CODY ~ DAY PLANNER-WX CTR

Forecast: Evening showers before a cool weekend

Weather this morning in Southwest Florida won't be that much different from the past few days. You'll head out the door to mild temperatures in the 60s with some areas of fog. A light breeze this morning should limit fog a bit more than the past couple of days.

The cold front we've been talking about for the past few days will arrive this evening after temperatures climb back to around 80 degrees in the early afternoon. Skies will be partly cloudy around lunchtime and progress to mostly cloudy by sunset. Expect late afternoon and early evening showers as the front passes over us.

The chillier air will take some time to filter in across our area so tonight will only see lows in the upper 50s and low 60s under cloudy skies. Clouds clear out on Saturday and we'll spend most of the day in the 60s. Windy weather is expected all weekend as the chillier air rushes in.

Temperatures will bottom out in the low to mid 40s Saturday night with a few inland locations briefly seeing the upper 30s. Highs will remain in the 60s on Sunday.

We'll warm up a few degrees on Monday and Tuesday and could even see some areas reach the low 70s but this warming trend will not last long. Another front is set to arrive in the middle of next week that will send temperatures back down to well below average. Pretty much all of this weekend and next week will be below our mid-January averages for temperatures. Return to index of stories...

MONTECITO RESIDENT CURT PICKERING LOST TWO FRIENDS.

Curt Pickering/Montecito Resident

"Josie Gower is one and Rebecca Riskin and their bodies were found down, you know, down at the 101 from Glen Oaks 192, so that's almost two miles. So it's real sad, more so when you know these people."

THE AREAS WHERE THE VICTIMS WERE FOUND REMAIN UNDER MANDATORY EVACUATION.

ON THURSDAY THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE SAID 48 PEOPLE WERE MISSING BUT LATER REVISED THAT NUMBER TO EIGHT -- BUT SAY AS MANY AS 43 COULD STILL BE UNACCOUNTED FOR.

THESE DEADLY MUDSLIDES CAME AFTER THE THOMAS FIRE -- THE LARGEST IN STATE HISTORY.

HEAVY RAINS TRIGGERED MUDSLIDES IN SCORCHED AREAS, STRIPPED OF VEGETATION.

THE TORRENTIAL RAINS WERE FELT ACROSS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA -- EVEN IN BURBANK WHERE A MUDFLOW PUSHED THIS CAR DOWN A STREET.

BUT SOME CALIFORNIANS FEAR THERE COULD BE MORE STORMS LIKE THIS IN THE FUTURE.

CODY ~ FUTURE & 7 DAY-WX CTR TO WX WALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

RESCUE TEAMS AND CADAVER DOGS DIG THROUGH KNEE-DEEP MUD LOOKING FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T BEEN SEEN IN DAYS.

AUTHORITIES CONFIRM AT LEAST 17-PEOPLE WERE KILLED BY THE STORM.

"Jonathan Benitez, 10 years old. Caylee Benitez, 3 years old. Martin Cabrera Munoz, 48 years old."

THE TWO PEOPLE INSIDE WERE ABLE TO EVENTUALLY GAIN CONTROL OF THE CAR AND ESCAPED WITHOUT INJURY.

BUT SOME CALIFORNIANS FEAR THERE COULD BE MORE STORMS LIKE THIS IN THE FUTURE.

Cecil Kyte/California Resident

"Could it be 3, 4 more? If you look at the hills up here, everything's exposed and I would ask people to prepare themselves for a winter of similar proportions if we continue to get rain like this."

Voice of J.T. ALPAUGH:

"YOU SEE THIS AREA WHERE THIS HOME AND THIS POOL AS WE FADE BACK TO WHAT'S LEFT THERE NOW, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING."

CODY ~ TOWER CAMS-WX WALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

HOUSE HUNTING-VO IN KEY

TAX REFORM HAS CHANGED THINGS FOR HOUSE HUNTERS IN SOME PARTS OF THE U-S.

SO, IF YOU'RE THINKING OF BUYING THIS YEAR, KEEP A FEW THINGS IN MIND.

ONE OF THE BIGGEST CHANGES IS TO THE DEDUCTION YOU CAN TAKE ON YOUR PROPERTY TAXES.

THE NEW TAX LAWS LIMIT YOUR DEDUCTION TO $10,000 FOR YOUR STATE AND LOCAL TAXES.

ANOTHER BIG CHANGE IS TO THE MORTGAGE INTEREST DEDUCTION.

IF YOU'RE IN THE MARKET FOR A FAIRLY MODEST HOUSE, YOU CAN STILL DEDUCT THAT MORTGAGE INTEREST IN FULL.

TAX REFORM HAS CHANGED THINGS FOR HOUSE HUNTERS IN SOME PARTS OF THE U-S.

SO, IF YOU'RE THINKING OF BUYING THIS YEAR, KEEP A FEW THINGS IN MIND.

THE TIPS -- BY THE WAY -- COME COURTESY OF THE FINANCIAL WEBSITE THE MOTLEY FOOL.

ONE OF THE BIGGEST CHANGES IS TO THE DEDUCTION YOU CAN TAKE ON YOUR PROPERTY TAXES.

THE NEW TAX LAWS LIMIT YOUR DEDUCTION TO $10,000 FOR YOUR STATE AND LOCAL TAXES.

IT HAD BEEN UNLIMITED.

ANOTHER BIG CHANGE IS TO THE MORTGAGE INTEREST DEDUCTION.

IF YOU'RE IN THE MARKET FOR A FAIRLY MODEST HOUSE, YOU CAN STILL DEDUCT THAT MORTGAGE INTEREST IN FULL.

BUT IF YOU'RE PLANNING ON PURCHASING A PRICIER HOME YOU'LL NEED TO KNOW THAT THE NEW LIMIT ON THE DEDUCTION HAS BEEN LOWERED TO LOANS FOR $750,000.

IT HAD BEEN FOR LOANS OF UP TO $1 MILLION.

AND A GOOD THING FOR HOUSE HUNTERS TO REMEMBER IS THE RULE OF THUMB ON HOUSING COSTS.

OVERALL HOUSING COSTS SHOULD NOT EXCEED 30% OF YOUR TAKE HOME PAY.

AND THOSE HOUSING COSTS NOT ONLY INCLUDE YOUR MORTGAGE PAYMENT, BUT INSURANCE, TAXES AND MAINTENANCE.
