinning in the Gulf will bring in some areas of light to moderate rain today, which will move from south to north this morning, and some of this rain will linger through the afternoon and evening.

Rain amounts will generally stay below a quarter inch, and the chance for thunderstorms will be relatively low.

Clouds will be plentiful again today, but some of us should manage to see some sun mixing in with the clouds this afternoon.

Even with some rain and clouds in our forecast today, temperatures will warm into the upper 70s, and some places may get up to 80 degrees depending on how much sunshine breaks through later today.

Wednesday and Thursday will start on the cloudy side with some areas of fog also forming early in the day, but sunshine will become more prevalent by the afternoon.

Daytime highs both days will reach the lowers 80s , and overnight lows will only cool into the mid 60s.

Another strong cold front will sweep through Southwest Florida late Friday into Saturday morning.

The front will be gone by Saturday, leaving us with sunny but chilly weather this weekend.

Afternoon highs this weekend will struggle to get out of the 60s, and there's a good chance temperatures will fall into the upper 40s by Sunday morning.

A few areas of scattered rain will also be possible Friday as the front makes its way through the area, but rain chances will only be around 30%. Return to index of stories...

SPIDER ALMOST KILLS MAN-OC-VO

--LEAD IN--

A NEBRASKA MAN IS SPEAKING OUT ABOUT THE SPIDER BITE THAT NEARLY KILLED HIM.

WAVERLE MONROE REPORTS.

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--

Kelly Leisure:

"This is the closet where he apparently came from."

KELLY LEISURE NEVER THOUGHT SOMETHING IN HIS CLOSET COULD SEND HIM TO THE HOSPITAL.

Kelly Leisure:

"He got me through my hoodie."

A BITE WITH A LETHAL DOSE.

Kelly Leisure:

"Low and behold I was feeling sick when I got home."

A BROWN RECLUSE SPIDER KEPT LEISURE IN BED FOR FIVE DAYS -- THE BITE NEARLY KILLING HIM.

Kelly Leisure:

"If I would have been in that room for another 24 hours, I would have been gone."

LEISURE WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL-- AND DOCTORS RUSHED HIM INTO SURGERY.

Kelly Leisure:

"Wait until you see it. You actually have to see it to believe it."

LEISURE SHOWED US THE GIANT BANDAGE ON HIS BACK.

WE'D SHOW YOU THE WOUND, BUT IT'S TRULY HORRIFIC.

THE BITE ORIGINALLY LOOKED LIKE THIS.

DAYS AFTER SURGERY--THE OPEN WOUND-- IS AT LEAST SIX INCHES LONG.

LEISURE STILL HAS TO HAVE FLUIDS PUMPED OUT HIS BACK, AND THE DRESSING CHANGED EVERY OTHER DAY.

Carl Braun:

"They are more common in this area than some people think."

CARL BRAUN IS AN EXTERMINATOR.

Carl Braun:

"All spiders have venom, the particular venom in the brown recluse spider causes tissue necrosis."

MEANING THE VENOM KILLS BODY TISSUE.

Jonathan Larson:

"This isn't Arachnaphobia or Eight Legged Freaks."

SPIDER EXPERT JONATHAN LARSON SAYS THE SPIDERS ARE NOT AGGRESSIVE.

Jonathan Larson:

"They're not looking for human blood or anything like that. They are just something that we accidentally interact with."

AND THE SPIDERS BY NATURE LIKE TO HIDE.

Jonathan Larson:

"As long as they can find food and feel sheltered in that spot then they'll wait out a whole winter or sometime like that."

Carl Braun:

"We might find them in our houses in the back of closets, in boots or gloves, maybe in an old sweater or a box."

BECAUSE OF ITS UNIFORM LOOK, THE SPIDERS CAN BE EASILY MISTAKEN.

Waverle Monroe:

"Experts say a brown recluse spider size is anywhere from a dime to a quarter but if it's bigger than a quarter then it is probably not a brown recluse."

Jonathan Larson:

"If you see one it is a good bet that there are probably a few others around."

AND THAT'S WHY YOU NEED TO TREAT THE BROWN RECLUSE SERIOUSLY.

DON'T BE SHY ABOUT SEEKING HELP, RIGHT AWAY.

KELLY LEISURE LEARNED THE HARD WAY.

Kelly Leisure:

"It took me from a really healthy person, I've never been hardly sick a day in my life. From here on out, I'm scared to do anything."
